Nissan-Ashok Leyland to launch Evalia by 2012-end

The joint venture of Japanese car maker Nissan and Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland will be rolling out its multi-purpose vehicle Evalia in the second half of 2012, Nissan’s executive vice-president Andy Palmer has said.

The vehicle is expected to be priced at Rs 8-10 lakh and will compete with the Toyota Innova.

The companies will also be investing Rs 4,000 crore in a plant in Pillaipakkam in Tamil Nadu for manufacturing light and heavy commercial vehicles, Palmer added.

The Evalia, which made its debut at the Auto Expo in January, will sport the Nissan badge, while a low-end variant, the Stile, which was also showcased at the auto expo, will carry the Ashok Leyland logo.

The plan to set up the Tamil Nadu plant had been announced in 2008, but the companied did not proceed with the investment due to unfavourable market conditions, Palmer said.

Construction will begin soon as the land has been allocated,” said Palmer. “Both companies will invest equally in the new facility as it is a 50-50 joint venture.”

The companies had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government for acquiring 380 acres of land for the project.

The two companies had entered into a joint venture in 2007.

AshokLeyland to help Datsun develop low cost cars

Yet another IAB scoop comes to limelight. Back in March 2012, when everyone was gung-ho about the resurgence of the Datsun brand, we brought you a scintillating scoop that Nissan was going to partner with Ashok Leyland for engineering low cost Datsun cars in India.

We were predicting that Nissan would announce this partnership on the day of launch in Mumbai. However, there was no word of Ashok Leyland at the Datsun revival press conference in Mumbai.
However recently Financial Chronicle carried a report that Nissan has roped in Ashok Leyland’s associate company Defiance Technologies for the design and development of the Datsun range of cars for the Indian market. Listen in to what a Nissan top official had to comment.
Andy Palmer, executive VP at Nissan Motor, Japan -
We are working with Ashok Ley*land’s engi*nee*ring services firm — Defiance. It’s a contract, not a collaboration.
Our speculation was that Nissan would partner with Ashok Leyland for the development but it seems that the relationship is strictly contractual.
The key aspect of Datsun is local engineering for local markets. In such a scenario, Defiance, which has comprehensive expertise in the Indian customer’s psyche, would work closely with Nissan’s R&D team in the project.
It has to be noted that Nissan wants Datsun cars to be developed by Indian engineers, suppliers and manufacturer to suit the Indian taste.
The low cost car developed by Defiance would not be a global car but would be tailored for the Indian audience at the same time meeting Nissan global standards for safety and quality.
The first car that would wear the Datun badge would be a Maruti Suzuki Alto rival. Datsun customers would be a first time buyer or someone looking forward to upgrade from a motorcycle or a Tata Nano.
Two Datsun cars (codenamed K2 and i2) are expected to be revealed at the 2014 Auto Expo in New Delhi. They will be on sale by mid-2014.

If Datsun clicks, we need not have to look up to Maruti for potential Chennai investment, besides Hyundai will also kick it up a notch, not to be left behind. Datsun could be crucial not only to Nissan, but also Chennai.

Ford Opens Global Sales Strategy Office at Ford Business Services Center in Chennai

http://www.at.ford.com/news/cn/Pages...n%20India.aspx

Paul Flanagan, manager, Global Sales, was in Chennai recently to inaugurate the Global Sales Strategy office, a recent addition to the Ford Business Services Center (part of Ford’s Global Business Services). This global team focuses on demand planning volumes, production programs, and acts as a conduit between the various Business Units (BUs) for the Global Marketing and Sales organisation.

“This group is crucial to delivering the growth strategies around the world and builds on the excellent work that is already being done by the Business Units. We will go further to provide greater transparency to global issues, a more detailed analytical breakdown of global demand trends, and enhance coordination and synergy across the Business Units. As the organisation grows, we aim to be a center of excellence for demand planning and analytics in the Marketing and Sales function, and a role model for working on a global basis,” said Flanagan.

Joginder Singh, executive director, Global Business Services, joined Flanagan to cut the ribbon and officially inaugurate the Global Sales Strategy office. The team presented the duo with perfumed garlands made from dried sandalwood flowers and a turban (ethnic Indian headgear). Keeping with Indian tradition, the leadership team was invited to light the lamp.

During the occasion, Singh said that, “at Global Business Services, we are committed to enhancing value for Ford Motor Company. As part of this strategy, we are leveraging the great talent we have in India to perform more knowledge-based services for our Business Units and Skill Teams out of our center in India. This team and the work that it will perform is a great proof point of this strategy in action.”

Aditya Mavillapalli, manager, Medium Term Demand Risk, concluded that, “We have leveraged the enormous talent pool and the highly skilled workforce that is available in India, and we are more than delighted with the team at Ford Business Services Center. With team members working in the US, UK and India on behalf of all Business Units, this team is an embodiment One Team and One Ford.”

No, they are more expensive than Audi & BMW. The XF competes with the likes of Audi A6, 5 series and E class Benz, while XJ competes with 7 series, A8 and S class Benz. The Germans are comparatively cheaper when it comes to basic models, if you go for higher end variants prices will be similar.

Harley- Will Chennai get the plant?

Read in today's ET that Harley want to start full fledged production of Harley bikes in India to bring down the cost by increasing localisation. Their current plant in Haryana is just a assembly plant. They are going to send a team to identify a location in India suitable for the greenfield plant. Wish Chennai gets this

There is a chance they might have it in Chennai too because of their existing peer(or even competitor) - Royal Enfield's presence.
