There's some great old archive films on the BBC Four London Collection http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/collect...00synd3/london

There's a poignant programme by John Betjeman and the Margaret Drabble film I Love This Dirty Town is really interesting. I love her comments late on about planners and councillors, though much of it obviously fell on deaf ears. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...is_Dirty_Town/

I can't believe this happened as late as 2006. It seems those who don't understand the urban experience are still the ones making the decisions.

Tonight's episode was about the changes in the streets around Deptford High Street - an area I grew up knowing. Like much of South London, the area may not have had the historical or architectural significance of other parts of the city, but the awful 60's/70's estates that replaced the old streets were inferior in so many ways and destroyed whole established communities.

Every planner, politician and architect should be made to sit down and watch it.
Yep, the planners had a real go at breaking the spirit of the working class. The architecture they built was so dehumanising that many of the residents suffered nervous breakdowns. Shows the profound psychological effects architecture can have on the human mind.

Its not that bad, Looks alright today
Greetings my English (Brittish) forum members!

To begin with, I have to say that I am not brittish or english but have generally respect towards all great European nations like your own English nation, but also of the Germans, French, Greek, Italian, Spanish and so on.

Reading this thread make you really sad actually. To see a great English nation and a great city like London being destroyed in this way. Everything about this city seems to be destroyed, and looking at the panoramas from the air, looking above the Themsen river confirms how much the city have changed.

The picture I quote illustrate perhaps best my point. Shame.

The same thing have been done to all major English and German cities, including Berlin. We have very few real European cities left in Europe, like Paris, Prague or Rome for example.

My question to you is how do you feel knowing all of this? Your city wasnt annihilated during WWII like Dresden or Cologne were, but because of your idiot politicians your city is ruined for ever. Looking at the picture I quoted above, seeing the amazing street with amazing architecture, a symbol of the great city London used to be, and now all of this is destroyed.

As mentioned before, you are not alone in doing this, the Germans have done it aswell but still it is very sad.

Interesting before and after on Holborn Viaduct, c/o The Champ:

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...1502036&page=3

The old Atlantic House was interesting at this level, but overbearing on Farringdon Road. The replacement is a mess, unredeemed by recreating a faux-Victorian stairway block.

What striked me about that photo of Queen Victoria is how cramped in everything looks. Back in the old photo there is just as much traffic but nothing feels 'hemmed in'. The canopies on the shopfront soften the transition to pavement well too.

Why don't we do the canopies anymore? They were brilliant! They provide shelter from the rain and shade from the sun. Simple.

Canopies are still fairly widely used in appropriate locations with wide enough pavements, usually to provide shades for outside seatings or stalls, for which businesses have to pay the council. I don't think canopies are/were ever used on their own.

It's also worth baring in mind that the perspective of the two images are different and Google Street View often gives a less-than-flattering portrayal.

Whoever had the idea of taking down those 8 historic buildings in Piccadilly offends reason! So much beautiful architecture has been lost to quite frankly idiotic developers!

Very interesting pictures by the way.

The image on the left shows Westminster Hospital behind the column in front of Westminster Abbey (Crimean War Memorial). A bit of the Sessions House can also be seen on the right.

The hospital was completed and opened in 1834. It remained in use till 1939 and was pulled down in 1950. It is now the site of the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre.

The Sessions House (Westminster Guildhall) was an octagonal building with a Doric portico, constructed by Samuel Pepys Cockerell in 1805.

Some great photo's there - really showing how St Pauls towered majestically over the city.

Until recently there was still a great view of St Pauls from the Rotherhithe & Bermondsey river-front, though I notice this has nearly gone now too.
