PHL to hold pre-bid conference for airport projects June 22

Quote:
The pre-bidding conference for the construction, rehabilitation and expansion of seven airports next month is a welcome step toward government’s campaign to enhance Philippine tourism through infrastructure development, Malacaņang said Friday.

Open to all parties, the conference will be held next Friday, June 22, at the DOTC Conference Room, 16th Floor, The Columbia Tower, Mandaluyong City, according to a statement by the Department of Transportation and Communications.

Included in the package are the Butuan Airport in Agusan del Sur, Cotabato City Airport in Maguindanao, Dipolog Airport in Zamboanga del Norte, Pagadian Airport in Zamboanga del Sur, Sanga-Sanga Airport in Tawi-Tawi, Maasin Airport in Southern Leyte, and San Vicente Airport in Palawan.

Documents released by the DOTC spelled out partial details of each project:

Butuan City’s P45.5-million airport development entails expanding the apron or docking bay and car park, constructing a drainage system and a concrete hollow-block fence.

The P58.1-million Cotabato airport development calls for widening its runway and taxiway. It supports the program to make North Cotabato a strategic link to the major “Arterial Road System” which connects the province to the Davao City-SOCCSKSARGEN-Cotabato corridor. The road system also connects the Cotabato via Kabacan-Maramag-Kibawe, Bukidnon Sayre Highway linking the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan City corridor.

The P55.2-million Dipolog airport development covers labor, materials, and equipment supply to complete the passenger terminal building. Dipolog is the one of the busiest air terminals in Mindanao.

The P42-million Pagadian Airport project seeks to improve its facilities to accommodate both commercial and private aircraft. The project will also extend the runway, widen the taxiway, rehabilitate and improve the passenger terminal building, improve and expand the car park area, and build a drainage system and a perimeter fence.

Tawi-Tawi’s P63.9-million Sanga-Sanga airport project in Bongao needs to have a new terminal building, expand its apron, and build a drainage system.

The airport in Maasin, Leyte, needs major improvements accommodate commercial flights. Part of the project to support local government initiatives on tourism initiatives is to extend the runway and clear a hill obstructing air traffic.

The P62.7-million San Vicente Airport development requires a passenger terminal, fire station building, and an elevated 2,500-gallon water tank. Its runway also needs to be extended with a slope protection, and a hill obstruction removed.

FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE WORLD; Trains to run on rubber tires

Quote:
Road trains will be rolled out on the streets of Metro Manila this year.

“On the streets, without rail tracks,” said Science Secretary Mario G. Montejo , adding it could be the first train of its kind in the world that will run on rubber tires and not on tracks.

“It will be like bringing down the LRT or MRT to the street level,” he said, referring to the Light Rail Transit and the Mass Rail Transit systems now operating in Metro Manila.

The road trains will be powered by diesel engines, and not on electric power as now used in the LRT and MRT. They will be similar to buses except that it will be composed of several coaches like trains, he said.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) “will deploy prototype trains this year,” Montejo said, explaining they will not run on steel wheels but on rubber tires similar to those in buses and will travel on ordinary roads and not on tracks.

It will move like the LRT or MRT with each coach moving on its own motor. “I would assume it will be the first in the world,” Montejo said.

Costing about the same as a brand new bus, each coach with a capacity of 60 to 70 passengers will have its own generator and battery. It will travel only on a single lane so as not to add to traffic congestion. And it will be deployed first in major highways that don’t have bus services like on C-5.

Whenever it stops or breaks, the road train will generate electricity. It will have a mechanism to change traffic lights to green whenever it passes intersections.

Montejo said the road train will be funded by the DOST’s budget of P50 million for the first year of R&D on mass transit that includes monorails and conventional trains.

The DOST will develop, study and show that the road train works, Montejo said. “It will be up to the private sector to take up the technology,” he added. “The DOST’s role is on research and development.”

"Right now the bidding process is already underway, planned for late May is over. Once completed immediately built," said Director of Integrated Services One Pintui (PTSP) and Public Relations Agency for Concession (BP) Batam, Dwi Djoko Wiwoho.

He said that in 2012 the new development into the early stages of the development plan of the Port of Batuampar for three years with the state budget amounting to Rp366 billion.

In the first year, he said, the original budget ceiling of capital or Rp 63,7 billion, but BP Batam is filing a supplementary budget for the deepening of the groove and the erection of sea that has yet to be agreed.

Meanwhile, in the second year will cost the district about Rp200 billion, Rp102 billion and the third year.

According to him, the expansion is done so that the port is still fit for use as a supporter of the status of Batam as a free trade zone.

Data is based on BP Batam, the current length of the pier port Batuampar reaches 1250 meters of the planned 3,600 meters.

Djoko explained, the depth at the dock is 6 -12 LWS (lower sea water/from the sea) meters of a planned 14-meter LWS.

Port of loading and unloading capacity of only 230 thousand Batuampar TEUS (twenty feet equivalent units / twenty-foot equivalent units) per year from 1.5 million TEUs planned new, while the capacity of the boat dock by 35 thousand tons.

wow, didn't know Jakarta uses those kind of buses. I only see these kind of buses in developed countries. They are called "articulated bus"

anyway, on the Philippine's plan.. I'm thinking it will similarly look like that. How many coaches? we are not really sure. he mentioned "several coaches" - "with each coach having it's own motor", so it makes me believe for it to have at least more than 2 coaches..
IMO, it's better if they make double decker articulated buses, rather than making it too long. saves space and will easier for the driver to stir. Some countries already have this type (articulated double decker 2 coach bus).

The design wasn't shown in public yet.. nor plans are not clear if it will be implemented. It will depend solely if the government or private investors will invest on it.

This is a very welcome development. I really hope it pushes through. If it becomes successful, other countries can follow.
