The president of Russian Railways (ржд) has been quoted saying that the company is ready to undertake the project and will bid for it after an invitation by the Speaker Marende. The RR has built a similar project for the Moscow region province and the airports.
He also said that they may also modernize the Mombasa railway if asked to as they have just finished modernizing and electrifying the longest railway system in the world. The RR was were built in the 1860s and soviet days.
The lamu project railway also is in their plans.
They are now building the railway for abu dhabi at $2billion and one for Kuwait and Tehran.

Six kilometre rail to connect Syokimau station with JKIA

Quote:
A 6.5 kilometre railway line is set to be built to connect the new Syokimau Railway Station with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Already, a 2.2 km branch line has been constructed, linking the Nairobi-Mombasa line to the new station.

According to a plan from the Ministry of Transport on the development of Nairobi Commuter Rail Services, obtained by nation.co.ke, when completed the Nairobi-JKIA rail will measure 21 km.

A rail over road crossing for Mombasa road is to be built for the Syokimau-JKIA for the benefit of pedestrians using the busy road.

The Ministry of Transport said an elevated crossing was considered after the idea of the underground pass was abandoned due to its high cost -- it was estimated to cost Sh3.2 billion.

The elevated cross over is expected to cost Sh1.6 billion.

A rail station is to be located inside JKIA. The airport line design is in progress with trains terminating at Unit 3 for easy access by arriving passengers, ease connection to the departure unit and possibility of developing commercial centre around the station.

Would that 2km of rail be the only one built by independent kenyan govt? If so that would put Kibaki in his own league.

Thanks Serjent, I took the liberty to copy the story: Here it is:

Rail firms receive import materials for repairs, new Nairobi line
Kenya Railway and Rift Valley Railways (RVR) Thursday imported materials for the upgrade of Nairobi- Mombasa rail line and construction of a new commuter line in Nairobi.
Kenya Railways received materials for construction of the double track express railway line to connect Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the Nairobi Railway Station.
MV Feng Kang Shan docked at the Port of Mombasa with materials that cost the government over Sh340 million for the construction of the passengers track between CBD, Embakasi and JKIA.

“This project will reduce traffic jam from the current two hours between the airport and CBD on the busy Mombasa road to less than 30 minutes,” said permanent secretary Ministry of Transport Cyrus Njiru.

The materials were supplied by the KEC International limited, an engineering, procurement, and construction company based in India.
Rift Valley Railways also targets to increase rail cargo traffic on the Nairobi-Mombasa line with the arrival of Sh1.57 billion ($19 million) worth of rail bars for the repair of wornout segments of the line.

Slum dwellers holding Kenya Railways to ransom
http://www.nation.co.ke/Features/sma...h/-/index.html
  • In Summary:
Kenya Railways now forced to spend about Sh3 billion out of the total Sh24 billion that was meant to upgrade the line, to resettle the families living in Kibera and Mukuru slums before plan can be completed....
Quote:
At the Kibera slums, Kenya Railways plans to construct a two-storey building to house the more than 4,000 families affected and create a 20-metre buffer zone on each side.

The company will also accommodate more than 2,700 business units and 252 institutions, which include churches, schools, and hospitals. Each unit will be self-contained, with the ground floor set up as business units and markets.

The wall of the houses will rise to about 15 metres and will be used as a barrier, with the front facing away from the railway line.

At Mukuru slums, the firm will move more than 5,200 families, 4,000 business units, and 18 institutions to a new location near Likoni Road. For Kibera, Kenya Railways will also construct a 2.5 metre wide foot path and underpasses connecting the slum to the Industrial Area and the city centre, where most of the residents work.

This makes a sad reading.Where's integrity in leadership if the legal machinery cannot move folks who are quite clearly illegal occupiers? All that money spent because someone might get hurt politically if the right thing is done.I am left speechless.
