Dhobi ghat dry-cleaned into laundry unit

Quote:
AHMEDABAD: The feverish pace at which the Sabarmati riverfront is coming up one always wondered the fate of the rigorous washing rituals of the Dhobi Ghats of the Sabarmati river. This was the place where once the famous French photojournalist Henri Cartier Bresson had spent hours shooting men and women at the ghats engaged in washing clothes.

But these open laundries would be short lived. The Sabarmati riverfront development corporation limited (SRFDCL) has mooted a plan to construct a 'modern laundry' near Ambedkar bridge. This will be a complex where a number of people engaged in laundry business can set up shops. Whether the SRFDCL will sell, rent out the place to existing laundrymen of the Ghats is yet top be seen. One such the modern laundry is being constructed for traditional washermen in Bangalore in Brindavan Nagar.

The complex will be designed in such a way that at later stage washing machines can be installed in the complex. The complex will have tiers or levels on its roof where those in the laundry business can dry clothes. Provisions for various types of wash will also be available at the complex. "In traditional practice a lot of space goes into drying clothes as they are spread on the river bank. This complex will optimize the space for drying clothes," says a senior SRFDCL official.

The officer also told TOI that provisions for driers and hydro extractors will also be made in the new building. "We are trying to work an economic model for these laundrymen and how they can integrate modern equipment in their washing business. The shift will not be a problem for these washermen," claims the SRFDCL officer.

Obviously I meant a modern laundry area for the washerman. After all the pains they take to beautify the river, they are not stupid to provide the traditional dirty dhobi ghat.

Dude .. why have you a stereotype of tribal in your mind ? I would say tribals who don't live in cities don't utilize any resources and are generally very efficient in using natural resources. Those who get educated are generally much more open minded than other groups. They are very jolly people and hard working.

I agree they are in many ways underdeveloped but that has nothing to to with them. Its genrally the neglect of successive govts that they are in such situation.

Anyways you should not point fingers at a particular community as such , it is insensitive and divisive and not good for the nation.

Mods .. please feel free to delete or move the post !!
What I meant is since orissa has good percentage of tribals growth is slow.
I dont mean tribals are bad people(they are not like naxalites).

Orissa had slow growth because of incompetent politicians like everywhere else in eastern India. It had nothing to do with tribal population. Actually tribal population is much more in chattisgarh which is right now one of the fasters growing states in India. On the other hand Bihar and UP have one of the lowest tribal population in India and you know their situation.( Link ) Your whole logic is wrong and please accept it.

Without Narmada water, this is the original condition of the Sabarmati river...

when you go from 1 to 2,its still a 100% growth. When u move from 90 to 91,its less than 1%.Just saying. Havent got anything against bihar but it really has a long way to go. Precious little has been acheived even under Nitish's rule except an improvement in law and order and female literacy perhaps.

I get your point, but think about it, even Gujarat was at 1 and 2 in the past. What this growth rate of Bihar has done is that it has instilled hope in the people, who have long suffered the unfortunate distinction of being one of the poorest states in the country. From that, to what they have achieved is quite commendable.

AMC plans to ply floating buses on Sabarmati river

LINK

Ahmedabad:After floating restaurants, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) has sought bids from operators who could run amphibious bus in the river. This bus can operate on land and in water.

The plan is to ply the bus across the 11.5 km stretch of the present riverfront. The amphibious bus generally is employed for organizing ‘duck tours’ for sightseers on large lakes or rivers. Duck tours are quite popular in river and lake cities, like Halifax, Albany, Austin, Baltimore, Branson, Chattanooga, Cincinnati-Newport, Pittsburgh, Belfast, Washington DC.

According to the proposal, the operator has to provide the service, and operate and maintain the vehicles. While the SRFDCL will provide space and infrastructure for embarking points, ticketing boots, ramps for lowering the bus into water and waiting area.

The tender further states that the licenses for operating these services will be issued for aperiod of two years.

“The bus will be part of the elaborate entertainment package that we are planning for the riverfront,” said a senior AMC official. “The bus will not only be a mode of transport but also a good sightseeing facility for tourist, who visit the city,” added the official. He claimed that some companies have already shown interested in the plan.

Such buses usually have hydrojets that propel them forward in water. The engines are quite powerful and can carry up to 50 passengers on a trip.

Though the speed of an amphibious bus is equivalent to a streamer in water, on land it runs like any other similarsized vehicle.

Though I'd say the floating restaurants would be the biggest hit. Nothing excites Amdavadis like food...

What if they could open a submerged restaurant in the river, preferably right opposite Patang itself. We would have the highest and lowest restaurants right opposite each other. But that would require water in the river all year long.

thanks Rushabh
I have presented this idea of river tourism to Mr. Vatsal Patel - Town Planner, AMC & Mr. Himanshu Thakker, AUDA during one of our college events on Town Planning.
I have also asked them for developing Indroda Park on sidelines of Singapore Zoo but they have said that Central Govt. rules are very complicated for zoos. They said that while planning for West Ahmedabad around 2003-04 they have proposed a zoo larger and better than existing Kankaria zoo but due govt. problems they have dropped the idea.

Regarding River fountain on Nehru bridge, Municipal Commissioner have said that he will take this to required authorities.

We have also proposed for Giant Ferris wheel on banks of Sabarmati, Development of Sidi Saiyed Jali as urban square by diverting traffic & providing beautiful landscape, Developing S.G Road on sidelines of E11, Dubai and much more

Hope any of these we can add in our city

So this is UAE's E 11 highway :

And this the S G Road

Yes, they can really change the highway, but not by blindly copying Dubai's Highway. We can move this topic to the Discussions thread

Nice pics! Its pretty shocking how clean the riverbed looks though!

But lets not forget the reality here, main priority is always going to be getting water to North Gujarat/Kutch/Saurashtra rather than to this riverfront project.

Really its only raising height of Narmada Dam which will be able to keep good water level in Sabarmati even in summer as well as other low rainfall parts of the state. So although Id rather see Modi stay as Guj CM than lead India, its actually something he would have more influence on if in Centre rather than as CM

Dont worry Modi will most probably win this year. It will be one of the biggest upsets in Indian political history if he loses...
