Pennsville, NJ

i had another meet in woodbury this past weekend, and stopped in pennsville for a little while. (actually, i stopped in the area because i had forgotten to get gas in woodbury, and i wanted to stop for gaas in new jersey since it's cheaper than delaware's gas.)

pennsville doesn't really have anything special. the main road through town is state route 49, and there's no commercial center in the town from all i know. most of the commercial places are along route 49, and consist of convenience stores, car washes, car dealerships, a supermarket, and other typical stuff. the town is pretty much a residential town. from what i understand, most people in pennsville work in wilmington, just across the delaware river. i believe pennsville was recently added to wilmington's metro area by the u.s. census.

the most prominent part of pennsville is riverview beach park. riverview beach park was once an amusement park from the late 1800's until 1967. the park featured many things, most of which were added in the early 1920's after an adjacent farm was bought: a ferris wheel, "the humming bird" and "wild cat" rollercoasters, a man-made lake which featured a small replica of a mississippi showboat, airplanes, bubble bounces, waterslide, pony and zebra rides, a miniature railroad, and other rides. patrons would coem from philadelphia and wilmingotn on the wilson line ferry, which would dock at the pier located on the delaware river in the park.

today, only a couple remnants remain of the old amusement park. most of the lake still exists. the bandstand where concerts were held and the wooden archway which greeted visitors by land still stand.

before i begin with the pictures, let me apologize for any crooked photos. thw winds really whip off of the delaware river.

looking at the old lake from inside riverview beach park. a fountain was added years after the amusement park closed.

a barge makes its way up the delaware river, being towed by tugboats. this barge later went into the port of wilmington.

looking north at the delaware memorial bridge from the park. the delaware memorial bridge is currently the longest twin suspension bridge in the world.

looking across the river to new castle, delaware.

looking across the river to wilmington, delaware.

a closer view of the wilmington skyline.

the lake again, seen from the edge of the delaware river.

a look at the playground equipment installed well after the amusement park closed.

looking north at the city of wilmington and the delaware memorial bridge.

at the southern edge of the park are the pilings which held the pier where the wilson line would come in. not much is left of the pier now.

a skyline photo of wilmington. this might be one of the best angles of wilmington's skyline.

the bandstand, near the front of the park.

the wooden archway welcoming visitors to the old amusement park from state route 49.

now some pictures of the town.

some houses on broadway (route 49), the main road through town.

some houses on highland avenue.

some businesses and the library on broadway.

probably the only storefronts in pennsville, located along broadway.

You got a little bit of the Philly skyline in one of them, Matt.

You're gonna break that poor camera, lol.

i think what you see are the oil refineries in chester.

and yes, one of these days my camera will break. i've dropped it numerous times, and i have gotten a lot of mileage out of my camera. it usually doesn't work in cold weather (i think that has more to do with the batteries though; since switching to rechargable batteries, the camera is more tolerable to cold weather). and i think there's a tiny smudge on the inside of the lens that makes its presence known when i zoom in a lot on something.

Riverview beach park

Enjoyed seeing these pictures.I have some old pictures from the '20's when my Grandmother went there on a regular basis. I was only there once, back in 1982. Hoping to visit there this summer. Also I am new to this site, joined because of these pictures and the Wilmington pics you posted!
