Any idea if they are going to put ceiling at the wavy roof to conceal the underside of the structure? I can see nice-looking-rain water-gutters are 'well incorporated' in the design.

sumatrans outnumbered the whole malaysian by leaps and bounds. It's only natural for them to have bigger and busier airports.

the hardware might be good, but airport experience boils down to comfort and ease of use. I still dont like them collecting airport tax separately from ticket, feels like begging for money. They just can incorporate the tax into ticket price.

I guess mid 2013? You can check earlier articles that stat the completion date.

You are right !
Now, another joke of PIA. Seriously, I think the whole renovation and construction is an international joke now. I have just used the immigration area week ago, damn, it is like sardine tin with cramp of people. And, no proper sign board.

Blackout delays flights at Penang airport
July 02, 2012

GEORGE TOWN, July 2 — Hundreds of passengers waiting for three scheduled flights were stranded at the Penang International Airport for almost an hour due to a power failure at the airport’s Immigration counters.

Passengers waiting to board flights to Thailand, Hong Kong and China and passengers who arrived from Jakarta were stranded from 7.45am to 9.15am.

Airport senior manager Mohd Arif Jaafar said the power failure was due to maintenance work carried out at the airport.

“Due to the power failure, Immigration counters could not function, forcing passengers to be stranded,” he told reporters here today.

Mohd Arif said flights delayed due to the power failure were Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific (CX) Airlines and AirAsia. — Bernama

Reminds me of the time when my mum and sister travelled to Miri from the newly commissioned T2 at BKI (many years ago)
Power failure meant check in baggage could not be scanned - so wait
After power restored and scanned, proceed to check in counter (that was time before online check in you see)
Power failed again, wait again
Eventually I think they resorted to the check in counters' back up UPS and somehow got things done
Unfortunately, next obstacle rendered that effort futile - cannot scan hand luggage and pax at security screen before immigration
I cannot remember what ensued after that, but somehow they both got into Miri that same day

Indonesia is fast catching up with Malaysia, and even their 3rd and 4th cities have airports that feel like international class facilities. Medan's airport surely makes Penang's airport look substandard.

Maybe its time to revisit the idea of having a true international class airport in Butterworth. maybe not now, but certainly in the near future.

sometimes i wonder if all these problems are done on purpose to give people a bad impression of Penang. The state government should take over this airport!

Have to disagree with you on this. Newer airports in indonesia by no doubt looks better than current under-renovation PEN, but when the renovation completed it will be on par with like, Makassar Airport, even the new Kuala Namu airport, and Bali Denpasar. You haven't been to Bandung, which i would say, IPH departure arrival are miles better than the whole airport itself.

Indonesia airports still have a long way to go to match MAHB's international airport stable like KUL, PEN, BKI, KCH and even LGK. Newer airports in Indonesia just need some management change and enforcement to give it international feel like the one we used to in Malaysia and Singapore.
