That's kind of what I was getting at, of course smaller centres don't individually rival the power of Paris but they are viable regional centres in their own right in employment, leisure/retail or transport terms which can collectively act as a counterweight to the metropolis when they act together in common interests.

Most people fly, so a lot of money is poured into airports and runways, etc. It costs as little as $50 to fly from Brisbane to Sydney, and $70+/- to Melbourne... We also have rail, but it takes days so not many people (except the elderly with nothing better to do) use it. Road infrastructure is expensive, though - mainly due to labor costs.

Transportation in Australia does seem to be far more air focused than in Canada. I guess it comes down to our high ticket prices.

And if you live in Perth anywhere is going to be a very loooong drive, it isn't as if you have cities over the the border either that are driveable like US cities for Canada.
