World focuses on Cape Town as top-class setting for movies
The international film industry is demonstrating an increased interest in filming in Cape Town after major films such as Invictus,Dredd and Safehouse were filmed in SA. ![]() The City Hall is Transformed. Left: Adderly Street is almost unrecognisable. Below: A car crash rehearsal on Wale Street. The Cape Film Commission announced on Wednesday that after a "successful trade mission" at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, producers for documentaries, feature films and independent shorts had enquired about filming in Cape Town. This includes a $ 50 million (R428m) Hollywood production that has the potential to turn into a fourfilm series. In the first three days of the festival, the commission received more than $350m of enquiries from international film-makers looking to film in the city and partner local production companies. "Cape Town is principally a servicerelated industry to the international feature film industry," Denis Lillie, CEO of the Cape Film Commission, said. "But that's changing." Big productions had "got the word out that we are capable of managing these types of projects". The Cape Town film industry also saw success at Cannes with the Irish/SA Film Treaty - an agreement allowing film-makers to take advantage of production opportunities across country lines. "The exchange rate is in favour of film-making," said Lillie. "The slightly weakening rand makes it a very attractive location." In October, SA also removed its R20m cap on tax refunds that productions could claim. While it is difficult to pinpoint how much revenue the industry brings to the city, the Western Cape industry is is estimated to be worth R5.5 billion. |

Unfortunately things are very expensive - "good" rental deals don't really exist in the bowl for a furnished apartment.

Oh joy...Inertia has brought his renowned realism and honesty with him from Joburg!
What about Century City? There are good deals there...but my personal pick would be Sea Point...in the grungier bits back from Beach rd, there are hundreds of furnished apartments at good prices...and the area really isn't that bad, there are people about 24/7.

Love this place...
Being month end and all, I decided to pop out for lunch on a samoosa hunt (all I can afford pre payday). Within two city blocks I found quality samoosas, and was once again amazed at this vibrant city centre I live in. From the earth fair food market, top end of St George Mall, to the busy sidewalk cafes, there's a cosmopolitan vibe all around. Humanity on display! I feel privileged today!...Just thought I'd share that.
Ps. Seems like Newspaper House is nearing completion and it's looking good! (I'll snap some images tomorrow) Last edited by Citywalker_CT; June 21st, 2012 at 06:53 PM. |

Yup! Must agree. I took the train in this morning, then a leisurely walk up St George's Mall and up Queen Victoria Street to the French Consulate (to pick up a passport), and then back through the Company Gardens and down back to the station. Then had some time to kill before my train, so I took a walk to Thibault Square and watched some man feed the pigeons (was that you? hahahh). Even on a cool and overcast day, the streets and public spaces were alive and vibrant. And I quite like those retail pods in the station now that they're done. Just wondering who'll occupy them. Question: Does anybody know what will happen with the beautiful old Standard Bank in Adderley street now that they've moved their branch?
I had drinks at The Reserve, also an old bank building. And what a stunning space... Would be nice if they could open Standard Bank building up to us all!!

Boulders in TripAdvisor's top 10
2012-06-22 09:02 TripAdvisor has named Boulders Beach as one of its top 10 truly unique beaches in the world, Cape Town Tourism reports. The beach took eighth place on the list, joining beaches such as Hyams Beach, Australia; Mineral Beach, Israel; and Punaluu Beach, Hawaii. The world's largest travel site, TripAdvisor offers honest advice from real travellers and has given many a wannabe traveller information and guidance on travelling in foreign countries. Forming part of the Table Mountain National Park, Boulders Beach charges an entrance fee that is used to continue conserving the approximately 3 000 endangered African penguins of the colony. TripAdvisors top 10 truly unique beaches in the world are: 1. Maho Beach, St. Maarten, Caribbean - where you can watch aeroplanes take off and land 2. Glass Beach, Fort Bragg, California - a beach made of polished glass pebbles 3. Pfeiffer Big State Beach, Big Sur, California - a beach of purple sand 4. Palawan Beach, Singapore - a man-made artificial beach 5. Punaluu Beach, Hawaii - with its black sand beach 6. Mineral Beach, Dead Sea, Israel - where you can float on the sea 7. Well the list is made up of what they consider to be "unique beaches." A beach made of glass pebbles definitely falls under that category in my books...

New Khoisan name for Cape Town
New Khoisan name for Cape Town
Cape Town - It may take some getting used and some Capetonians will probably have difficulty getting their tongue around the Mother City’s new name: //Hui !Gaeb. This Khoisan word means “where the clouds gather”, reported the Weekend Argus. The name change was proposed by the Khoisan community as they gathered for a memorial service for their traditional leader, Dawid Kruiper, who died earlier this month. Tania Kleinhans of the Institute for the Restoration of the Aborigines of SA said after the city name change was proposed in honour of Kuiper, she had approached fast food chain Nando's, in recognition of their recent controversial TV ad on diversity. “We love the advert, because it is based on facts. It is not about racism, xenophobia or diversity. It shows that we are the original people of SA,” she said. Nando’s had apparently enthusiastically agreed to sponsoring billboards to advertise Cape Town’s new name, which would from next week be seen on the N2 and in the city centre outside the Castle. http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/Ne...-Town-20120625 |
