ILOILO CITY, June 21 (PIA) -- The Department of Tourism has invited six accredited tour operators in Western Visayas for a one-day tour packaging conference and seminar on Friday.

A Cebu Pacific flight from Hong Kong is scheduled to arrive on the last week of October or early November this year, the first international flight to be accommodated at the Iloilo Airport.

“We have more than 100 tour operators in the region which are licensed by the local government units, but only six tour operators have passed DOT accreditation standards,” DOT-6 officer-in-charge-director Helen J. Catalbas said in a PIA interview.

During the meeting in Iloilo City, the tour operators along with the hotel operators will discuss tour packages to come up with efficient services that can lure further tourists to visit Western Visayas regularly as their tourist destination.

Tour operators play a vital role in attracting tourists through tour packages.

“Several foreign tourists even our domestic tourists are now aware of other beautiful and interesting spots in the region that is why it is necessary to have a networking with the tour operators in order to strengthen the tourism industry in step with President Aquino’s campaign to project the Philippines as a tourists’ destination in Asia.

The OIC-Director of DOT-6 also said that last year, the region recorded about 2.4 million tourists and 509,000 of which were foreign tourists and 1.8 million were local tourists.

As to the opening of the international flights in Iloilo Airport, Catalbas said that “this is a regular passenger flights coming from Hong Kong and Singapore and vice versa.”

Catalbas said that the flight from Iloilo to Hong Kong will be done four times a week while the Singapore flights are slated three times a week.

“If the plane’s destination today for example, is Iloilo-Hong Kong-Iloilo route, the following day it would be Iloilo-Singapore-Iloilo slate,” Catalbas pointed out as she noted that the flight schedules will be during night time and early in the morning so it will not affect the already existing domestic flight schedules at the airport. SEAIR launches daily flights to Iloilo Airport

South East Asian Airlines (SEAir), the premiere leisure airlines in the Philippines, will operate daily flights from Manila to Iloilo (and vice-versa) starting August 2, 2012. SEAir’s entry to the Iloilo Airport is a welcome development to Ilonggos as it means more choices for passengers and increased inflow of tourists and investments to Iloilo. Currently, the Iloilo Airport is the fourth busiest airport in the Philippines accommodating 320 (inbound and outbound) flights per week.

SEAir will also open new flights to six other Philippine destinations: Cebu (July 31), Davao (starting August 18), Tacloban (August1), Puerto Princesa (August 3), Boracay via Kalibo (August 4) and Bacolod (August 20). The flights will operate from the Manila Domestic Airport (Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 4) using newly-acquired Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft.

Direct international flights from Iloilo to Hongkong and Singapore

Iloilo City, the gateway to Panay and the world-famous Boracay Island (only 4 hours by bus), will just be a flight away from Hongkong or Singapore beginning October this year.

I am elated to see that this development is one of the last pieces of the puzzle to connect the Philippines to the rest of Indochina or Southeast Asia backpacking trail.

The pocket open skies policy makes it possible for flights from Korea, Singapore, Thailand and other areas to land in Iloilo Airport on direct international flights said DOTC Secretary Manuel Roxas.

Budget carrier Cebu Pacific Air has already signified interest to mount a four times a week flight from Iloilo to Hongkong (v.v) and thrice a week Iloilo to Hongkong (v.v) flights. Plane tickets to these flights can be booked beginning July.

Cebu Pacific Air will also open flights from Iloilo to Puerto Princesa City in Palawan. This is a welcome news for many travelers or backpackers who want to visit El Nido and Coron in Palawan from Boracay Island but are pressed for time.

Iloilo to Palawan (via Cuyo) connection is currently served by a slow boat which takes 36 hours of sailing across the Sulu Sea.

OFWs, seamen to benefit from direct international flights in Iloilo
By Lydia C. Pendon

ILOILO CITY – Thousands of overseas Filipino contract workers and seamen residing in Iloilo and the rest of Western Visayas will benefit immensely from the proposed direct international flights from Hongkong and Singapore to the Iloilo airport of international standards in Cabatuan, Iloilo.

Tourism Reg. Dir. Helen Catalbas said the travel market emerging from the Ilonggo workers is so vast. OFWs have been lobbying for direct international flights to Iloilo and vice versa so as to save transportation costs without passing Manila or Cebu airports anymore.

Iloilo City, as regional capital of Western Visayas, is hosting a maritime university as foremost training ground for seamen and several colleges and universities as training centers for professionals who go abroad to work.

On the other hand, Iloilo and the rest of Panay Island produce thousands of workers such as technical men and domestic helpers for abroad work particularly in Hongkong and Saudi Arabia.

Catalbas said that Cebu Pacific Airlines had assured of regular passenger flights from the Iloilo airport to Hongkong and vice versa for four times a week and Iloilo to Singapore three times a week.

The direct international flights are proposed to start before the end of October or early November this year.

Similarly, the DOT official is hopeful that on top of OFWs and seamen, international visitors will take the Hongkong and Singapore as jump-off routes in going to Iloilo and Western Visayas.

Catalbas said there is an urgent need for a sustained campaign to attract plane passengers to take the Iloilo route because airlines will immediately stop the routes without enough passengers.

Airline sustains cargo lead in Q1

Saturday, June 23, 2012
sunstar.com.ph

CEBU Pacific (CEB) transported more domestic cargo than other airlines in the first quarter (Q1) of 2012, according to recently released Civil Aeronautics Board data.

CEB carried 22.1 million kilograms in cargo in the first quarter, besting the combined cargo loads carried by both Philippine Airlines and Airphil Express, it said in a press statement.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

“We captured 48 percent of the domestic cargo market in Q1. This highlights Cebu Pacific’s extensive domestic network. With multiple daily flights to most key cities in the Philippines, cargo forwarders and shippers trust CEB to bring their valuable cargo in the soonest possible time,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

CEB also led the domestic cargo market in 2011 with close to 89.5 million kilos carried.

The airline increased domestic capacity in Q1 2012, with the arrival of one more brand-new Airbus A320 aircraft last January. At present, CEB operates 52 routes to 32 domestic destinations. Network expansion plans include the arrival of three more Airbus A320 aircraft in the second half of 2012, as well as the launch of four times weekly Davao-Kalibo and Davao-Puerto Princesa flights.

“CEB currently services more than 2,000 accounts, tailor-fitting cargo products to our clients’ needs” Iyog added. (PR)

Jimenez: DOT region sees Iloilo as a bright prospect for international flights

In Iloilo City, talks are moving about that DOT OIC-Regional Director Atty. Helen Catalbas is too enthusiastic for her region to become one of the hubs for Asian routes. In such manner, Attorney Helen is trying to tell everyone in the region that indeed Western Visayas could be used as a link for connecting destinations to other Asian countries like Malaysia, or Hong Kong or Singapore or even Bangkok.

Rumors have it that Iloilo City could be the better choice as the gateway for other regional destinations. And by the looks of it all, yes, it is Iloilo that could be the possible jump-off for flights to Singapore or Hong Kong. Iloilo City's advantage over Bacolod is that the present routes of Iloilo-Cagayan-Iloilo and Iloilo-Davao-Iloilo now in Iloilo Airport and will pave the way for travelers' convenience.

Those from Davao and neighboring provinces including Cagayan de Oro City and nearby, plus General Santos will opt to fly to Iloilo City to connect their travel to Singapore or Hong Kong. This is where the travel opportunities would increase.

***

Instead of flying to Manila, this would give the Mindanaoans a fifty-percent travel savings. Similarly, those from Panay and Negros will not any more fly to Manila to connect to Asean nations.

***

In my experience, I really hate why the walkalators in the NAIA Terminal 3 do not operate for the arriving passengers. It seems the Philippine government is wise and too frugal in extending the service to travelers.

***

In Bacolod-Silay Airport, the toilet paper is insufficient. In the Manila airports, confiscation of prohibited light materials like perfume, umbrella and other items that could not be hand-carried are not being destroyed. Airport Security should destroy these materials or else they will be suspected of taking these items back their homes.

***

For the courtesy of it all, airport services should include safekeeping of left-behind items so that the passengers could still reclaim them for a reasonable deposit fee. Why don't the airport police think of creative ways to build up their image in society?

Hmmm... not really... most often Davao peeps like to go to Manila simply to make a stop over to some of their relatives before going off to other countries. Similarly, Davao has a singapore link which is doubly convenient for some since most passengers that use silk air usually use Singapore as a transit point to other destinations around the world.... I wonder how this reporter got this idea. I can't comment of Cagayan de Oro and General Santos. About Savings? not really much since most of these travelers end up having someone buying their tickets (most often kasi OFW). But anyway, cheers for Iloilo if these routes pushes through...
