The swimming centre has been refurbished for the 1978 swimming WC, it is still in use as a public swimming pool.

So why did't they built a 3rd tier?
In mid 1935 Hitler made an inspection at the stadium, he was disapointed of the scale of it, particulary of the facade. He ordered the architect Werner March to make plans for a 3rd tier, but it was too late to realize it just 1 year before the Olympic Games.
With a 3rd tier the capacity during the 1936 games had been 150,000
(now 114,000)

There was a superb three-part documentary on Berlin in 2009 on the BBC (one part dedicated solely to its architecture). Here's the bit on Hitler's Stadium:

6 or so years on from it's renovation and it's still absolutely majestic.

agreed. it's just an ageless stadium. the kind of architecture a lot of modern stadiums lack.

Don't mean to dwell on Olympiastadion's "roof support issue" but can someone (preferably someone with an engineering background) explain to me why it is not possible to support the roof with a series of cables attached above the roof? It's only cable (high tech so very thin) so therefore there would not have been any damage of the historical symmetry of the stadium. All you need is just a bunch of poles in the place of where the flag-poles are now planted at the base of the roof and then thin cables going from the top of the pole to the edge of the front side of the roof. Basically what I'm suggesting is a bunch of very strong flag-poles hoisting cables instead of flags

Even all the facilities for the WC 2006 had been built underground (near the Coubertin Square), so poles will never be allowed!

May be an arch will be build for the next Olympics in Berlin (2024/2028/2032/2040???) to support the roof.

Then get rid of the goddamn underground facilities. Who cares about those?

What's most important here is what needs to be preserved: the majesty of what is above ground.

An arch?? Like Wembliey? Are you kidding?

That is out of the question. It would ruin the whole germetry of the area and become the dominant feature of this historic neighbourhood.

Not arch thanks. That would be the worst possible solution
