Simple really.. The ones that get built make financial sense. Usually that equates to something less adventurous but functional and suited to the needs of the market.

It does get frustrating though.

I've delayed commenting on this thread because I felt sick in stomach when I saw what could have been. (drama much?)
I then consoled myself by realising that not only do we have some brilliant examples of architecture already but there's a lot more to come as well. I think we're really very fortunate in this city...although I'd of still LOVED the Foster one!

A picture. Just a picture till contracts are signed and cranes on the ground.

I dont buy the idea we shouldnt build stunning becoz it makes the rest of the city look bad. Tough. Should be constant renewal and growth. Classic buildings will stay because they are classic, not because they are old.

Because of this?

is the foster one completely dead and buried or is there a slim chance that it may come through? (pardon my ignorance)

http://www.studio505.com.au/work/pro...central-pier/3

A competition entry for the development of a central pier in Melbourne Docklands. A major pedestrian and green edge spine was proposed between the sheds, allowing service vehicles beneath.

studio505's scheme proposed a series of floating gardens that could be independently driven around the bay for small functions and parties. The gardens could be gathered to the pier or connected across the waterfront city to create pedestrian linkages across the harbour.

This is one of those rare occasions I'm glad this hasn't eventuated. Personally I believe Central Pier deserves a building of high international standard jutting out across the water. Potentially something in the arts to finally inject some activity down there.

This is where I think its a real shame that MTC moved to Sturt Street with the new Recital Centre. I wish it was built on Central Pier. Something amazing about having theatre right on the water, similar to STC at Walsh Bay in Sydney.

Otherwise the biggest gap in Melbourne's arts scene is it doesn't really have a major modern art gallery. Brisbane has GoMa, Sydney has MCA, I think something like "NGV Modern" would be highly successful.

From what I read in the past, an NGV Modern is on the agenda but funding is not there for it currently. I had heard that it was a part of the Sturt Street arts spine development plans. I would love to see it in Docklands though, spreading the attractions around the city.

Spot on!

Melbourne has ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art), but I reckon that this collection should expand and move to new premises in a purpose-built gallery on Central Pier.
The existing ACCA building could still be used for the arts - maybe an extension of the Malthouse / Chunky Move dance theatre. It could be entirely dedicated to modern dance.

ACCA has no permanent collection - it's just an exhibition space.

Not so, we have the Heide Museum of Modern Art:

People forget that it is there because it's in the suburbs.

Yes, so. Read my original post, the operative word is "major". Heide is fantastic and I have been there dozens of times in my life but it is a private institution, a boutique art gallery not unlike Mona in Hobart. It cannot, at all, be compared to the likes of MCA Sydney or GoMa Brisbane, which are major institutions with substantial federal and state funding.

Yes, we have ACCA at Southbank but it too fails to stack up. I believe Melbourne is Australia's most creative city, hands down, and could support a major modern art gallery to compliment ACCA and Heide.

/South East Stadium Precinct

Docklands, Victoria

Proposal submitted with Investa for a four stage development adjacent to Etihad Stadium in Melbourne’s Docklands. Comprising corporate offices, residential apartments and a sports and recreation centre, together with a retail arcade linking the Southern Cross Station Bridge with Etihad Stadium.

An integrated sustainable development, the proposal incorporated feature art graphics in the facades of the towers and reflects Spowers history with Investa in the area of commercial sustainable developments.

Don't forget Tarrawarra too. When Ian Potter was being proposed, I seem to recall there was some discussion about how to split the NGV collection over the two sites. I guess it could have become a modern art museum but they decided to split it geographically instead of chronologically. Given the NGV's pre 20th century collection is so strong it was probably the way to go. Its just a different approach, a museum with 3 campuses in a city the size of Melbourne would be overkill.

ACCA just needs to be re-launched as a MAJOR centre insted of the smallish boutique that it is atm...new mission, new budget, new building (? in Docklands?)...old ACCA can be re-purposed.
