Indoor sports complex coming to Mississauga
This is just north of Dundas and Mavis.
Check link for pictures... http://www.mississauga.com/sports/ar...to-mississauga Joseph Chin | Jun 22, 2012 - 11:37 AM Canlan Ice Sports, North America’s largest private sector owner/operator of recreational ice sports facilities is opening a new complex in Mississauga.123Mississauga will soon be home to a new indoor sports complex. It will be built by Canlan Ice Sports, North America’s largest private sector owner/operator of recreational ice sports facilities. Canlan owns or manages 21 facilities across Canada and the U.S., six in the GTA. According to Dan D’Alvise, general manager of the Etobicoke facility, the company is awaiting final permits which it expects to receive today. Construction will then begin immediately on the site at 3350 Wolfedale Rd. where Rockett Lumber used to be located. Canlan hopes to have the facility up and running by the end of this year. When completed, the 55,000-sq.-ft. multi-sport complex will include two artificial turf fields suitable for soccer and three outdoor beach volleyball courts. “This will be Canlan’s first non-ice facility focusing on field and court sports,” said D’Alvise. In addition, it will offer private party and event rooms with fully-licensed food and beverage service. The facility will be equipped with nine large overhead “garage-style” doors which will easily transform the indoor centre into an open-air complex to give participants the feeling of being outdoors while remaining sheltered from the sun or rain. Canlan is already taking inquiries and bookings, along with individual and team registrations for the league.

Thanks guys, funny that it took me longer to find the photo of the tram (in that angle) on google images, than to actually edit it into jason's photo.
And that is a good point Pardath. Maybe they'll just widen the lanes on the sides. Or narrow all the lanes by a couple inches. |

They should build an arena in MCC. If the Steelheads (Majors) can't draw big crowds I don't see how this team can.
http://www.mississauga.com/sports/ar...ball-franchise Iain Colpitts | Jun 22, 2012 - 7:18 PM Mississauga a strong contender for basketball franchise National Basketball League of Canada executives are optimistic that a franchise can succeed in Mississauga. The city is on a short list of Ontario applicants for an expansion team, which will be granted when the league meets for its annual general meeting in Toronto on Wednesday and Thursday. The professional league is heading into its second season and is trying to increase its presence in Ontario. Despite being in close proximity to the National Basketball Association's Toronto Raptors, NBLC president and CEO Andre Livingston feels a team can be successful in Mississauga. "We always get the question of is it too close to Toronto with the Raptors being there and I say no," said Livingston, who owns the Halifax Rainmen, one of seven teams in the league. "I can take a family of four to an NBLC game cheaper than I could to a Raptors game. "The level of competition may not be up to the NBA, but these guys are extremely athletic, fast, strong and still have aspirations to get an NBA tryout. I think Mississauga has everything in place to host a professional team." A group from Mississauga has expressed interest in forming a team while other groups from Windsor and Kingston are also in the running. The Mississauga group, which chose to remain anonymous, missed the June 15 deadline to file all of its forms, but has been given an extension by the league and now has until Tuesday to meet the league's requirements. "We want to make sure that the group has the means to be fiscally responsible," Livingston said. "This is a huge investment and we want to make sure they have the means to fulfill the league obligations. We'll continue doing our background on the owners and we want to make sure they can get a lease in place that gives them the opportunity to be successful." St. Catharines, Ottawa and Kitchener have also expressed interest, but Ottawa and Kitchener didn't appear to have financial backing for long-term stability while the group in St. Catharines was hesitant to invest money in an aging arena. St. Catharines will likely re-enter the expansion discussion once its new arena is built in 2014. All seven teams from the league's inaugural season, including Ontario's London Lightning and Oshawa Power, are returning next season, though the Quebec Kebs will be relocating from Quebec City to another venue within the province. The other teams in the league are the Saint John Mill Rats, Summerside Storm and Moncton Miracles. Once Mississauga's expansion package is filed, league executives and owners will vote on who will be granted a franchise. That decision will be made by Thursday. icolpitts@mississauga.net

Plans for Brampton-Mississauga LRT on track
Posted By: James Moore james.moore@astral.com · 6/25/2012 2:51:00 PM http://www.newstalk1010.com/News/loc...tryID=10398051 After 2 years of research and planning, Monday is the first time residents can see detailed concepts for a 22-kilometre, 28-stop light rail line that would start in Port Credit and extend north on Hurontario Street, all the way to the downtown Brampton GO station. Public consultation sessions go Monday night at Brampton's Rose Theatre (3pm - 8pm) and Tuesday at the Mississauga Civic Centre (3pm - 8pm), where officials will share their vision for a north-south LRT link for the 905 area. Matthew Williams, LRT Project Manager with the City of Mississauga says feedback from the public will be collected at the consultation sessions. Planners and engineers will use that to decide where to add stops or drop them and how best to add a rail line to Hurontario Street that accomodates vehicle and pedestrian traffic. "It is our largest transit-used corridor and we have a very high volume of transit users in the corridor today and its also a real spine between the two communities," says Williams. He adds at least 30,000 riders already take bus lines along Hurontario Street each day. According to Metrolinx, the LRT line would cost roughly $1 billion but that's likely going to change as the system design gets fine-tuned with feedback from the public. Williams says planners will come back to the table with a recommended design in November. "Right now, we're really focused on the actual rail section; where the tracks go and where the stops are but as we come out in November we really want to expand that discssion to make sure people understand what the streetscaping is and what all the other urban rail elements are," he says. The goal is to start putting tracks down in 2014 but that depends on whether funding dollars from Ottawa and the province will be available. The City of Mississauga, the City of Brampton and Metrolinx are all working on the project. http://lrt-mississauga.brampton.ca/E...ookieSupport=1

Galleria Supermarkets is planning a two storey East Asian mall near Dundas/Dixie across the street from the Walmart and Dollarama, on the site of the old Addison GM dealership. Nice addition to the neighbourhood IMO.

I was at the Canada Day celebrations at the square last night. The fireworks were the best I've ever seen. Soon as it ended, it really dawned on me how great it is that Mississauga has an interesting and dynamic downtown. And yes, we did close down some streets. It wasn't the end of the world. We are a city, you know. The foot traffic alone rivalled Toronto. I'm very optimistic about the future of our downtown.
Happy Canada Day, everybody!
