Also - when I first moved to Highgate - nobody wanted to live there. It was full of hookers, dead junkies in alleyways, you would get broken into on the regular. And that's just the start.

Freo has everything going for it, and one day, it *will* be one of the most desirable places in the Perth metro area to live.

Weeknights in Freo are pretty lively on the strip, more so than just about anywhere else in the city. Not sure what people are on about. Going down tonight, I'd bring back some photographic evidence, except I'm hopeless at night photography.

Fully agree. We're actually quite lucky, Fremantle has a completly different feel to other areas of Perth. A lot of creative energy there at fine grain level plus architecture thats the envy of the rest of the country. It just needs a few more higher density residential developments in the outer ring to light the touch paper!

There are plans for a new bar apparently opposite flipside/ mrs browns north freo, in the Matilda Antiques building.

But would they want you? I grew up in Medina Kwinana, there were the fibro and timber houses in one area for the workers and a brick area for the managers. Fremantle was our "capital city" and where I went to school. Decent parts were East Fremantle where the wharfies lived and around Beaconsfield for the European migrants. Also lived in Subiaco, same attitudes as Fremantle only now lots more money. The Subi Post and the local Freo paper are rather similar in not wanting development in order to keep transients out.

I now live in Highgate (14 years) which is far more tolerant of change and diversity. I think this is because there is a turnover of people every 2nd generation or so. The Muslim Afghans camel drivers camped in Hyde Park - their Mosque dates from 1905; The Synagogue was in Brisbane Street, after WW11 displaced people came from Europe and now moved to McMansions and then after 1975 Vietnamese boat people. 20 years ago Sacred Heart and St Marks Schools were mainly white taught by nuns and Christian Brothers. Now it's Chinese and Vietnamese parents bringing their kids to school and no nuns or brothers. In contrast John Curtin in Freo has become run down.

Fremantle's very popular with tourists, local and eastern states for the reasons you all mention.

I've just looked at the census 2011 results for postcode 6003 and Fremantle, of some interest.

Freo is a no brainer. Potential coming out of its ears. Is dead now, buy could be awesome with minimal effort within a short time once the planets align.

prices in south freo are outrageous now though, in a lot of cases more expensive than highgate etc

the growth there in the last 5 years has been extraordinary

interesting things happening in the area though.

I lived in a 2-bedroom rented apartment in East Fremantle near the Royal George a while back and I shudder to think what a place in that location (even with the crappiness of the building I was in) would rent for these days.

by Perth standards Freo would be one of the most interesting places to live. It has more variety than anywhere else I could think of. Shame you sill need to put up with overpriced establishments and hit and miss service but that's Perth.

A lot of people in Perth probably have never seen that garden either.
