Sensation is coming to Barclays for 2 nights in a row with the Innerspace show, what a blow for MSG.

Yes, that is a large part but not the only part of it. Construction workers around here make a very good living.

Yankee Stadium cost billion dollars to build though. And that seats 50000 +

I just found out that the mosque that had had connections to Osama bin Laden is located right down the street (Atlantic Ave) from the Barclays Center.

This might start an argument but...oh, well...

KHL’s Brooklyn games are official, as Russian league official trashes MSG
By Dmitry Chesnokov | Puck Daddy – 18 hours ago

For some time now we have known that the KHL was planning to play a few games in Brooklyn at the new Barclays Center. But now we have the actual confirmation.

The KHL released their 2012-2013 calendar and slated two days in January for their overseas trip. KHL's Vice President Vladimir Shalaev told Sovetsky Sport the two regular season games will be held on January 19 and 20. Dynamo Moscow and SKA St. Petersburg will be the teams representing the KHL.

For what it's worth: The New York Islanders are home on Jan. 19 while the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils are on the road that weekend.
Speaking to the media this morning, Shalaev said, "The Barclays Center easily surpasses the New York Rangers' home at Madison Square Garden as a hockey venue."

He added "there's nothing good about [MSG]. Anyone who's been there understands that arena is no longer suited to modern hockey."

We will certainly disagree with this statement.

for most buildings, labor and material are roughly 50/50 of the total cost. the cost of living in new york is very high. you need professionals to build in this city and on complex projects.

while i do have some disagreements with the way some unions behave, i would not trust a complicated project to non-union workers.

Labor Unions need to be done away with. They stand in the way of progress.

Kind of a vague statement, don't you think?

Labor Unions are the reason why most of the benefits and labor laws we have today exist. While some of them have grown into 800-lb gorillas (such as carpenter unions who won't let any work be done on a job site using a hammer if it is not done by them), the majority of them are not a bad as the stereotype.

As for the reason why this arena costs significantly more than a similar arena in say, Memphis ($250 million in 2002), just off the top of my head:
1) It's in the most expensive urban real estate in the country.
2) 10 years of inflation for construction materials (for example: structural steel costs about $900 ton these days, up from about $100 in 2002).
3) The proximity to underground rail lines make the foundations significantly more complicated (and expensive) than standard foundations for an empty lot in Memphis.
4) The compact construction site makes on site staging impossible. That requires the project to go on longer and cost to go up.

None of that is union related.

What's the reasoning behind the huge gap in the end section without any seating?

New York Metropolitan Area is cluttered with new and existing arena:

Prudential Center
Madison Square Garden
Nassau Coliseum
Barclays
MetLife Stadium
Izod Center

That's alot of seats is that bad????
