I'm reading an excellent book at the moment:

Lost Victorian Britain by Gavin Stamp

A lot of sad losses and highlights the almost vindictive attitude towards Victorian architecture that started post-WW1.

I don't have access to a scanner so unfortunately cannot upload any pictures from it.

This is a book that contains all building concepts for all office buildings built in london in the 50s, It would be good if someone owns a copy,

here are some images from it, I wonder if any of them survive?

If you look at the bottom of the model in the second picture, it says where it is - Kingsway. I quite like both buildings, especially The Peacock Theatre - although dated, it's a good example of the period.

They may be good examples of their time, but for me that's their only merit.

I dread to think what a city full of these would look like - the models remind me of the backdrop from a Thunderbirds set. Buildings like this symbolise the first detrimental steps in London's post-war architecture.

Whatever its merits, unfortunately this building replaced the Stoll Theatre, a great loss to London.

In small doses and in the right place, this style of architecture OK. It's far more interesting than many building styles that followed. As for the Peacock, I like its use of Portland stone, reflecting nearby buildings, and its clean lines. It could look great if it was spruced up.

Back to Lost London with more contrasts from Roll the Dice's brilliant Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/rollthe...7603498062914/

You could almost fill this thread from Roll the Dice's Old London set alone, well worth taking a look.

1. Cannon Street 1966-2010.

2. Holborn Viaduct 1961-2010

3. Blackfriars 1929-2009

4. Blackfriars Station Early 1960s-2008

This is what the Peacock Theatre replaced:

Then:

London Opera House, had a 272 ft facade, 80ft tall and housed an auditorium with 2660 seats (larger than both Albert Hall and the Royal Opera House). 14 large statues by Thomas Rudge lined the top.
