The Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto is the exclusive Canadian venue next year for an exhibition of Florentine masterpieces from the 14th century, curated in association with the famous J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

The show, titled Revealing the Renaissance: Art in Early Florence, reportedly includes an estimated 100 paintings, sculptures, stained glass and manuscripts, including two hand-written copies of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Details of the exhibition are expected to be announced Wednesday morning. The exhibition’s three-month run starts March 16, 2013 and draws on artifacts from the Getty collection as well as holdings in Europe and the United States.

Toronto Star article:
Party to Launch Humber Bridge Sculptures Postponed

CHRISTINE IRVING PHOTO
A giant fibreglass "squid", seen in the artists' studio in the Joy Oil gas station building on Lake Shore Blvd. W., was hung from the Humber Bridge on Thursday, but the party had to be postponed.

Squid are ocean creatures, but a launch party for two giant fibreglass cephalopods was cancelled due to a bit too much water. The massive sculptures — 4 and 6 metres long — were successfully hung from the Humber Bridge Thursday, but a nighttime party with aerialists and fire performers was nixed because of rain. “We want to make sure it’s safe for everyone . . . so we can celebrate all the passionate volunteers who put their blood, sweat and tears into this,” said Stacey Feldman of Interactive Arts, the collective that created the sculptures.

The party will be postponed until next Thursday, but the dangling squid are ready to be admired by anyone crossing the pedestrian bridge that spans the Humber River south of Lake Shore Blvd. W. Interactive Arts has been building the sculptures for months — volunteering time and its own funds for supplies — after winning approval from local councillors Sarah Doucette and Mark Grimes. The brightly painted creatures are filled with 1,200 LED lights programmed to interact with the environment, changing colour depending on wind and sunlight.

They weigh 90 and 270 kilograms and are suspended by guy wire, an industrial-strength wire used in radio towers. Two harnessed climbers spent all day Thursday mounting the sculptures using pulleys and cranks, Feldman said.

Wonder why they chose the squid? I thought it was a giant molar that had been extracted.

With fire sperm painted on it.

That said I like the bright colours. Adds some flava.

LOL @ firesperm!

I pass by this bridge 20x daily yet haven't decided to look up to see the sculpture. It's this weather.. I'm telling you! People on my commute looked like they lost a close relative this morning.
