After seeing many photos of pre-war Danzig/Gdansk, it seems to me that the inhabitants lived in a much larger dwellings (an enormous amount of tenement houses). Do you know why Poles after the war replaced the idea of tenement house per family for small flats in blocks or tenement houses, but split into small apartments?

Imagine a war ravaged country with whole cities razed causing a severe lack of accommodation. Remember that the country was poor and could not afford too much. Add to that a government with egalitarian ideology. The result must be exactly what we got.

Are new homes more spacious than those built just after the war? As the country gets richer, does the idea of a tenement house per family is coming back into vogue?

PS. Is it possible to buy a tenement house in the Gdansk city centre? How much would it cost? I found one advert, but I believe this is just a joke:
http://translate.googleusercontent.c...SFbcROCPgenjEA
According to this advert, tenement house costs around 400k EUR or 320k GBP.

It's much, much more expensive than houses in a beautiful Lübeck: http://translate.googleusercontent.c...2VORjHhC_BA9gA where you can buy larger town house (5 apartments, 2 commercial units, 14 rooms) in the Old Town area for around 380k EUR or less...

Why prices are so sky-high in Gdansk?!

There is one in the market for about 2 years now
http://dom.gratka.pl/tresc/402-10710...ganiarska.html

Whole - original ! - tenament house.

But, please, go back to the history - before II War (and even today) lot of population lived in terrible conditions. Despite sanitation, my grandfather and his family shared 2 rooms for 9 individuals in Poznań. In second room, they run a shop... Check out Gunter Grass family house in Wrzeszcz - similar situation.

As I thought, beautifully renovated tenement house in the Lübeck Old Town (http://translate.googleusercontent.c...2VORjHhC_BA9gA) costs ~800 EUR per sqm and not renovated tenement house in the Gdansk Old Town costs 8500 PLN per sqm (~2000 EUR per sqm). Can someone explain why prices in Gdansk are so unattractive and almost 3 times higher than in Lübeck?

Ah, location of the house in Lübeck (the one on the left):

1) Lübeck isn't the economic centre in this part of Germany, that's Hamburg.
2) The number of preserved and reconstructed buildings in Lübeck is much higher (supply and demand).
3) Germany doesn't have a housing bubble (yet).
4) Wealth is (still) more evenly spread and not focused on a few big cities.

Average salary in Gdansk is around 700 EUR (net) monthly. Does this sound like an economic centre?
2) The number of preserved and reconstructed buildings in Lübeck is much higher (supply and demand).
Agreed.
3) Germany doesn't have a housing bubble (yet).
Agreed. Probably, we will see housing crisis in Poland sooner (for example houses in small Elblag are also more expensive than in Lübeck).
4) Wealth is (still) more evenly spread and not focused on a few big cities.
Agreed.
