If you believe the hotly anticipated annual rankings compiled by Florida International University professor and coastal expert Stephen P. Leatherman - a.k.a. "Dr. Beach" - it's San Diego's Coronado Beach. The 300-yard-wide, 1.5-mile-long stretch of silvery sand fronts the red-roofed Hotel del Coronado, a National Historic Landmark where Marilyn Monroe cavorted in the 1959 classic Some Like it Hot.

I always liked the beach on Coronado during my time in San Diego('77-'04)... Not a whole lot of riff raff hanging around. Very nice and generally peaceful.

An ambitious fundraising goal to support San Diego's "Kissing Statue" was met just in time to see the statue off during the Memorial Day weekend.

The famous statue of two Navy sweethearts kissing on the San Diego waterfront will now be forever preserved in bronze, with a price tag of about $1 million, the USS Midway Museum's officials announced Saturday morning.

It looks very nice building, and more if it will be a library, I love San Diego, I keep saying it is simply the finest city and the most beautiful of the United States. The center is very nice better than downtown Los Angeles.

An entirely new home for San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Sumatran tigers could open by 2014, thanks to the park's largest pledge ever of $9 million.

Park officials announced Friday that the planned $19.5 million Tiger Trail attraction is assured of the donation as long as an additional $2 million is raised by the end of the year.

A couple who has chosen to remain anonymous pledged to contribute $9 for every $2 in donations to finance the new attraction, designed in part to draw attention to the dwindling Sumatran tiger population. The gift, at most, would be $9 million if the park succeeds in attracting $2 million in donations.

The company I work for is building a new 13-story tower to consolidate all of our people from 7 buildings into one. It'll be located at the La Jolla Commons in UTC, and will be a twin of the existing building that was completed in 2007.

Groundbreaking occurred in April, and the building should be completed by 2014.

Thanks for the news, Chapelo. It's great to see some construction going on.

Here's an article that suggests a builder could start construction on this high-rise 41-story downtown condo building in 2013. It would be built at the southeast corner of Broadway and Pacific Highway. I think that is kiddy-corner from the Santa Fe Station. They are saying there will be a contest to name the building. Any thoughts on a good name?

I think you are thinking of the correct spot. If you type "951 Pacific Highway" into Google Maps, you'll see the property. That's just an arbitrary address for that side of the block.

The building is proposed to be built just accross E Street and to the north of Office Depot, on the block bound by Broadway to the north, Pacific Highway to the west, E Street to the south, and the RR/Trolley tracks to the east (and the Electra condos to the east of the tracks).

That looks great! Too bad it isnt just a smidge taller for skyline purposes. But it's a great design. Bosa just started here in Seattle on a twin tower condo project- they're certainly keeping busy!

This building accross 14th Street from the downtown Albertsens now has some structure that reaches a full story above ground.

Convention Center Expansion Approved, Legal Hurdles Remain

The San Diego City Council approved final financing and further design work Monday for the $520 million convention center expansion, even as it awaits the outcome of a pending lawsuit.

The council voted 6-1 with David Alvarez opposed to setting up the bonds, repayments, additional design work and other details aimed at getting the third phase of the 23-year-old center on downtown's South Embarcadero opened by the end of 2016.

But City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said it is unlikely the legality of the financing approach -- charging hotels up to 3 percent in additional room taxes -- can be settled by February. The city filed a "validation" lawsuit to get judicial buyoff on the plan, since the hoteliers would provide the bulk of the financing.

"Add in appeals and it could be somewhat longer, possibly a lot longer," Goldsmith said. "but there's a possibility to resolve it earlier, and we'll do our very best."

The city, as well as the hotel industry, have been pressing to expand the convention center to accommodate more and bigger meetings and keep San Diego competitive with other convention cities. Comic-Con International, the city's largest, is considering moving to a different city if the center isn't expanded.

I saw fences around the sites for these two developments. Hopefully this means they are moving forward.
