I heard that there's a new cricket stadium being planned on OMR, is that true?
I also read about that in brochure of a real estate project on OMR, the map in that said about a stadium, near SSN college.

new stadium means jolly! one Saurashtrian or Sethji wedding is for sure. It would be surely colorful.

But unfortunately they dropped it.

VB Chandraseksar (ex Indian team) who runs the VB cricket academy, has a cricket coaching stadium "the Nest" on the Kelambakkam - Vandalur road. Had taken my kid for matches there some 5 years back.

My Pre University Classmate. He was not offered a seat in Guindy Engg College (Anna University) and so he had to join Coimbatore PSG (I think).

But he was almost staying in Chennai as he was playing the top league matches at Chennai.

VB Chandrasekhar.. he was liked by many in my friends circle, for his "gethu" to open the batting without Helmet in couple of international matches against Kiwis..
He was known for his arrogance of stroke play during his times and matched Kris Srikkanth or even overshadowed him in many of the Ranji matches. We liked VenkataRamana too..

No Olympic cheer for Tamil Nadu

Only three athletes from the state have qualified for the greatest sports show on earth and one of them, Rushmi Chakravarthy, should be grateful to the International Tennis Federation’s generosity for getting a wild card in doubles with Sania Mirza.
The other two, hockey goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh and triple-jumper Renjith Maheswary, were raised in Kerala before jobs with IOB and Southern Railway brought them to Chennai. Tamil Nadu’s Olympic cupboard is so bare that they may have to stake claims to Navy man Sanjeev Rajput if the rifle shooter wins a medal at London. Rajput is a native of Haryana but he is posted at Coimbatore
What are the reasons for the state’s Olympic misery? A combination of factors has rendered Tamil Nadu cheerleaders at the grandest sporting party.
Those who follow sports even casually will know the ‘stellar’ role played by associations in promoting their disciplines. The story of state federations in recent years makes for a depressing reading. Vision is something beyond many bodies that will, on the other hand, win Olympic gold in politicking and infighting.
Politics rule hockey, football and basketball
Quote:
The SDAT’s stock answer is inaction on the part of associations concerned. Everybody knows that the associations are a stumbling block to the development of sports in this country. They are part of the problem, not a solution.
Many sports bodies don’t want to see their athletes become rich and famous. Why should the SDAT wait for a word from the associations when it can ascertain the performances of Tamil Nadu athletes on its own and give them their due?
Why should Prem wait so long to meet the chief minister who has an abiding love for sports? Is it not the duty of the SDAT to bring his achievement to the CM’s notice?
The Tamil Nadu football team reached the final of the Santosh Trophy in May this year after four decades and there is no news yet on the cash prizes stipulated in the government order.
If the sports-loving chief minister comes to know the lack of playgrounds for football in the city, she may order remedial action immediately. It was Ms J. Jayalalithaa who constructed Chennai’s Nehru Stadium in a record time.
Indian Olympic hockey team goalkeeper Sreejesh hasn’t got a single rupee from Tamil Nadu for his achievements in recent times, even though he has been representing the state since 2006. He is hurt that there is no action on his petition to the SDAT.

Tamil Nadu won only one gold at the 2010 National Games.
BTW, I didn't see a thread for sports in TN forum while looking to post this piece. There is a thread for attu nadigargal...why not sports? Aren't people outside chennai interested in sports anymore!?

folks i want to share some experiences of my recent Georgian trip in a small town east facing the black sea andabout 370 kms from Tbilisi.

* They have a chess and draughts school named Nana Alexandria
* even that little town has good wide roads and well planned city landscapes and greenary.
* The waterbodies are so beautiful. They fish in a lake that has potable clear water and the resort near it does not dump their waste into the lake. Brunettes and blondes with two pieces come to fish! (and it looks so normal there)
* They are non-english speaking Europeans who love other country visitors and i had great time socializing with them. Some even wanted me to date their nieces or cousins but when i said in india we believe in one man one woman they were surprised that even in these times there are traditional people. They asked me a funny question if i was married just once i laughed out loud.
* they dont appreciate people eating with hands and they have vodka chilled in fridge and have a few shots on the rocks when they dine

Na Zdharovi meaning cheers in Russian and Czech or Slovakia or many other countries dont work there. They say Gaumarjooz to greet or to say cheers.

They dont like it if u say you use your left hand to wash your thing after toilet (when asked i told a guy honestly and he cringed. I therefore will lie from the next time saying it is toilet paper)

* Women and children stare at me - for i am the only brown balloon in those parts. They haven't seen a lot of non-whites.

* I beat a strong rated player from Azerbaijan in 23 moves and they became my fans and made it a point to watch me play daily

* their currency is Lari ($0.8=1 Lari) and tetri is their change. (Like cents)

* They use right handed drives (left side steering and are like Americans riding in right side of the road)

* Vodka is so cheap and is much better than Absolut vodka available in duty free shops. (one full vodka is about 18 laris compared to about 40 laris for whiskeys or brandy's.

* most women wear almost no makeup except for their shampoo smell but look so hot as compared to artificial beauties in hollywood bathed in make up.

* you could bargain in a roadside veggitable market (very similar to india and they use bazaar for the veggie market, sapoon for soap and hindi it is saboon!). i mean to say many cultural similarities.

Former medallist working at brick kiln
by FP Sports Jul 24, 2012

It has been found out that Santhi Soundarajan, who won a silver medal in the 800m at the Asian Games in Doha in 2006, is now working as a daily wager in a brick factory.

A Times of India report says that after failing her gender test and being stripped of her medal, Santhi is now engaging in menial labour for eight hours a day and is paid Rs 200 per day.

There have been athletes who have failed gender tests before— with the most high profile case being Caster Semenya of South Africa. But things were different with her. She was supported by her whole nation and has been named the flag bearer of the country at the London Games after the International Association of Athletics Federations revoked her ban.

Santhi won a medal at the Asian Games in 2006.
Santhi has had no such luck. After being banned from participating at any level by the Athletics Federation of India, she just vanished.

It is hard to believe that the athlete is now toiling away at a brick kiln.

After the immediate erasing of her records, Santhi also attempted suicide. Considering that she had lost all hope and was humiliated in public, it was not a surprise.

What is even more surprising is that her parents are also working at the same place, which is run by her uncle. Their collective wages support a family of six.

Santhi made a pretty good coach before her current job. Athletes trained by her won medals at national meets and the Chennai marathon, but the Tamil Nadu government refused to confirm her employment— forcing Santhi to look for something else. This coach’s job paid her a monthly Rs 5000.

Without any records of being an athlete (everything was taken from her after she failed the gender test), she cannot apply for the NIS diploma course that would give her better job options. On top of that lies the constant fear of her having to declare her gender.

Santhi had also approached the district administration for a job. But this report quoted her as saying, “I met the district collector and told him that I was even ready to work as a peon. He wasn’t bothered. He said since I wasn’t registered with the employment bureau, I didn’t stand a chance. I told him about my feats as an athlete. I pleaded with him to consider my family’s plight and give me a job on compassionate grounds. My plea fell on deaf ears,” she said.

She was also denied permission to meet M Karunanidhi (then CM) and Jayalalitha (current CM). The prize money she received from Karunanidhi has already been used to faciliate her siblings’ education and marriages.

With the International Olympics Committee thinking about better methods of testing athletes if they come under the scanner for gender verification, Santhi could stand a chance of representing the country. But to survive till then, a job is absolutely necessary.

Giant chess board for children planned at Marina

Rs. 4.84 crore approved for makeover of city’s beachfront; shops to be relocated, sands to be cleaned

Quote:
The Marina Beach is in for another makeover – this time, the space surrounding the statues, the children’s play area and the bus terminus is being spruced up. The Chennai Corporation Council, which met on Wednesday, approved an estimate of Rs. 4.84 crore for the works that include installation of high mast lamps and police watch towers.

Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy said that in the next stage, tenders would be floated after which it would be a matter of a month or so for work to commence. “The space around each of the statues will be developed based on a particular characteristic. There would be a short description in granite about the personality so that beach-goers also gain some knowledge,” he said. The design has been proposed by Alwarpet-based landscape architect K. Raghuraman.

The children’s play area will be the subject of special focus. Among other things, it would have a giant chess board where you can play and an ‘interactive’ fountain where the water will gush up when you clap your hands. On the western side of the road, the urban design pattern (the cream coloured pillars with a black insignia inside that can be seen on the compound walls) would be raised from beneath.

The bus terminus at Anna memorial will get a new design to complete the wave concept. This form will be achieved through tensile steel structures. The Corporation, which is in the process of enumerating the shops on the sand, has plans to regulate them. The shops will be relocated to specific locations on the sand at a cost of Rs.4.12 crore.

Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan told The Hindu that two rows of shops would come up near the MGR and Anna memorials, one row behind Kannagi statue, two rows behind Gandhi statue and another near the light house. “We will permit shops only at these spots. The other stretches would be free of hawkers and any kind of litter. We are interested in regulating the shops and ensuring that visitors to the beach have a good experience,” he said. Once the shops are in place, cleaning of sand would be intensified and the quality of the sand would be improved.

Will be happy if the facelifted beach looks half as good as the render.
