I mean, Orlando was so close with the HSR proposal; GOAA would've built the intermodal center at OIA and Sunrail would've linked to it right away thru the spur at Taft. It would've been glorious.

All is not lost, though.

Sunrail is still being built; station at SLR initially.

Then, the FEC people with the intercity rail proposal from Miami to Orlando (initially), if they link it with OIA, then they will link it (or will have to) with a potential intermodal center at OIA as before.

Also, the Maglev people trying to build a line from OIA to OCCC to Disney will/might somehow be involved as well.

Altogether, this could get Orlando going transit-wise.

I also took the Intercity rail to Otterlo to go to that museum out there. It connected with a central bus system (much like Lynx Central). We then took the bus to the destination. That type of switching systems is very doable here.

There are actually a lot of mass transit plans in the works in Orlando. I recently did a entry on a summary of all the ones I know of.

Mass Transit Plans and Proposals Part 1

Maglev (I doubt this will happen, company has long history of defunct proposals)
High Speed Train (2014, or maybe 2018, this will ramp back up, all the plans are still there just collecting dust for the being)
All Aboard Florida (I suspect this and HSR will become a private public partnership in the end)
Cocoa Maglev (Plans dropped)
OIA MultiModal Hub (Plans still on the books as part of future OIA expansion)
Lake Nona Transit Stop (Routes in place, IMO will happen in the next 5-10 years)
Gondolas (downtown to OIA, plans seem forgotten about )
Double Deck Semoran Blvd (Business owners along road successful blocked this plan)

Mass Transit Plans and Proposals Part 2

Lymmo (Expansion north to Florida Hospital, Mills Park, and College Park. Expansion south to ORMC, SoDo, and Orange/Michigan)
Bus Rapid Transit (plans call form BRT lanes along Kirkman, JYP to OIA, Colonial Drive from West Oaks Mall to Alafaya. Hwy 192 may also get BRT or Light Rail along it. Disney has transit plans cutting through the resorts, may be monorail, BRT, LRT, or even a PRT system) I wish we could get a Dual Mode vehicle that runs like a bus and a rail car, that way it could be on the ground where we have space and above the road where we don't.
North South Light Rail (Going from Altamonte, through downtown, to I-Drive)
Orange Blossom Express (LRT connecting north Lake County to downtown Orlando)
Water Taxis (Lake Dora, Lake Monroe)

Even if just a few of these plans see the light of day it will make Orlando's transit much nicer and give it a true big city feel.

Well obviously those yes, but I meant the obvious MAJOR game changers for Orlando, I don't see them happening. I want them too but our leaders are just not into building for the future as they need to be. Maglev won't get approved although I'd love to see it. FEC thing won't come to fruition and OBX was supposed to be up before SuNRail yet it's doing a year long study.

Lymmo is the only Transportation thats actually happening as of now. SunRail as well but I think SunRail will be set back even further than the date it has targeted now.

If Sunrail Phases I & II get done, OBX gets developed, Maglev gets built, and FECI gets up and running with an intermodal center at OIA, then I will be very impressed with Orlando. I'm impressed now, but, man oh man...

Branson was rumored to be in talks with Fdot after deuche rejected the HSR funds. I wonder if he'll get renewed interest after he sees the current proposals out there, ala the potential market for that type of system.

I knew there was something about the spelling of that word...

I think we all know why he canceled it, and it had nothing to do with the best interests of the State of Fla; it had more to do with the State of the GOP.

Ouch, I'm not going to get involved in some political debate but all I'll say is I can't wait to 2014 and 'Go Dyer'. Actually I doubt Dyer will run himself but he'll endorse someone who will run and will win against Scott.

And that platform will be HSR, Healthcare, and Education. Scott will focus on tax cuts, jobs creation, and the environment but will lose due to Hispanic voters and city voters. I think it's time Orlando realizes it's second only to Miami in terms of impacting state and even some national votes. This November will key for Orlando to truly show what a big city it is. Hold on because we just jumped into the deep end.

Well, that's partly true. But its always been about politics. it's really the I-4 corridor which is actually the swing portion of the state now. More people live along the I-4 corridor than in SoFla. THis is why the pres. wanted to build the HSR between Orlando and Tampa. And this is why the GOP shot it down, to kill his plan. its not a political opinion meant to incite; its a fact (this place is too pc). just b/c the replicant stated other reasons for scrapping it doesn't mean squat. It passed several levels of approval and as soon as he got in, he scrapped it immediately knowing the shuttle program was at an end along with so many jobs in Brevard.

And, FYI, he almost shot down Sunrail too. you all don't know the behind the scenes discussions that went on with that project; lots of quid pro quo dealings going on; in essence, holding the project as a major bargaining chip, the douche. we are damn lucky that Sunrail's major proponent was from the same party, otherwise, fahgetaboutit!

The very fact that a private company is now willing to build it means there actually was some credence to the idea that intercity rail in Florida will turn a profit and operationally it would have supported itself. Now, the argument of whether public money should be spent is a completely different one.

However:
* Florida is/has been a donor state for transit/highway funds for a long time, so it actually was our money that we turned down and gave away.
* The line would have turned a profit, so now a private entity will get that profit rather than the state (IE, the people). Plus, if the state moves forward with the FEC plan we will actually be loosing money since we will be giving them ROW in areas of the state.
