July's edition of Elle Decoration is running a reader offer to stay in one of seventeen country house hotels. One of them is the New Hall Hotel and Spa in Birmingham. The main image they use is of New Hall, and it looks fantastic! A great alternative portrayal of what Birmingham is like.

Anglo Holt brings its hotel building skills to the Jewellery Quarter
13th June 2012

WEST Bromwich-based construction company Anglo Holt has begun converting a former textile factory into a £6.4 m Hampton by Hilton hotel in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The 109-bedroom hotel, at Constitution Hill in Hockley, is due to be completed in May 2013. Anglo Holt is building the hotel for its client Mere Park.

Part of the listed façade of the existing building will be retained while the remainder of the existing factory will be demolished. The site’s boundaries include the Metro tram line to two elevations, a main road to the front, and a Grade II listed pub.

Andy Elwell, managing director at Anglo Holt, said: “It is another piece in the jigsaw of the regeneration of one of the most important parts of the city centre.

“Once again it demonstrates that clients value highly the experience and expertise Anglo Holt has gained in the hotel sector over many years."

Anglo Holt has an annual turnover in excess of £50m and employs around 100 people.

Certainly looks like it from the picture, be nice if they turned it back into a classy pub, to slowly regenerate this street, though its still operating as an off licence at the moment??

Premier Inn proposed for Dudley

Last updated: 19th Jun 2012 at 08:17am

Birmingham-based commercial property developer Stoford has submitted a planning application for a 63-bedroom Premier Inn hotel in the Black Country.

The proposals for the project in the Castlegate Business Park in Dudley will now await approval from Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Stoford has applied to build the Premier Inn hotel and restaurant with car parking at the business park off the Birmingham Road on land owned by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Depending on planning permission being granted by Dudley Council, Stoford plans to start work on site this autumn with completion set for late 2013.

About 25 new jobs are expected to be created at the hotel on opening, with further employment opportunities during the year-long construction phase for the scheme.

"Our plans reinforce our long-standing commitment to the Black Country that has seen us deliver a number of major schemes," Stoford director Matt Burgin said.

"This latest investment will likewise help to create new jobs, support local businesses and boost tourism."

John Bates, head of acquisitions for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants in the UK and Ireland, added: "Premier Inn is expanding aggressively across the UK as we keep up with strong demand for our high-quality, affordable product and search out new exciting locations for our customers.

"Castlegate Business Park is an ideal location for a new Premier Inn in the Black Country, with great road access and plentiful restaurants and entertainment nearby for our customers."

Stoford submits Premier Inn plan

Birmingham-based commercial property developer Stoford has submitted a planning application for a 63-bedroom Premier Inn hotel in Lenny Henry's home town of Dudley, West Midlands.

Stoford has applied to build the Premier Inn hotel and restaurant with car parking at the Castlegate business park off the Birmingham Road on land owned by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Subject to planning permission, Stoford plans to start work on site this autumn, with completion set for autumn 2013.

John Bates, head of acquisitions - UK and Ireland for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: "Castlegate business park is an ideal location for a new Premier Inn in the Black Country, with great road access and plentiful restaurants and entertainment nearby for our customers. It really is a prime site and our deal with Stoford takes us one step closer to achieving our target of increasing the 47,000 Premier Inn bedrooms currently to 65,000 in 2016."

None of the elevations have given me much confidence with that proposal.... In fact, I'm really hating the look of it. Vast swathes of white render. The overall form and size of the building completely envelopes and dominates the Whitmore Warehouse. The Warehouse starts to look less like a centrepiece and more like a barrier in the development. It's going to be completely overshadowed and the area around it completely unutilised.

I had hope for Newhall Square but this has blown it completely out the water.

This is the kind of place where render isn't needed and re-conditioned bricks should be the finish - that old building remaining in the centre should be used as a catalyst for the design in the square.
Edit - yes Erebus, the Whitmore Warehouse, sorry I didn't read all your post before writing!

While we've been so preoccupied with the city centre did anyone notice this?

After years of laying dormant, someone actually bought it to use as a hotel. I thought it was being refurbed into offices. I contemplated getting married at the church since i lived in the parish when I was little.

Castle Bromwich Hall Hotel

The Hotel

Constructed in the 16th century and stylishly brought up to high 17th century standards with a wealth of additions, this Grade I listed building whisks guests back in time with exposed wooden floors, intricate stone carvings, and roaring log fires. Rich reds and ancient oaks merge with modern fixtures in the ambient Great Hall Restaurant where fine cuisine is served, while the spacious reception and bar provide a quiet atmosphere in which to relax.

The Gardens

Ten acres of beautifully sculpted baroque gardens have been lovingly restored to faithfully represent their history. The sprawling lawns and interesting nooks hold plenty to explore, including the Upper and Lower Wilderness where lush trees tower overhead, Lady Bridgeman’s Garden where seasonal colours blossom, and The Maze where pairs can get lost among the natural splendour.

Is there anyone out there with information on why Calthorpe's Edgbaston Mill Hilton by Doubetree as simply failed to materialise??
This impressive scheme sitting right opposite the new Edgbaston Cricket Ground as been given continual start dates for 3 years now and simply failed to materilise. A sure fire winner of a scheme yet Calthorpe of all people can't make it happen, would so much compliment the new progress on the Cricket Ground and the scheme adjacent to it, very dissappointing..

Chateau and town hotel sold
Quote:
ICONIC town buildings which have been on the market for nearly three years have been sold.
The landmark Chateau Impney Hotel and The Raven Hotel at Droitwich have been sold for an undisclosed sum according to receivers BDO LLP.
Both were sold to Birmingham-based Greyfort Properties Ltd on Wednesday, July 4.
The chateau’s current management, originally brought in by the receivers, has been re-employed along with the existing staff to run the premises.
There are no immediate plans to reopen The Raven Hotel, in St Andrew’s Street according to the new owners.
The sale, with the business marketed as a going concern, has long been anticipated after the receivers were appointed in November 2009.
Kim Rayment, BDO business restructuring partner, said: "I am delighted 44 jobs at the Chateau Impney have been saved with the transfer of staff, and the business can now move forward.
“The sale of The Impney Group Hotels has ensured the chateau continues to trade as a hotel and will remain an important local landmark in Droitwich.
“Furthermore, the sale of The Raven Hotel allows this important local site to be developed.”
Your Worcester News approached the new owners for a statement, with a spokesman saying it was “early days” without wishing to comment further at this stage.
