Vypeen dump yard may become a park
Quote:
A dumpyard in Vypeen might soon be converted into a park for the elderly. The proposal to convert the wasteland into a park is an idea that was mooted as part of the second phase of development of Fort Vypeen, under the Vypeen renovation project by Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organization (Kitco) and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).

Fort Vypeen is the area surrounding the 400-year-old Our Lady of Hope Church. "The church and the people here have been asking Kochi corporation to clean the mess in this part of Vypeen. This being a locale close to the historic church, we are happy with the new proposal," said Fr Mathew Puthiyath, church administrator. "We want to provide more free space and an elderly-friendly place in the city. The Vypeen beach, which is 200 metres off the Goshree Bridge, will provide the much-needed open space," said legislator Dominic Presentation. An initial investment of Rs 2.37 crore has been earmarked for its development.

Meanwhile, the Fort Vypeen project facing Fort Kochi beach and the backwaters will be landscaped with the help of professor Ramaswamy, architect at the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach). The first phase includes beautification of the church, the walkway around it, a children's park connecting the beach and the main road, a tourist info-centre and public toilets near Kinco jetty.

"The second phase of development will see the pathways extending from the church to the east -side till Vypeen Jhankar jetty. The present position of the church's grotto will also be shifted in the coming months, so that the church gets better access," Dominic said. The project will be inaugurated by A P Anil Kumar, minister for tourism, on July 6.
The proposal to convert the wasteland into an elderlies' park is an idea that was mooted as part of the second phase of development of Fort Vypeen, under the Vypeen renovation project by Kitco.

Chief minister Oomen Chandy would lay the foundation stone for the city plant expansion of Milma in a function that would be held on Saturday. Milk co-operatives and information and public relation minister K C Joseph would preside over the meeting that would be held in the premises of the Thripunithura plant of Milma.

Once the expansion is completed, the authorities would enhance the total capacity of the plant to 3.5 lakh litres a day. "The project would be implemented at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore," said M T Jayan, chairman, Milma, Ernakulam region.

During expansion, the plant will get facilities, like buildings, delivery docks, processing units and roads. Machines will be installed to homogenize about 20,000 litres of milk in one hour. The authorities also expect to improve the quality of existing products like curd, ghee, ice cream, butter milk, peda, flavoured milk and paneer.

Now, one can fly to Kochi from Madurai

Air India’s inaugural flight between Kochi and Madurai arrived here on Thursday. Twenty passengers, who arrived by the ATR aircraft, were greeted with rosebuds at the airport.

Kochi is the fifth destination to be connected with flight service from Madurai, after Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad and New Delhi. “This connects two preferred international tourist destinations,” Airport Director K. Sangiah Pandian said. This would be the only flight connecting Madurai with Kerala. “East West Airlines used to operate a service between Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram via Madurai in the 1990s,” Mr. Pandian said.

The service would be available weekly thrice on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. AI9503 Kochi-Madurai flight would leave Kochi at 3.30 p.m. and arrive Madurai at 4.15 p.m. On the return direction, AI9504 Madurai-Kochi flight would take off from Madurai at 4.35 p.m. and land in Kochi at 5.20 p.m.

Air India would also offer through boarding cards for international passengers who fly to Sharjah from Madurai. “However, they will have to undergo customs and immigration clearance at Kochi for the AI 933 (Kochi-Sharjah flight),” Air India Station Manager A. Anil Kumar said. “Though the permitted luggage in the ATR-42 would be only 15 kg per passenger, we will permit an additional five kg for Madurai-Sharjah passengers in the 48-seater flight,” he added.

N. Sriram, a Travel Club member, said that the Madurai-Kochi flight would open international air connectivity to various destinations for tourists and business travellers from the southern districts.

“Besides a good flow of tourists, both domestic and international, the service would also help traders from both sides,” S. Rethinavelu, senior president, Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said.

Lot of trade of food grains, rice and spices take place between Madurai and Kochi/Ernakulam. “This flight will certainly spare traders from the tedious road travel for more than eight hours on the mostly ghat road,” he added.

Passenger happy

For software engineer K. Parthiban, who was on a family tour to Ernakulam, the launching of air service between Kochi and Madurai was a pleasant surprise. A native of Cumbum in Theni district, Mr. Parthiban went to Ernakulam by two trains. “It was a 15-hour journey. But now we flew down in 45 minutes. I found the availability of this flight service while browsing on the net and decided to fly back,” he said.

I still don't understand why Hindu is still reporting the Marine Drive-Varapuzha Ring Road as 3.5 M wide..... Its 30.5 M wide 4 lane road. For 3.5m, its not any ring road, rather a bye-lane.
May be they are mentioning about the walkway

Kochi master plan yet to receive government approval
Quote:
After a long wait the city's metro rail project received central sanction on Tuesday. But the draft master plan, prepared by the department of town and country planning, for the scientific development of Kochi and its neighbourhood is yet to receive the state government's approval. The master plan, which aims to develop Kochi and its surrounding towns as a global city through a scientifically planned development, was submitted to the government for approval by mid-2010, said sources.

However, later the government constituted a joint town planning committee (JTPC) by an order to make their suggestions since master plan covered 16 local bodies in the district. After incorporating the suggestions made by JTPC, the master plan was submitted to the government again for its approval more than a year ago. Sources said then there was no progress on the same.

The master plan is not likely to get thumbs up from the government in the immediate future as the JTPC has suggested the government to use paddy and wetland available for the urban use. However, the government is required to make amendments to the act to enable the use of lands under the category for non-agricultural use. But officials with the department of urban and country planning said the government is yet to take a decision in this regard.

Officials said the potential growth rate is higher outside the Kochi Corporation area and the department drafted the plan after taking into consideration this matter.

"It has given importance for the development of peripheral areas as the core city does not have much potential for development. Also we aim to contain the floating of population from other parts to the city," said an official. It has also given emphasis for mass transport and preservation of places with heritage values.

The master plan prepared covers Kochi Corporation, municipalities including Tripunithura, Kalamassery, Maradu, Thrikkakara, Eloor and Aluva and panchayats such as Vadavukode-Puthencruz, Cheranalloor, Varappuzha, Narakkal, Mulavukadu,Chellanam, Kumbalam, Kumbalangi, Elamkunnapuzha and Kadamakudy.

That masterplan was done like a school project. No wonder it didn't get approved.

Even though I m overjoyed about the centre's nod to Kochi Metro , I had been thinking along a different line for the past couple of days...
Metro is a 5000+ cr project. Even with less than half of that money ,you can construct flyovers at Edappally,Palarivattam,Vyttilla ,Kundannoor and widen Thammanam Pullepady road and connect it to Kochi Bypass....and contruct over bridges at Atlantis & Pachalam....

This would solve 90% of the traffic jams in Kochi...

Isnt Metro an unwanted luxury?
I m not anti-developemnt or being too doubtful...arent all these gimmicks???
Please dont pounce upon me for thinking practically...

You are thinking short term (5 years) and cannot be called practical. If one thinks with a time span of 20-25 years, Metro is a must for Kochi. It will consume about 1/5th of the energy per passenger per km compared to the road systems. Also, it can carry much more passengers in one go. The total running distance from Aluva to Petta is expected to take 50 min., whereas at present Tripunithura to MG Road along could take 2 hours during peak hours.

As a matter of fact, we need BOTH. But unfortunately, Metro is a revenue making investment. Flyovers aren't!!

For the Urban flyovers, I would recommend a cess on building, property and employment taxes levied in the UA, as toll is impractical

I have travelled in namma metro(B'lore) many times. I never find its a luxury thing but realised it is the most effective and efficient public transport. it works well if the same connects many places and integrates othe modes of transport...means proper network. On a lighter side metro rails treats every passenger equals. No business class, No first class, No non-ac, reservation for women, aged etc but it gives proper treatment for disabled. perhaps even better than a travel in a private car.
