sorry about the night lighting..

but this pic is essentially to show how much the road from bhorolu --> kamakhya has changed..
guwahatians would have fond memories of driving or riding alongside trains in this two laned road. now its more widened..

if its okay with everyone, i'd like to take a few moments of solitude alongwith all other forum members to say a prayer for all the families and innocents displaced due to the recent floods..
i always grew up hearing from elders that the bramhaputra takes as much as it gives, but i never thought it could be so serious on this..

for every father struggling to find a home or feed his children, and for every building in guwahati with a room empty for only those who can afford it, i offer my sincerest prayers to our gods to balance this equation..

thanks to all for your time and prayers..

@finalelement
That's a good thought, and amen to that!
At the same time, how I wish our Govt had put a check to the rampant encroachment and bastardization(pardon my language) of our lovely hills long ago. It appears even de-silting drains would not be enough now..sigh

@sudden

exact same thoughts brother, exact same thoughts..
actually we need a proper, well thought out and comprehensive housing policy, especially for immigrants and people from outside guwahati.. that way growth can be better overseen, and crime and city development can be regulated.
hopefully we'll get one after the new GDMA laws

@finalelement

thanks again for nice updates

but u r making me crazy to fly down to guwahati now itself.

missing it a lot.

I am eagerly waiting for that historic day, when first major IT company will commence their operations from guwahati. This will further boost real estate development. IT has cahnged bangalore forever. i would say 80% of engineers from assam working in bangalore and other indian cities would love to come back to guwahati.

I just can not stop appreciating guwahati and beauty of assam to my non assamese friends and colleagues.

@ all
any updates on IT park to come up near airport . it will be build by infinity group. it will have 2 million or 20 lakhs sq. ft of built up area.

@sunny

its true IT has great potential. but the reality is a little different for us brother.. i used to think like you too..
but let me give you a reason why i think guwahati can do much, much better than just IT.

1. see guwahati is strategically placed at a point where realty and trade meet at crossroads..
just think of the possibilites when the trans asian highway, and even if every state of the northeast gets connected.
trade will increase hundred fold. much more than what just IT can promise us..

2. sunny i dont mean to disrespect you in any way bro, but yr concentrating on IT so much that yr forgetting the father of IT, the service-sector.. that is a huge market that guwahati is strongly poised to conquer. while its true that IT is needed as the backbone, but when you come back here, you'll be glad to know, guwahati (private companies specially) have just woken up to the fact that bhuwaneshwar is slowly gaining the advantage, and they are trying hard to not let that happen completely..

sometimes, retail and corressponding services push a city much beyond its original expectations.. case in point: Dubai, Vegas, Singapore and many more

so just imagine brother, when the entire northeast gets connected, as by 2015-16 eventually, just imagine the service and retail revolution this city can have.. its already started, and what we have now, is just a teaser for the movie..

@ finalelement

you are very much correct. IT MNCs should not be the backbone of Guwahati.

i would like to tell you one of the biggest adavantage of these IT companies.
IT companies are very much dependent of highly skilled man power. and most of these guys come under upper middle class, if not rich.
for example if a big IT park of around 1.2 million sq. ft comes up in guwahati, it will accomodate over 20,000 software engineers, managers etc. same thing exists in other service sectors too like FMGC, banking , financial, retail and hospitality sectors. but these sectors do not employ people in mass.
Once IT companies come up, there will be huge demand for office space, retail and commercial space . besides you know these IT companies will further propel demand for luxury category hotel rooms, which means there will be opportunity for more number of luxury hotel brands to open their shop in guwahati. and you know, based on only tourism sector, guwahati is going to have around 8 to 9 luxury category hotels(includes four star category hotels).

Besides this, equal number of manufacturing, food processing, pharma and biotechnology companies should be present in guwahati as it offers very huge opportunities in these sectors.

but whatever may be the outcome, my heart says guwahti will soon compete with manjor metros in next couple of decades. LOOK EAST policy will be the GAME Changer.

Hope that Guwahati will become the next Bangalore/Hyderabad/Pune. I had my eyes on Agra (given Yamuna Expressway/proposed new airport), Jaipur (Metro+other developments), Kochi (same as Jaipur) as cities to watch out for but now I think I have keep an eye on Guwahati as well. The only thing is I feel Union government isn't that proactive in fostering development in the North-East. Ideally, Guwahati can be a hub not just for NE, but Bangladesh, Burma, NE, West Bengal, Orissa and as far away as Thailand and Vietnamese companies can invest in Guwahati as it is the biggest city in the North East. Assam government will have to go all out on its own to develop high-quality infrastructure. Looking forward to that.

This the G S Road, where BRTS(Bus Rapid Transit System) will come up, which will be little more than 10Km in first phase.
in the picture we can see that if roadside parking is banned, there will be enough space to convert GS road into a 10 lane highway. besides, they should construct underground storm water drainage system to accommodate BRTS.

@all

Does anyone have information if process for implementing BRTS has already started. because, i could see white dotted lines on either side of the divider.

Guwahati monorail project approved

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh announced that the ambitious project of monorail system in Guwahati will be implemented in the 12th Five Year Plan.

The monorail project in Guwahati will be implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Under the scheme eleven cities of the country will get metro rail and eighteen cities will get monorail.

The monorail is a single rail serving as a track for the transport vehicle and the rail though elevated in most cases can also run at grade, below grade or in subway tunnels. The transport vehicle is either suspended from or move on the single rail and is considered the best option for Guwahati to ease out its traffic woes. Each monorail can carry 1,000 passengers at a time and is the one of the safest and dependable transport system.

I think these are a must for any Tier II city/Guwhati:

1. Efficient bus services
2. MRTS=Metro or Mono
3. Convention+Exhibition centre
4. AIIMS like govt hospital to give poor people good treatment
5. Ring Road for planning development on outskirts
6. Libraries
7. Good roads/water/electricity

I think Assam govt is working on many of these.

yes, they are trying their best to make guwahati a pleasant place to stay. Although public cooperation and discipline are very much required for making guwahati a beautiful place.

i will elaborate in the next post
