![]() To Niljee for speaking out the fact, which I fully agree. ![]() Raj, ja bolechis bhai. Auto is the equivalent of Cabs in "hITECH CITY" or for that matter in Chennai, Hyd etc. Transport network or connectivity is much better in Kolkata than all those cities, and it will get better with the advent of the web of metro network. I find only Mumbai to have the most versatile & penetrating transport system.

As far as autos in Bang, its quite true but of late, since fares were hiked, I am finding it quite easy to get autos by metre. Yesterday I paid Rs 40 for a 3.5 km distance. I think thats pretty reasonable. BMTC old buses do write destinations in Kannada but new buses have both Kannada and English. While BMTC fares are higher, I find the newer buses of BMTC very good and don't mind paying higher fares.

Railings and dividers are being removed at several roads and replaced with concrete tiles as shown in the pics above. The problem is with encroachments which spoils the beauty.

Median divider U/C in PAS Rd. Pic in front of SC Mall
![]() Railings have been/are being replaced with Beautified & Concrete Median dividers on J L Nehru Road, Sarat Bose Road, R B Connector, Bhawanipore (ATM Road), PAS Road at present. More roads will follow. The sidewalks of Southern Avenue & Alipore Road are stunningly beautiful these days. The pics posted by Shubhendu are none of core city areas, mostly out of the city parts or highways. But New Town MAR is having such beautified medians as posted by BT.

Same with Mayawati. If you look at the Lucknow thread, a lot of good work has been done. But the media is more obssessed with elephants than some of the spectacular work that has been done. I agree though that Didi or West Bengal doesn't have a good publicity setup in place. That is common in all left wing democratic set ups. They are always weeping more and praising less. In right wing set ups and dictatorial commie set ups the publicity machine is better oiled |

I must appreciate Didi for completing it in six months. But then i have to compare the quality of work done in both state. And i think quality does matter always. No matter it might take some time but on the long run it would earn a good revenue. A finished & good work always better than some half done/ sub standard work. And Modi wasn't only doing beautification project. Modi govt. almost covered maximum nalas with solar panels, resulting more alternate energy. At the same time no more ugly nalas in the city. What an optimum utilization of sources along with beauty. And coming to Lucknow. If u spent days recently over there u can only observe heads of hatis elsewhere. Did you visit Mayawati Park in Noida? In each & every place u can understand how common people's money being wasted over there. Urgency is one thing & wastage is another. We shouldn't mix it up. Though Didi know it better. That's why i see less wastage in kolkata rather Lucknow, Noida & Noida Extn. The only thing is we can wait for long. We never mind for beautification being done in states. But more painting job is working like an eyesore. We wanted a clean & green city. But we need quality work also from our beloved CM. Don't we? That's why we all are criticizing here. The comparison with other cities coming again & again only for that reason. Don't take it otherwise. We can surely compare all these & come up with a better state-of-art ark. There's no harm in ths.... We all love our kolkata very mcuh. That's why people are coming up with huge expectations. The comparison with Sabarmati River Front is just for showing up the quality of work. I'll of course feel better if someday we can beat Modi govt. Here people are staying in different corners of country. And people staying outside bengal always think, Alas! If it was there in Kolkata I would probably enjoy from the bottom of my heart .... We don't mind waiting for an another year (Whereas we were sleeping in last 34 years). But what we need is a good quality work & that's the responsibility of our CM.

With a cash strapped and pro-poor govt, the beautification drive, especially on the riverfront is commendable. While Sabarmati project gave a more modern and sleek outlook, the WB govt has tried to project the riverfront as a part of the existing heritage. The heritage look projects it as if the beautified stretch has existed for long and blends with the architecture and heritage of the city. Lets see how the whole project comes up, with the Kolkata Eye, Kolkata gate, and other projects.

today morning while going thru the New Town, seen the beautified medians there.Good work is being done...saplings have grown enough & flowers have also bloomed....LOOKS GOOD.
In some areas lack of proper maintenance is clearly visible(this whole project should be outsourced to qualified parties who can take proper care of the median strips) |

i don't want to compare the Savarmati riverfront beautification Project with our own Hooghly riverfront beautification project.
Our riverfront beautification Project has been a great success...and it's looking GRAND....the pavements, seating & lighting arrangement all are GOOD. But,question always arises when it comes to MAINTENANCE....should we be able to properly maintain this beauty? i don't have any answers....my expert friends in this forum may have.. |

Kolkata river front beautification project is not well planned like Sabarmati River Front beautification project.Kolkata river front project is some kind of khichuri,it is nor like Victorian style nor Modern style, benches are like 'yamraj ka kursi',lights are styled like pandal decoration light, paver blocks are modern style, railing are Victorian style. But still it is better than nothing.:p
