Flyover planned on highway in Mandya

Quote:
The State government has dropped the proposal to construct a bypass to reduce traffic congestion on the Bangalore-Mysore highway and decided to construct a flyover instead.

The estimated cost of constructing the flyover, between Shivanahalli and Acetate Factory junction on the highway, was Rs. 6.5 crore. The project would be implemented on a public-private partnership basis.

Mandya Urban Development Authority chairman Basave Gowda told presspersons here on Monday that the authority had prepared a detailed report on the flyover project and forwarded it to the Department of Housing and Urban Development for approval.

Mr. Gowda told The Hindu later, “We conducted a meeting of officials of various departments a few weeks ago and finalised the project report.”

In 2006-07, the authority had planned to construct a bypass in Mandya to ease traffic congestion on the Bangalore-Mysore highway. The project entailed acquiring nearly 100 acres of land and the cost would have come up to nearly Rs. 75 crore.

“We don’t want to acquire fertile land to construct the bypass. Hence, we have decided to construct a flyover without acquiring any land,” he said.

Mandya Urban Development Authority commissioner H.S. Shivaram was present on the occasion.

Project cost estimated at Rs. 6.5 crore

Trees felled for widening Bangalore-Mysore Road

Quote:

"We felled the trees only after obtaining the permission of the Forest Department. The road widening work is going on in full steam" said senior official of BBMP

It took just a few hours. Some of the few remaining trees at Hosaguddahalli on Bangalore-Mysore Road were felled early on Sunday to pave way for widening of the road. By noon, the tree trunks were being cleared.

According to a senior official in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), three trees were felled as they were blocking the proposed widened carriageway. “We felled the trees only after obtaining the permission of the Forest Department. The road widening work is going on in full steam,” the official said.

The official added that the BBMP was confident of completing the road widening work by the end of December. Several deadlines have lapsed without much progress in the widening work taken up on this arterial road.

The delay in the work was attributed to lack of coordination among the various government agencies — Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) and Karnataka Power Transmission Company Ltd (KPTCL).

The official claimed that the BBMP was coordinating with these agencies to ensure that the shifting of utilities is completed at the earliest. “We are all working on the road work and shifting of utilities simultaneously to reduce any further delays,” the official added.

'HUNSUR-GONIKOPPA ROAD WILL BE MADE MOTORABLE BY NOV.'

Quote:
New promise by new Minister Ranjan

Hunsur, July 13- The Hunsur-Thithimathi-Gonikoppa road, which is in a pathetically unmotorable condition, will be made motorable on a priority basis and completed by Nov. 2012, said the newly sworn-in Minister Appachu Ranjan.

Ranjan, who made a brief halt at the Government Guest House here for breakfast this morning while on his way home in Kumboor village near Madapura town in Kodagu, told Star of Mysore that he was aware of the bad condition of the road which linked Kerala and assured to take it up on a priority basis. Ranjan was accompanied by his wife Shyla Appachu.

Heritage site tag for Western Ghats: Regarding yesterday’s Kodagu bundh in opposition to the UNESCO proposal for World Heritage site tag for the Western Ghats, Ranjan said that he was very much against such a move. "The people of Kodagu have been protecting the environment since centuries. The concept of Devakaadu (sacred groves) in Kodagu stands testimony to this. Rest of the world must take a cue from the people of Kodagu to live with nature," said Ranjan.

Regarding the development activities to be taken up in State, Minister Appachu Ranjan said that the biggest challenge before them was to mobilise resources for the Rs. 1,03,000 budget proposals made recently and expressed confidence of attaining the same, though there were only 11 months of term left for the BJP government.

"I am aware that the people’s sentiments are hurt because of the party leaders’ infights and I beg pardon for the same. We will henceforth set aside all such differences and strive for the State’s development," the Minister assured.
