Looks really, really good! And hopefully it will do a lot of good to the area, even if it doesn't fit the surroundings perfectly. It does help create some space, that are "almost" intimate and that's fine by me, since I unfortunately think we are used to much worse.

All in all I am very satisfied with this project so far. Aesthetically I think it is the best we have seen in Cph since the SEB buildings - also by Lundgaard and Tranberg.

While I was up in the Tivoli Hotel (see Trafik and Infrastructure posting) I took a shot of Industriens Hus seen from the rear (Tivoli side).
Think that in just a couple of years, the new Scala building complex will appear to the left in front of the present black gable, and spoil the view of Rigshospitalet.
Also visible will be the new Panum Institute high rise a little further to the left.

Have you seen this awful proposal from the municipality for the future Vesterbros Passage?

While everybody is concentrating on the Scala project, the engineers from the kommune are going to construct this stange asymetric road plan on what could be our mini Champs Elysse with the Freedom statue in the centre at one end.
If ever a street should have a symmetrical plan with a line of trees on both sides of the road, then it is here.
Even worse, DI are contributing to it financially.

I have drawn the central axis line in, to show how off-centre the plan is.

What's so awful about that ?

Every change for Vesterbro Passage is progress compared to now, and the asymmetric design idea will break the long line view. Maybe.

Of most importance will for me be an extension of the pedestrian zones on both sides.

Some piling around the ground zero has been hammered down, so someone must be pretty sure that the Scala plan will be adopted by the politicians at the city hall.
Else the big hole looks like it self

Probably similar photos, but status 03.08.2012 :

Ground works are under-construction by German origin company ZUEBLIN (not too many projects for them here - in Denmark).
I liked the idea of keeping the old facade wall, which is strenghtened with braces now.
Not too big activity at all. As i understand there is no company still for structure, also substructure (probably). ZUEBLIN will perform just soil/excavation works.

See photos :

The good news are it's not any longer demolishing at this site, but in fact real ground engineering. The German based Company Zublin A/S is responsable for the excavation of the 4 floors underground parkinglots. It's 16 meters deep, and will be completed in january 2013.

Sorry to make some noise in here , and unfortunately it's not big stuff, though I fell over this text from one of the lawyer partners at Gorissen & Federspiel which are the coming main tenant in the new Scala.
My points are: now we got the tenats, we got the owners, we got the financeing, we got the local plan, we got the site, we got the architects/contracors, we got the construction permission.

We now only miss the building..

NIELS HEERING. PARTNER OG BESTYRELSESFORMAND I GORRISSEN
FEDERSPIEL

'THE CITY'

This is all guesswork on my side, but based on the following excerpt from the lokalplanforslag:
Sadly, the facade will not survive. I was hoping they would use it somewhere else. I sent an email to Københavns Kommune a few weeks ago and they told me it would be torn down sooner or later. Don't remember the exact answer but the message was clear. I just had a look but couldn't find their response in my inbox. I must have deleted it.

Speaking of facades - What is going to happen to the empty spot on Strøget very close to Rådhuspladsen? They could have tried to fit a part of the facade from scala-grunden in that location. I'm sure the people from "Den gamle by i Aarhus" could have helped them rebuild it

I'm not satisfied with the loss of this facade. It's right there and should be relocated or at least stored for later use. That area has lost some very nice buildings already (Dagmarteatret).

The Strøget site was acquired by Absalon & Co. after first Oskar Jensen Gruppen and then Fionia Bank went bankrupt. It is the company behind Galleri K (previously City Arkaden)and one of the leading commercial space agents im the city centre so expect some pretty generic shopping arcade.

I'd much rather see Manuelle Gautrand's project revived than a transfer of some discarded facade which wouldn't even fit in proportionwise and in terms of lines and window placement. Or some other interesting, modern addition to the site. And I liked the idea of a passageway connecting Frederiksberggade to Vestergade.

Well, almost. The localplan is still not approved, so nothing is certain just yet. The public hearing has ended, so they are probably in the process of evaluating the complaints and suggestions they have received. Fingers crossed...

The protests against this project has been remarkable poor, and grass roots movements or massive attacs from our opponents has more or less been absent so far.

I'm 1000 % certain, that the current design gets approved and adopted by the city council.
