Northumbria Police Marine Division & Police National Diving and Marine School, Jarrow

A South Tyneside area building that some of you may have seen but had much knowledge of but from my pictures taken approx 7 months apart appears to have recent addition of mooring pontoon etc to river frontage

The building for Northumbria Police was designed by the in-house team for the Northumbria Police Authority - Department of Architectural Services, Gateshead Council, Civic Centre, Gateshead

Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty Construction, Wesley Drive, Benton Square Industrial Estate, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Contract awarded November 1993 in value approx £1.5 million with contract period in region of 12 months

Here are some pictures taken by myself ( hosted on Photobucket) ,

on 12 July 2011 from river cruiser,

others on 02/02/12

What the Marine Division & Diving and Marine School is about is about

The Marine Unit, which is based at Viking Park, Jarrow, provides diving and marine support for Northumbria, the neighbouring forces of Durham and Cleveland, and other agencies.

The building is also base for

The following text from Police Oracle Article of 06/04/2004 - text via Northumbria Police

( May be now out of date but does give general view on what the Marine Division is about , duties it carries out , equipment used etc )

The following from http://policeoracle.com/news/Marine-Unit-is-ship-shape_3786.html

Several of the unit's vessels have been upgraded over the winter while it has also taken delivery of a new state-of-the-art £90,000 dive van.

The Marine Unit, which is based at Viking Park, Jarrow, provides diving and marine support for Northumbria, the neighbouring forces of Durham and Cleveland and other agencies.

Insp John Watts, of the Marine Unit, said: " We've spent the winter getting the fleet upgraded and renovated, ready to be fully operational for the Easter weekend when traditionally people tend to start using their boats.

" Our vessels are highly useful in preventing craft misuse. There are rules of the river, in the same way that through the Highway Code there are rules on the road.

" However, we often find some people refuse to follow the rules of the river, while others on jetskis and small boats often don't know them."

Most ports and waterways have byelaws that govern their use. This includes speed restrictions, usually four to six knots and rule of the road, which is generally to keep to the starboard or right hand side of the waterway.

These byelaws are in addition to the worldwide 'International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea'

There is no requirement to pass a test to drive a small boat or personal watercraft, however this does not exempt the user from the rules. There are many training centres in the area where all the required skills can be obtained.

The Marine Unit's work can involve searching waterways and confined spaces such as drains and culverts, as well as routine and high-profile patrols, which can include foot patrols in marinas, parks and docks.

Officers also give specialist crime prevention advice. Boat owners are encouraged to be vigilant and report to the police any suspicious activity around their boatyard or marina.

The Marine Unit incorporates the Northumbria International Diving and Marine School. Established in 1976 it attracts students from a variety of agencies, plus police forces across the UK and abroad, including Oman and Bahrain.

The Marine Unit's upgraded vehicles include:

Police Launch Bede

Bede is an eight-metre long hard hull patrol boat, which has spent the past three-and-a-half years undergoing a major refit.

It came into service in 1986 and during her recent refit was fitted with two new Yanmar diesel engines as well as other equipment. Bede is now upgraded from a Code C river/inshore boat to a Code A seagoing boat.

The vessel can now police the entire coastline of Northumbria to the territorial limits rather than remaining exclusively on rivers and close inshore.

It is expected that Bede will become the Marine Unit's dive platform of choice for river and sea searches.

Insp Watts said: " This refit will increase the operational effectiveness of the unit in all weathers, allowing prolonged patrols. It will be of major benefit to the force as well as commercial and pleasure craft owners."

Police Launch Northumbria

Northumbria, which was built in 1980, is a 45ft Fairy Sword patrol boat originally built for use in the Gulf. It can carry 10 people, has a top speed of 28 knots and is fitted with UHF and VHF radios, depth sounders and a Global Positioning System.
The boat is primarily used to go more than one mile out to sea, but is also used as Command and Control at major events such as the Sunderland Airshow, North Shields WOW festival, New Year's Eve celebrations on Newcastle's Quayside and for closing ports to allow bomb disposal.

Now in full police livery, it has been fitted with a £10,000 radar, new Global Positioning System, autopilot system, Navtex and Airwave radio. Using Navtex, officers can view live weather forecasts on the vessel when previously they had to phone the Met Office.

Police RHIB Scimitar

Scimitar is 7.6metre Halmatic RHIB (rigid hulled inflatable boat) used in high profile operational policing, interception and boarding of craft. Constructed six years ago, it has been completely rebuilt to make it the equivalent of a new boat.

It is fitted with twin 200 horsepower Mariner engines providing a top speed of around 50 knots. It features a new self-righting airbag, radar, lights and console instruments. Scimitar is now also liveried.

Dive Van

Diving operations can include the search for and recovery of property or bodies. The dive van has been custom-built by Kinetic Special Vehicles in Humberside and replaced an existing van, which has been in service since 1987.

Its interior is separated into two areas - wet and dry, which have separate heating and air conditioning systems. The wet area includes hanging rails for dive suits and wet weather gear, storage areas and a changing area.

The dry area is carpeted, can seat 13 people and includes washing facilities and a refreshment area. Outside the van is a hot and cold shower system so dive suits can be cleaned after use.

Inspector Watts added: " It obviously depends on where we are diving as to whether we dive from a boat or use the van as a base to work from.

" The new van is far more modern than its predecessor and has been custom-built so it is a lot more user friendly. It can hold more equipment, which is far easier to get to, and it's also more comfortable for the officers.

" Diving operations are carried out all year round and, in the past, the health and safety of divers due to extremes of temperature have played a major part in planning operations.

" The new dive van means that many health and safety aspects have been addressed and staff have the best available equipment to carry out a demanding job in often difficult conditions.

" The dive van is also fully liveried and bears the name of the Marine Unit while on the old van there was just a Northumbria Police sticker. This helps protect the image of the department and establish its identity at major incidents which can be important when working with other specialist groups.

So now you know what this police division and building is about

Oddly enough I was thrown by Kens photograph as on first glance it appear the statue has a hat on but I now realise that is the light shade

The monument to Sir Charles Mark Palmer was originally located at Palmer Memorial Hospital but was subsequently relocated in 1982 to Tyne Street, Jarrow Riverside Park. This is where this set of photographs were taken in January 2003. The monument now stands in Grange Road, Jarrow following its restoration.

The monument is by the sculptor, Albert Toft and was inaugurated in 1903. The figure of Palmer is in bronze and stands 3metres high. The stone pedestal is 4.5 metres high and 1.76 metres square. It was commissioned by public subscription.

When I photographed the monument is was in poor condition, much vandalised but good to learn that it was later to be renovated and placed in a more public space where such damage will not in future happen.

The details below are taken from the Northumberland At the Opening of the Twentieth Century – Contemporary Biographies (1905).

Right, updated the shieldfield house, king charles and pandon court and wilkinson court entries. Jarrow is contained within the south tyneside council group, which I think is correct.

Thought similar but Norman Dunn is generally an "East Gateshead/ Hebburn / Jarrow/ South Shields" man - his sites are quite impressive with lots of photographs but sometimes difficult to index and locate what you require

Had another look at the website. The latter flats were apparently on School street, which coincidently is the location of the new housing development Ken described in the South Shields, Jarrow and Hebburn thread:

Another look:

Looked pretty grim, all boarded up.

PLANS have been tabled to demolish a Sixties building dubbed a “blot on the landscape” of a town’s historic market square.

Wouldhave House is a three-storey concrete office and shops block in the centre of South Shields.

The building in The Market Place is linked to the Commando and Brigantine pubs, both of which are closed and also to be demolished.

South Tyneside Council’s cabinet is being asked today to agree the demolition of Wouldhave House as well.

The aim is to free a key site for redevelopment as part of regeneration plans for the town centre and the Riverside area.

The whole area will be vacated by late September, with demolition expected to take place by the end of the year.

The views that would be created by demolishing that building are amazing. You don't realise it until you're on the north side of the building, but there's nothing to attract you to that side due to the road so most people would never see it.

Will be nice I'm sure, just hope the town square doesn't end up at the mercy of howling winds coming down the valley. I think of Times Square in Newcastle.

On a more positive note, it will create much more obvious links to the ferry too so may also have a fringe benefit for the Fish Quay on North Shields too.

New images of Shields riverside park from the Gazette website.

By PAUL KELLY
Published on Thursday 16 February 2012 11:22

THE shape of things to come beside the River Tyne at South Shields can today be made public.

The two designs here capture the way an as-yet-unnamed public riverside park – on land to the east of the new BT building at Harton Staithes – is set to be developed if councillors give it the go-ahead on Monday.

The images show people strolling in the park, enjoying refreshments and taking in riverside views.

Had a look at the area when visiting my dentist last week (no fillings ). The BT building is now occupied, but the land in front is being used as a car park. Hopefully just a temporary measure as it doesn't look good.

Allison Arms

Bulldozers begin to flatten derelict pub

Published on Wednesday 18 April 2012 12:30

Quote:

SOUTH Tyneside’s pub trade has been dealt another bitter blow with the demolition of a much-loved watering hole.

The Allison Arms in Straker Street, on Jarrow’s Low Simonside estate, has been closed and boarded up for the last couple of years.

And this week the bulldozers moved in to flatten the boozer, which is believed to be about a century old.

Its demolition was today mourned by Bede ward councillor Tom Hanson, who said: “I’m really sad to see it go.

“It’s a part of the town’s history and generations have drunk there, including myself.

“We’ve lost the Alkali pub along the road, which has been turned into offices, and now the Allison has gone. I knew nothing about the demolition and was surprised and saddened to see it being brought down. It was a great pub.”

Coun Hanson said he hoped to see something “useful” on the site.

He said: “Whatever the plans for the building, it will need planning approval and the people of Low Simonside will have their say in whatever goes up there.”

I doubt it Tom, the site is tiny and very prone to vandalism. I can't see anyone wanting to build anything there, it's not as if you can rely on passing trade.

Work finishes on £5.4m 'One Trinity Green' centre
by Ruth Lognonne, The Journal, June 29th 2012

WORK on a £5.4m centre on Tyneside which is aimed at growing small businesses in the environmental sector is now complete. Hailed as one of the world’s greenest buildings, One Trinity Green will provide a home for 35 SMEs who will then receive help to grow their business.

The 30,000sq ft centre is split into 40 units and sits on a site in South Shields on which once stood the Circatex circuit-board factory before it shut in 2001 with the loss of 850 jobs. The three-storey building features flexible office, workshop and hybrid units boasting state-of-the-art environmental technology, telecoms and IT facilities.

The project, which will focus on firms in the environmental and low-carbon sectors, is being led by South Tyneside Council and Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle. The building, which is due to open in August, recently took the crown for this year’s greenest office development at an international awards ceremony.

I've just had a check on those new houses in Hebburn and they are going for £77,500. I'm not sure I'd like to live there myself but thats a good deal if your wanting a home to let out or for a long term investment.
