Any more updates on how the rail tracks will be entering out of the CBD train station...leave how the are now or sink underground.

I read somewhere that they are thinking of adding underground walk way so passengers can exit out to the River Torrens and also help when and/or if they go underground rail in the Adelaide CBD ?

Long overdue this, but great that it's finally happening. This road is a mess during peak hour with lots of buses and general traffic.

CARS TO MAKE WAY FOR CITY BUSES

Updated May 23, 2012, 3:20 pm

Dedicated bus lanes will be introduced in Adelaide's streets as the State Government attempts to crackdown on late running services.

Cars will be reduced to a single lane in Currie and Grenfell Streets between 7am to 7pm (ACST) from Monday to Friday.

The same conditions will apply to East Terrace between North Terrace and Grenfell Street.

Turning options will also be restricted under the trial changes, which will be introduced from the beginning of July.

While the State Government says the measure will cut three minutes off bus trips, the RAA says it may lead to increased traffic congestion.

RAA spokeswoman Penny Gale says the plan is unlikely to encourage more people to catch buses.

"We're a bit surprised that the State Government's gone it alone on this one. We're concerned that not enough thought has been gone to where will the cars go," she said.

"We're not anti-public transport but you really have to look at the big picture here and I think from what we're seeing here today that hasn't yet been provided."

'Benefit all'

Premier Jay Weatherill says he does not believe the trial will cause delays and extra frustration for peak-hour drivers.

"As the buses run on time, as we get more reliability in the bus service, we expect that that will attract more people on to public transport. That should ease the congestion and make it easier for other road users including the cars to use this road more effectively," he said.

"As more people get on to the buses that will ensure the road is freer for other users."

Transport Services Minister Chloe Fox also downplayed the prospect of traffic jams as a result of the changes.

"We're not just helping buses here, we're also helping motorists because we are creating a lane for them that is dedicated to motorists only so hopefully that will help us move through the city," she said.

The announcement is in response to a backlash from commuter and a rise in complaints about late running services.

Earlier this month, the Government slapped fines of a combined $218,000 on three bus companies.

Mr Weatherill says the necessary roadworks will cost $200,000.

"There's some median strip work that needs to be done, a little bit of painting that needs to be done and some signage. It's about equivalent to the penalties we're recovering from the bus companies so it should be revenue neutral," he said.

Taxis will also be allowed to use the bus lanes.

Exactly how will this go with traffic congestion being that cars are funneled into 1 lane instead of the usual 2 ???

It is funny that throughput of private vehicles has been shown to increase on 4 lane roads when 2 lanes are dedicated for bus/transit lanes.

And yes I am being deadly serious.

Umm.. reference here? I can only think of the Victoria Bridge in Brisbane when they halved the traffic lanes for 2 dedicated bus lanes - certainly didnt increase the throughput of cars!

I remember a study (can't remember the source) that found on Waterworks Road throughput increased due to the significant reduction in lane changing. Changing lanes had more impact on the average speed of vehicles than reduced capacity!

Rumours are going around that the SA Government are going to scrap rail electrification and the new trains in the state budget today

although they are talking about increasing public transport investment with things like more buses, on-board information trials, and more commuter park and ride parking stations.

Port, Semaphore tramline derailed in State Budget

But hundreds of extra park-and-ride spaces will be added to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre funded, in part, by a doubling of parking fees.

The State Government was to start work in 2015/16 on standardising the gauge of train and tram lines to allow trams to run along the Outer Harbor line.

The work would have meant trams running to the Port by 2018/19.

The move will save the government $35 million in 2015/16.

It comes just months after the government pledged to revitalise the Port by taking back planning control, after axing its contract with the Newport Quays consortium.

A tram line to the city has long been seen as crucial to the revival of the Port, with Port Adelaide Enfield Council and local businesses previously calling for the extension to be brought forward to 2013.

Meantime, 600 carparks will be added to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for park-and-ride users in an $11.8 million State Budget commitment.

Treasurer Jack Snelling said the existing carpark was at capacity on weekdays.

He said a new multi-deck carpark would bring the total number of spaces to 1350.

The carpark will be completed by next June.

Commuters will face a doubling of the parking fee from $2 to $4 to help pay for the work.

The tram ride from the entertainment centre into the city will remain free.

Gawler, Outer Harbour electric trains delayed in State Budget

The projects, which would have made train travel faster and smoother, were deferred by Treasurer Jack Snelling until 2015/16 as part of today's State Budget.

The decision will save the State Government $372.9 million.

Mr Snelling said the electrification would be put on hold "while we wait for revenues to return to more normal levels".

The move comes just two months after the completion of re-sleepering works on the Gawler line.

The line was closed for seven months during the works, causing disruption to commuters and local businesses.

Further work on both lines, which will include installation of poles and wires, will be put on hold until 2015/16.

The electrification of the Noarlunga line from Adelaide to Seaford will continue.

It will be completed by late 2013.

The electrification of the Gawler and Outer Harbour Lines have been scrapped, the new electric trains and electrification of Adelaide-Seaford and Tonsley branch is still going ahead though.

The electrification of the Gawler and Outer Harbour lines has only been delayed until 2015/16, so it's still happening. Personally I'm pretty annoyed that the Gawler line project has been delayed considering poles have already been errected and the disruptions this has already caused. Big mistake there

Though it's not new about Outer Harbour, that was delayed last year and it's more than likely this will be done with the construction of a kilometre-long tunnel and underground station at Bowden. Plus the whole tram-train idea was very ambitious to begin with and raised alot of questions

Either way it's more than likely Labor will be slaughted in the 2014 election, let's just prey to god we have a serious and improved opposition by then.

Though it's not all doom and gloom. The new ticketing system is still being rolled out with the introduction of new gates at Adelaide Station and the commencement of the smart card trial. While the dysfunctional Adelaide Metro website is believed to be in the process of getting a major overhaul.

All buses will be fitted with GPS equipment by the end of this year, where people will be able to get exact information of where their bus is, eg on iPhone and Android apps. From what I've heard, I believe Adelaide is the first Australian city to do this and will massively change the public transport landscape. Pretty sure this also includes trains and trams aswell.

Furthermore the commitment to spend $17.1 million on upgrading the O'Bahn busway intechanges remain, work is expected to start on Klemzig mid next year. The start date for Tea Tree Plaza and Paradise interchanges hasn't been announced yet.

Goodwood rail upgrade to start in January

WORK to separate the freight and commuter rail lines at Goodwood is expected to start next January.

The State Government has set aside $110 million for the project in its 2012/13 Budget.

The lines' intersection near Leader St will be split so that the passenger line will pass under the freight line.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-2013.

The Goodwood grade separation is the first stage of the joint State and Federal government's $443 million upgrade of the Goodwood and Torrens rail lines.

The second separation is expected to be undertaken at the Bowden TOD site in 2015/16.

Treasurer Jack Snelling said the upgrades would "increase productivity".

A Transport Department spokesman said no housing would be acquired to accommodate the Goodwood separation.

I can't believe that anyone would want to vote for Redmond and her clowns. I couldn't stand to see that loser in power. The whole party has to be the worst opposition this state has ever seen.

Watch for new bus lanes - or cop $225 fine

New city priority bus lanes on Currie and Grenfell Streets and East Tce will come into effect from 7am Monday. Picture: Aaron Schintler

THE new city priority bus lanes on Currie and Grenfell Streets and East Tce will come into effect from 7am Monday.

Transport Department spokesman Paul Gelston said the dedicated bus lanes are designed to improve bus movement through the CBD.

"The priority bus lanes form part of an ongoing initiative to improve public transport services into and out of the city centre," Mr Gelston said.

"These new bus lanes will now operate from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, in both directions, along the length of Currie and Grenfell Streets and along East Terrace between Grenfell St and North Tce.

"In addition to buses, taxis, cyclists and emergency vehicles are also permitted to travel in priority bus lanes, improving travel times for these vehicles as well."

He said the department will work with SA Police and the Adelaide City Council to monitor the operation of the priority bus lanes, and the impacts on other commuters.

While the priority bus lane is in operation drivers must not park or stop in a bus lane.

"They must also not drive in a bus lane, except when, entering or leaving the road, overtaking a vehicle turning right or making a U-turn from the centre of a road or avoiding an obstruction - in each case the maximum distance you may drive in the bus lane is 100 metres."

The penalty for driving in a bus lane is $225.

Drivers will still be able to access off street car park areas, but some small changes to access routes may be necessary.
Good old Advertiser forgets to mention that fines will not be issued in the first 3 months.

What a great little video promo that is...looks great. The only downside was the lack of bike lanes for the star of the video to use.
