Dulles Metrorail Extension

With all the hoopla over MWAA's decision to put the proposed Dulles Airport metro station underground instead of above-ground as nearly everyone else advocates, the second phase of the Dulles Metrorail project is now in crisis.

How does everyone feel about the decision? Do you think the MWAA was right to put the station underground?

"LaHood told the Airports Authority there’s no way the Obama Administration could possibly grant the project a loan of the size they’re requesting."

Yeah, too busy wasting that money on efforts that won't have any ROI, instead of one that will (overpriced or not)

Is there no way that either side can find cost-savings elsewhere yet still keep the underground station at Dulles Airport?

I think in the end, after of all of this political and red tape garbage, the station will be underground. If money needs to be saved, terminate the Silver Line at Dulles rather then Herndon. In addition, VE components of the proposed rail yard proposed to be located at Dulles.

Since this relates to IAD, should this thread be moved to the IAD and DCA Thread? Any thoughts?

Did I say your topic is dull? Your topic is quite legitimate, though I think it should be part of the IAD and DCA thread. Considering the fact that MWAA is a major player with the construction of the Silver Line.

I thought the IAD/DCA thread was for airport/airline-specific discussion

They dropped the union-friendly labor agreement to satisfy the moving goal posts of the Virginia GOP.

I find it more important to move forward with Phase II even if a few compromises are needed. The long term implications are far more prudent as compared to short term needs. ...Just my opinion.

Judging by this station site plan, it looks as if there will be a center-platform for the Dulles Airport station.
