Philippine Airlines backstabbed Brisbane, not giving it a chance by pulling out months after starting. Thanks for being Sydney/Melbourne centric. Come back to Brisbane in the future we don't want Zest or Cebu rubbish.

Sorry to hear that...

PHL to hold pre-bid conference for airport projects June 22

Quote:
The pre-bidding conference for the construction, rehabilitation and expansion of seven airports next month is a welcome step toward government’s campaign to enhance Philippine tourism through infrastructure development, Malacañang said Friday.

Open to all parties, the conference will be held next Friday, June 22, at the DOTC Conference Room, 16th Floor, The Columbia Tower, Mandaluyong City, according to a statement by the Department of Transportation and Communications.

Included in the package are the Butuan Airport in Agusan del Sur, Cotabato City Airport in Maguindanao, Dipolog Airport in Zamboanga del Norte, Pagadian Airport in Zamboanga del Sur, Sanga-Sanga Airport in Tawi-Tawi, Maasin Airport in Southern Leyte, and San Vicente Airport in Palawan.

Documents released by the DOTC spelled out partial details of each project:

Butuan City’s P45.5-million airport development entails expanding the apron or docking bay and car park, constructing a drainage system and a concrete hollow-block fence.

The P58.1-million Cotabato airport development calls for widening its runway and taxiway. It supports the program to make North Cotabato a strategic link to the major “Arterial Road System” which connects the province to the Davao City-SOCCSKSARGEN-Cotabato corridor. The road system also connects the Cotabato via Kabacan-Maramag-Kibawe, Bukidnon Sayre Highway linking the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan City corridor.

The P55.2-million Dipolog airport development covers labor, materials, and equipment supply to complete the passenger terminal building. Dipolog is the one of the busiest air terminals in Mindanao.

The P42-million Pagadian Airport project seeks to improve its facilities to accommodate both commercial and private aircraft. The project will also extend the runway, widen the taxiway, rehabilitate and improve the passenger terminal building, improve and expand the car park area, and build a drainage system and a perimeter fence.

Tawi-Tawi’s P63.9-million Sanga-Sanga airport project in Bongao needs to have a new terminal building, expand its apron, and build a drainage system.

The airport in Maasin, Leyte, needs major improvements accommodate commercial flights. Part of the project to support local government initiatives on tourism initiatives is to extend the runway and clear a hill obstructing air traffic.

The P62.7-million San Vicente Airport development requires a passenger terminal, fire station building, and an elevated 2,500-gallon water tank. Its runway also needs to be extended with a slope protection, and a hill obstruction removed.

Airport terminals as romantic spots? Why not!

Quote:
Romancing Naia at P5,096 a pop

Here’s a new venue to pop the question.

While some travelers rated the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) as among the world’s worst, some men actually find it the best place to propose marriage to their girlfriends.

The airport has also become a venue for taking engagement photos, according to Ayra Noveno, public relations assistant of the Manila International Airport Authority’s (MIAA) media affairs division.

Elaborate proposal

Last week, Jun Raymundo, 30, a porter at the Naia Terminal 1, carried out an elaborate wedding proposal that certainly swept his girlfriend, Mutya Araja, 28, off her feet.

As Araja, an overseas Filipino worker in Italy, walked through the Naia 1 arrival gate, she was greeted by Raymundo’s friends and neighbors who were wearing shirts that spelled out the words “I love you, Mutya,” and carrying a big streamer saying, “Mutya Araja, will you marry me?”

Porters handed her dozens of red roses before Raymundo, who himself was carrying a bouquet of flowers, got down on his knees and popped the question.

Confetti rained as a teary-eyed Araja answered “Yes,” eliciting cheers and applause from the crowd and amused passengers.

Raymundo said he courted Araja, his neighbor in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, for seven years. She became his girlfriend three years ago before she left for Milan.

Thanks to friends and neighbors who contributed T-shirts, streamer, flowers, as well as the photo and video coverage, his mission was accomplished.

Minimum fee

But while Raymundo got all his proposal props for free, he still shelled out P5,096, the minimum fee (12 percent VAT inclusive) charged by MIAA for the use of the venue.

“The fee includes two-hour filming or use of the venue and security passes for the people involved in the proposal,” Noveno explained.

Last year, Sherlyn Marcelo requested MIAA to allow her and her fiance’s engagement photo shoot to be held at the Naia Terminal 3 because “travel has always been part of our relationship and the façade of Naia 3 is so picturesque.”

Their wedding theme, Marcelo said, was vintage travel.

Some men choose an airport proposal because their romance involves the airport in some way.

Parting of ways

Ramlo John Torres, 29, who proposed marriage to his girlfriend Cloe in April, said he decided to do it at the airport “because airports had been a symbol of sadness for both of us.”

“It’s where we always part ways. This time, I want to reverse that,” Torres said in his letter of request for permit to MIAA. “I want to propose to her at the airport and make that promise that I’ll make her happy for the rest of our lives.

For the last three years, the airport was a sad place for both of us. But last year, she decided to come home for good and I just can’t get enough of the fact that we’re together at last,” he added.

Hydrographic surveyor Rocky Magdasoc, 33, also surprised his girlfriend Angela Navales, with a marriage proposal upon her arrival from Canada.

“This is the place where we parted and I want it to be the place where we have to meet again to be together for good,” Magdasoc said in his letter to MIAA.

‘Bourne’ shoot

Apart from engagement photo shoots and marriage proposals, the Naia terminals have also been often used for on-location filming.

Some scenes of the coming international spy thriller film “The Bourne Legacy” were recently shot at the Naia 3.

Bungag explained that the film and photo shoots as well as wedding proposals they allow at the terminals are subject to evaluation and assessment by the MIAA management.

“There is a memorandum circular that stipulates the guidelines to be implemented when using the airport for those activities,” she said. “And usually, those activities are allowed only in nonoperating areas so as not to inconvenience passengers. They should not in any way affect normal airport operations.”

Zest Airways remain as attractive investment
(WCARN.com/Malaya, July 2)

Quote:
Zest Airways Inc., Philipppines' newest airline, retains its attraction to other carriers, counting as many as three suitors as movements and merger in the low cost airline industry heat up.

Zest Air chairman Donald Dee said in an interview that Singapore budget carrier Tiger Airways has expressed interest in Zest Air while China's Hainan Airlines remains keen on the local airline. The Philippine Airlines also expressed interest in Zest Air.

Zest is owned by Zest-o juice drink manufacturer Alfredo Yao. Dee said "nothing serious" has come out of the separate discussions with the three carriers but Zest Air retains its attraction as a platform for expansion in the region.

"Zest Air is very new and holds the remaining landing rights in Manila. It is one of three flag carriers and still enjoys tax breaks. It has no debt and thus has no negative carry," Dee said.

"We are always open to proposals but the offer (we will accept) has to be something that we cannot refuse," Dee added when asked about how much equity is being targeted by the investors.

In June Tiger Airways bought a 40 percent stake in another local low cost carrier South East Asian Airlines (SEAIR).

Should Tiger buy into Zest Air it will provide synergy and speed up its expansion plans in the country.

It would also be a challenge to the Philippine affiliate of AirAsia, a budget airline based in Malaysia, which has been aggressively expanding in the country from its hub in Clark.

A possible joint venture with Hainan, the largest non-state owned airline in China, will allow Zest Air to fly direct to Hainan province and extend its footprint in China. Hainan has expressed interest in Zest Air as early as October 2011 and Zest Air has reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding with the firm.

PAL, which has its own low-cost carrier Air Philippines which it pits against Gokongweis' Cebu Air. Zest Air was established by Yao's AMY Holdings Corp. in March 2008 from the former Asian Spirit.

The law pegs the limit foreign ownership of an airline to 40 percent in the case of Tiger and Hainan, but not a problem with PAL, now owned by San Miguel Corp.

But Dee said for Zest Air to have a bigger slice of the market, it has to expand. "We can't do it on our own."

Dee said the idea is to fold in the carrier with their own low-cost operations and achieve economies of scale.

As a fast-growing carrier, Zest Air now has about 17 to 20 percent market share and enjoys a high load factor of 70 percent.

Zest Air has a fleet of 11 Airbus A320s and would take in the delivery for lease of two to three more before yearend.

"We would have about 13 to 14 aircraft by the end of the year," Dee said.
Among its international destinations are Malaysia, China, South Korea and Taiwan and is planning to mount flights to Singapore and Japan.

Over the medium term, Zest Air plans to fly to the Middle East. It may also resume its Hong Kong flight.

Report said Zest Air flew 2.3 million passengers last year a big majority of 2.1 million are domestic passengers.

According to Cebu Air, low-cost carriers have contributed about 96 percent of total domestic air travel market growth from 2006 to 2011 driven mainly of the low fares they offer.

Cebu Air also said today, average airline fares are now 30 percent than they were 10 years ago, ago despite the high cost of fuel. This was attributed to low-cost carriers, whose promo fares and seat sales make flying more affordable.

In 2006, only 1 out of every 2 domestic passengers used low-cost carriers. But in 2011, budget airlines cornered a 76 percent share of the domestic market or 3 out 4 domestic passengers flying on low-cost carriers, CEB said.

Nayong Pilipino turns over 22 hectares for NAIA expansion

Quote:
The Philippines' main airport will have more space for the future cargo requirements of its third terminal after the Nayong Pilipino Foundation turned over additional properties to the facility.

On Wednesday, control over 22.3 hectares - slightly larger than 22 football fields - were handed over to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), which runs the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The turnover will allow the expansion and development of the new international cargo terminal facility to support the growth and needs of NAIA Terminal 3, officials said in a statement. It will also help expand Terminal 2, they said.

Philippine Airlines to fly to new Las Vegas airport terminal

Quote:
Passengers traveling from Manila, Philippines to Las Vegas, Nevada, will now arrive at the new US$2.4-billion airport terminal 3 opened June 28 at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, the seventh busiest airport in the US.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is the only Philippine carrier serving the Manila-Las Vegas route, via Vancouver, bringing tourists to the so-called "Entertainment Capital of the world" which receives a total of 40 million visitors a year. In response to the increasing number of Asian tourists to Las Vegas, there will be four flights per week from Manila, it was announced this week, using the wide-body Airbus A340 aircraft.

Cebu Pacific to offer inflight Wi-Fi on long-haul flights

Quote:
MANILA, Philippines - Leading low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific will offer Wi-Fi for its passengers on long-haul routes starting next year.

In a statement, Cebu Pacific said it will provide OnAir Internet service to its passengers on the Airbus A330. The airline also has the option to install Wi-Fi on its current fleet of Airbus A320 planes for short-haul flights.

This will allow passengers to access Internet and make calls using Voice Over IP applications on phones, tablets, and laptops during their flights.

"Cebu Pacific has a highly social community of over 600,000 likes on Facebook and over 380,000 Twitter followers. We are very happy to provide our guests with the convenience of online connectivity while in-flight," said Candice Iyog, CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution

Cebu Pacific will be the first long-haul, low-cost carrier in Southeast Asia, as well as first Philippine carrier, to provide inflight Internet access.

PAL eyes $300-M savings by flying new planes
(The Philippine Star, July 25)

Quote:
MANILA, Philippines - Flag carrier Philippine Airlines Inc. (PAL), a unit of diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC), could save as much as $300 million a year from the use of new Boeing 777 aircrafts from Boeing Co. for long-haul routes while redeploying other jets to handle shorter routes and expects to breakeven for fiscal year 2012.

PAL and SMC president Ramon Ang said in an interview with reporters during the cocktail reception for its third new B777-300ER that the use of the new aircrafts would increase the airline’s efficiency and profitability.

The 370-seater B777s currently fly to Vancouver, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and Japan via Cebu and each B777 has two of the largest and most powerful commercial jet engines – the GE90-115BL. The aircraft boasts of exceptional fuel economy, efficiency, reliability and high levels of cabin comfort for its passengers, combined with unmatched levels of payload (28 tons of cargo) and range (7,825 nautical miles).

Cebu Pacific 1st in Asia Pacific to use Airbus safety system

Quote:
Cebu Pacific is the first airline in the Asia Pacific region to use an Airbus-developed automated system for reporting, monitoring and analyzing safety data.

Called the Safety Assessment and Management System, its software was installed at Cebu Pacific and went live June this year.

Airbus safety management experts also conducted SAMS’s initial training for Cebu Pacific flight personnel.

Airbus developed SAMS to integrate flight monitoring into one of the world’s most state-of-the-art safety tool. SAMS combines the latest risk assessment methodology and best practices for automated reporting, processing, measurement and analysis for airline operators.

The system has been recognized by the global aviation industry and has become an International Civil Aviation Organization standard for all air operators from January 2009.

CEB currently operates 10 Airbus A319, 20 Airbus A320 and eight ATR-72 500 aircraft.

Cebu Pacific selling old planes to Vegas airline

Quote:
Budget carrier Cebu Pacific is discarding nearly a third of its fleet and replacing its old planes with bigger and more efficient aircraft, as the airline continues to find ways to cut costs.

In a disclosure, Cebu Pacific operator Cebu Air Inc. said it would sell 10 of its 150-seater Airbus A319 aircraft to Nasdaq-listed Allegiant Travel, a low-cost airline based in Las Vegas.

The A319s are the oldest and smallest planes in Cebu Pacific’s fleet. The airline also operates eight ATR turbo propeller planes that are used mainly for inter-island flights.

Between now and 2014, Cebu Pacific will be taking delivery of 15 brand-new Airbus A320. The company is also taking delivery of four Airbus A330s that will allow the airline to mount long-haul flights. Cebu Pacific said it was planning to mount flights to points in the United States, the Middle East, Europe and Australia.

Gokongwei said the airline was also exploring options to advance the delivery of Airbus A320 orders scheduled for delivery between 2015 and 2016.

First A380 repair completed in Manila

Quote:
Manila-based aircraft maintenance firm Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) reached a milestone this month after completing the reconfiguration of a Qantas Airbus A380 plane’s passenger cabin—a feat that has been done nowhere else in the world.

In a statement at the weekend, LTP said the project’s completion asserted the company’s position as one of the world’s premier aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) providers.

“Of the 75 A380 aircraft in service all over the world, this is the first aircraft to undergo cabin reconfiguration,” LTP said. The Qantas plane is the second A380 to land on Philippine soil. Currently, there are no commercial passenger flights to the Philippines that use A380 jets.

The Airbus A380, a double-deck, wide-bodied jetliner, is the world’s largest passenger plane. The first A380s went into commercial service in 2007.

For this first reconfiguration, licensed aircraft maintenance engineers and technical representatives from Qantas Airways were on site to work hand in hand with Lufthansa Technik Philippines engineers and mechanics. Likewise, experts from Airbus and suppliers were also present to help.

Apart from the cabin upgrades, LTP said it also completed an upgrade of the A380’s internal wing “rib” structure. “The expertise of LTP’s structures team was a significant factor in the success of the wing-rib modification and in lessening its impact on the turnaround time of the cabin reconfiguration,” the company said.

Eleven more A380s from Qantas were set to arrive and have their cabins reconfigured at LTP’s Manila facility. Service on the arriving planes will be done solely by LTP personnel, who recently completed A380-specific training programs in Frankfurt, Germany.

LTP’s A380 hangar opened earlier this year. The facility cost $30 million to build.

MANILA, Philippines - Clark International Airport in Pampanga was ranked third best airport freezone in the world according to a survey conducted by a magazine published by the Financial Times Business Group of London.

FDi Magazine, a bi-monthly news and foreign direct investment publication, recently published its "Global Free Zones of the Future 2012/13" report. In the magazine's report, Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC), which runs the airport, was named the third best freeport airport in the world.

The same magazine ranked Clark Freeport Zone as the 8th best freeport zone in the world, with Dubai Airport Free Zone being named the best. In 2010, Clark Freeport Zone was ranked 7th.

Earlier, the Department of Transportation and Communication said it is financing a P100-million study on the feasibility of turning Clark International Airport into the main international airport of the country.

Tiger Airways Completes Investment in SEAir
(WCARN.com/The Sun Daily, Aug. 14)

Quote:
Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd, one of Asia's leading low-cost carriers, today completed the transaction to acquire a 40 percent stake in Southeast Asian Airlines Inc (SEAir) for US$2.5 million. The US$7 million purchase price, which was agreed with the sellers, has been reduced by liabilities determined in a due diligence review.

The investment will be held through Tiger's wholly-owned subsidiary, Roar Aviation II Pte Ltd. Tiger is committed to supporting the working capital needs of SEAir, including pre-existing liabilities, with shareholder loans of up to US$40 million. The loan tenure is for five years.

Commenting on the acquisition, Tiger Group Chief Executive Officer Koay Peng Yen, said: "Together with our Philippines' business partners, our immediate focus will be on scaling up the business through network expansion, building a strong customer base and establishing the airline's brand presence." He said the Philippines has tremendous growth potential and "we welcome the opportunity to be at the heart of it."
