645 A/C bus shelters completed

Shelters are working efficiently

RTA – Nashwan M. Al Taee
Public Transport Agency at Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) announced that its work teams have installed and operated 645 air-conditioned bus shelters in 456 locations across the emirate of Dubai.
The Director of Buses Dep’t at Public Transport Agency Abdulla Yousef Al Ali said that work is in full swing despite difficulties besting this vital project.
“Recently a number of observations were raised regarding the performance of air-conditioners inside these shelters. Users complained that a/c were not providing sufficient cool air in the shelters. From our part we confirm that these air conditioners are in fact highly efficient but the drop in their performance is attributed to the misuse on the part of some passengers who leave the door open for long periods. This triggers the air-conditioner to stop for a certain period, which negatively impacts the quality of air-conditioning inside the shelter, rendering it vulnerable to outdoor weather which is already witnessing soaring temperature these days. Moreover, some stations have been installed but not operated as construction works, including electrical cabling, have not been completed as yet” explained Al Ali.
He appealed to the users of these air-conditioned bus shelters in the emirate of Dubai to properly use these shelters which are considered one of the prime services proved by the RTA to Dubai residents as they have been provided in the first place as a service to a wide spectrum of community segments. “These shelters are meant to provide a comfortable environment for waiting bus passengers and a key pillar in integrating mass transit modes in the emirate, he commented.
“The underlying objective of providing this service is to encourage the public to use public buses, enabling them to benefit from innovative and globally pioneering solutions that create a comfortable environment instead of waiting for buses under the blazing sun heat during summer. This project is a cornerstone of the drive to broaden, renovate and integrate public transport sector; spanning deploying of ultra-modern buses imported from the best specialized international manufacturers” added Al Ali .
In a final comment he said: “These shelters are modeled after the shape of the crescent, coated with a metallic paint, and fitted with advanced air-conditioning systems. They include prime ad spaces offering a technology for the first time in the UAE and the region, while enabling cleaner environment through providing garbage recycling bins among other facilities”.

‘Finishing line’ near for Dubai’s air-conditioned bus shelters

DUBAI // Operators of the city’s air-conditioned bus shelters say nearly 90 per cent of them are now working, with the remainder to be completed by the end of January.

They added that the shelters’ air-conditioning system had been improved following complaints from passengers during the summer.

With most of the Red Line’s Metro stations finished, building teams are now able to complete the bus shelters next to them.

“While the Metro was being finished, there was a lot of work going on around them. Where there was previously a lot of hoardings up, it’s being cleared up and enables us to finish off the contract. We can see the finishing line,” said Patrick Chaundy, the chief executive of Right Angle Media, which has a contract with the Roads and Transport Authority to design, build, and operate the shelters.

Currently, there are 889 bus shelters at 624 locations throughout Dubai and Right Angle hopes to complete the contractual 971 by the end of January.

Mr Chaundy said the number of reports that the shelters’ air-conditioning units were breaking down had fallen after the RTA conducted an educational campaign to stop users keeping the doors open.

“People would sit there with their foot wedged against the door or in a lot of cases a plastic bottle and wedging them. It is somewhat akin to having a car and putting it in neutral and putting your foot on the accelerator,” said Mr Chaundy.

He said sometimes people would phone in to report a broken-down shelter without being able to give its exact location. “We have added an identification number so any member of the public can quote that number to get people in to fix it.”

Extra bus routes were added at the start of the month, serving several parts of the city. Route 22 will run from Deira Bus Station to Al Nahdah 1, Route 47 will go from Rashidiya Bus Station to Jumeirah Beach Park and Route 53 will run from Gold Souq Station to International City. Route 88 will start at Deira City Centre Bus Station and bring commuters to Dubai Media City.

Routes 99 and 8A have both been extended to Ibn Battuta Station, and Route 93 has been extended to Mall of the Emirates Station.

RTA continues construction of air-conditioned bus shelters across Dubai

Roads & Transport Authority – Nashwan Atta’ee:

The Public Transport Agency at Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has so far completed construction of 760 air-conditioned bus shelters at 656 locations in Dubai, hitting a completion rate as high as 97%, with an operation rate reaching 81%, meanwhile work is up and running in completing the remaining shelters whose total number is 971 shelters, according to Abdulla Yousef Al Ali, Director of Bus Dep’t at RTA Public Transport Agency.

“This project is one of the strategic initiatives undertaken by the RTA to provide comfortable services to the users of public buses, particularly during the soaring temperature in the summer season as these shelters have been fitted with air-conditioners to provide a comfortable environment for waiting bus passengers” he said.

“The main objective of launching this service is to entice the public to use public buses through providing innovative & cutting edge solutions offering passengers a comfortable environment while waiting for buses. The project plays a pivotal role in broadening, improving and integrating public transport sector spanning public buses, metro and marine transit modes” continued Al Ali.

“The Public Transport agency is always keen on widening and upgrading its work mechanism through offering a package of creative solutions designed to offer best-in-class services to the public including citizens, residents, visitors and tourists. It seeks to encourage them to use public transportation network; which would undoubtedly contribute to smooth traffic flow, beat traffic congestion, and minimize traffic road accidents” added Al Ali.

126 new air-con bus shelters for Dubai by July

Some 126 new air conditioned bus shelters will be ready for July as transport officials try to improve the "weak" demand for public transportation in Dubai compared to other big cities.

by Andy Sambidge on Thursday, 27 May 2010

Essa Abdul Raham Al Dossari, CEO of Public Transport Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said that 126 more bus shelters were under construction.

The total in operation by July would be 656, with plans to increase the number to 2,000 "very soon", added Al Dossari in comments published by Khaleej Times.

Al Dossari admitted the culture of using public transport in Dubai was weak compared to some other big cities in the world.

But he added that in terms of services Dubai was "second to none".

Since 2005 when RTA took over as the public transport operator of the emirate, the use of public transport has doubled from six to 12 percent, the paper said.

The RTA said it was confident that the figure will reach 30 percent by 2020.

The paper added that the punctuality of buses had improved from 17.5 percent in January 2009 to 60 percent in March 2010. >> Arabian Business

200 new bus shelters across Dubai soon

Shafaat Ahmed (
kt exclusive) | 10 August 2010

DUBAI — The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will be setting up around 200 more bus shelters across Dubai in the next few months.

This summer, the RTA has already increased the number of bus shelters from 530 to the current 760, while the new set of shelters will take the tally to over 950.

Revealing the details of the project exclusively to Khaleej Times, Mohammed Abubaker Al Hashimi, the Director of Planning and Business Development at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency (PTA), said that the work on installing around 200 more shelters was already in progress and they should open for the public one by one in the next few months.

“Most of the structural work has been completed; even the ACs have been installed in many shelters, but there are certain formalities that need to be done before they start operating,” said Al Hashimi, adding that setting up of the bus shelters involves cooperation with other government bodies like DEWA.

“We need to acquire NOCs from DEWA and other bodies; we need to have the electricity connected as well, and there are other formalities too. Still we are doing it fairly quickly. To have around thousand bus shelters in just about two years is no minor feat,” he said. Reacting to the complaints that shelters at certain stops were not working, he said, “these shelters are still under construction; just because the structure is in place and the AC is installed it cannot be operated straight away. There are other formalities and procedures to be taken care of.”

He asked people to notify RTA’s customer service immediately if they see any old shelter not working, and urged people to bear with the inconvenience for a while.

He also reminded the commuters that Dubai is the only city in the world to have air-conditioned bus shelters. With the bus network expanding as frenetically as the city, the demands for new bus shelters are also increasing and to cope with the existing and future demands the authorities are studying a proposal to set up 1,500 more shelters in the near future.

“Apart from the 200-odd shelters that will open in the next few months, we are studying a proposal to set up 1,500 more shelters. Our planning team is doing the survey on demands and needs of the people, and based on the result we’ll proceed further,” said Al Hashimi, explaining the details of the mega project.

The demand for more shelters has increased after the launch of the metro, with dozens of new feeder routes being added, and simultaneously dotted with hundreds of new stops.

Khaleej Times had earlier reported commuters’ requests for shelters at certain metro stations, which see long queues of people waiting for feeder buses during peak hours.
Acting on these requests, the RTA has already installed non-AC shelter at the Ibn Batuta Station.

52 degree Celsius in bus shelters

XPRESS gauged the temperature at dozens of AC bus shelters in Dubai. The thermometer read above 50 at many places

Dubai: Bus shelters across Dubai have turned into virtual roadside ovens with the air conditioning out of order in many, an XPRESS survey has revealed.

A sample survey done on Sunday in Dubai's highly populated areas such as Karama, Bur Dubai, Jumeirah and Al Quoz showed that 12 out of 38 bus stops - nearly one in three - did not have air conditioning.

Outdoor temperatures in Dubai hover in the mid-40s , but the noontime temperature inside these un-cooled bus shelters were up by at least 10 degrees - 55 degrees Celsius - with dead heat trapped inside the glass-and-metal shelters, turning them into scorching ovens in the fierce summer heat.

100 AC bus shelters not working in Dubai

Quote:
By Sneha Francis and Majorie van Leijen | Published Monday, July 09, 2012

The summer is well and truly here with temperatures flirting with the 50DegC mark.

However, users of public transport have found that not all the AC bus shelters in the emirate are functioning, and at some locations there is no AC shelter at all.
