Great photos. Was that one man in stairs homeless? I can't believe that there is homeless people in China.

Absolutely captivating shots of day to day scenes, I must say that the Chinese people look very well dressed. It's not very common to see street level photos of Beijing and I think the city looks beautiful, it's a shame that the grounds of the Bird's Nest stadium look somewhat run down only four years after the Olympic games.

openlyjane, you are welcome, beijing is for sure interesting visit worth staying at least 2-3 weeks to see many different things and meet nice people. although as resident after almost year I am not so big fan of PEK

apinamiest, probably homeless, there are homeless people living under bridges or different places even in China and many who are not homeless live in great poverty so especially during weekends it's not problem to meet disabled people or mother with children walking through subway trains begging for money, typical western street begging is quite uncommon and seen very rarely

darklite, you are right bird's nest is really rundown (I was also suprised to see national aquatics center for 1st time, by photos/videos it looked magnificient compared to what I experienced (some low cost dirty plastic made in china)), taking care/administration/managing is not strong part of chinese character

can't see my photos right now (Picasa is sort of blocked in China), but AFAIR it should be very noisy insects (grasshopper?) which were hanged high above floor at entrance to one restaurant to attract customers, they are very loud, so for me it works in opposite way and I try to get as far as possible quickly

I don't know more consuming nation than Chinese, Chinese seem to do nothing else in weekends than going from mall to mall, that's the main weekend activity.

Do most people still have just one child?

I guess, it's difficult to say sometimes, but from talking with colleagues if they are from cities then they are single children or they are from families with connections (guanxi) so they didn't have to pay fine.
