Bahrain Air to add second hub in Dammam Bahrain Air announced in Apr-2012 it had selected Dammam as its first hub outside of Bahrain. The carrier plans to launch services from Dammam to Beirut and Sudan’s Khartoum from 13-Jun-2012. Beirut will be served four times weekly, and the carrier will compete with Middle East Airlines and Saudi Arabian Airlines on the route. Khartoum flights will operate three times per week and Bahrain Air will enjoy a monopoly on the route. Bahrain Air CEO Richard Nuttal commented that the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia has been a very important market for the carrier since it started operations, but now the carrier can “truly call it our second home”. Many Saudis choose to cross the Saudi-Bahrain causeway and fly out of Bahrain instead of Dammam due to the better facilities and wider range of destinations – and attractive fares – at Bahrain International Airport.

How did you know that? And does that mean that BA is going to operate instead of BMI? I would love to see BA B777 in Khartoum

Sorry, I confused you a little. My point was that BMI is being owned by BA, and thus BA via BMI comes to Khartoum.
Unfortunately, I have no idea if BA will operate this route with it's own metal. On the other hand, I heard rumors that BA wants to fully merge BMI's international routes under it's brand. Domestic and some regional will still be served by BMI. However, it's just rumors. |

Restructuring Civil Aviation to Meet Requirements of ICAO
Khartoum - Deputy Director of the Civil Aviation Authority announced that the authority would be restructured and the monitoring division would be separated from the operational division to meet the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). He said the government has adopted the separation program since it is necessary for reinforcing safety and increasing efficiency, indicating that this has already been started since 2007 and will be finished in 2013. In a press release yesterday, Yousuf confirmed that the main goals of the separation of the two divisions are: to develop and enhance the aviation industry and its global movement, increase the level aeronautical safety and monitoring, and improve airports and run them based on economic principles to benefit from them in improving the entire economy. He pointed out that the divisions –to be separated- are going to become a holding company under the names of: Khartoum Airport Co., State Airports Co., Airport Engineering Co., and Aviation Academy. The management of this holding company will be independent from the government in all aspects, but the government maintains the authority of monitoring. The Deputy Director explained that the civil aviation workers will not be displaced, indicating that early retirement will be allowed and the ones who choose early retirement will be given attractive incentives. He said that the separation process will contribute to the improvement of state airports, enhancement of applying safety and monitoring measures, accelerating the pace of development in states, and increasing economic growth in the country. He said there are 14 airports in Sudan, 8 of which are international airports qualified to receive all kinds of aircrafts, adding that in the future all overland trips will be substituted by air flights between all the states of Sudan. Yousuf confirmed that the reason behind the deterioration of Sudan Airways is the economic embargo imposed on Sudan, explaining that the USA seeks to discriminate between countries in the field of aviation safety. He said that Sudan –despite the restrictions imposed on it- has managed come second in Africa in the field of aviation safety, raising the number of air travelers to 2.8 Million passengers in 2011 compared to 1.5 Million passengers in 2009.
