Where to place airports?

I really like to keep realism in my city, so I don't want to put an airport in the main area of my city. If I put an airport outside of that city, will it also positively affect commercial demand in that city? Also, should I even put an airport in a separate city?

If its in a separate city it doesn't help your city as far as I know. Airports are only needed when commercial zoning is in your city, the more businesses you have, the more the airport is used. So if your airport outside is of the city, your city with businesses will still need it's own airport.

Once you build your airport in your city, the amount of passengers determines when your airport will need a expansion. Ex. If your airport has 259k passengers the transportation guy will tell you to expand the airport or if you want to you can build another airport. In my largest city at one point four airports were in it's city limits because they would be filled and expanded to the max they can go. Now there's only two airports with a third under way so I can get rid of the two maxis Airports.

if you're building a modular airport (TMIP-RMIP/AC/SCAG) piece with realism in mind, it must not be too near tall structures (including the flight paths where the runway is pointing, the flight path to the runway must be clear).

I try to sperate them from the city but keep them close enough so they still have an impact. I also love making Island airports. Here's a few of mine:
