This is a significantly better list. http://homepages.ipact.nl/~egram/skylines.html
It ranks skylines by height and not floor counts, since we all (should) know that residential and office floors are not created equal. It only takes into account buildings higher than 90 meters (~295') and each building is worth 1 point for every meter it is above 90. It gives a much truer comparison of cities' skylines. It is based on 2011 data so not 100% up to date, but probably as good as we will see (and is updated yearly). So, for instance, OKC is ranked 190 with 241 points, but is due an additional 169 points for the Devon Tower (which would jump it all the way to 152 before we take into account other cities' construction). It isn't perfect since it doesn't factor in quality or composition (subjective anyway), but it is based on pure math and the best system I have seen. Miami leads the south with Houston right on its heels (just an 8 point difference, 4991-4983). |

On the other hand, I do believe Miami will separate itself somewhat compared to other US skylines. It's just that the US as a whole is slowly falling behind on the list. |

I wonder why in that list most cities include their suburban skylines (Miami includes Miami Beach, NYC includes Jersey City..etc) but Sunny Isles Beach (#87 in the world) is separate from Miami. Include that as part of "Miami" and Miami moves from #23 to #18 right behind Toronto.

Miami/Sunny Isles seems more like the Minneapolis/St Paul separation. |

I hate to burst your bubble here, but the 4 cities directly above Miami are all CURRENTLY building supertalls that haven't been added to their totals yet. Miami is going to really have to ramp it up, and these cities are going to really have to slow down. The only ones that I could possibly see it catching at any point in the next 5 years are Beijing, Osaka, and Busan, and that's being VERY VERY VERY optimistic for Miami's chances. I would bet my life savings that Miami will not make it back into the teens at any point before, say, 2020. (and more likely, not ever, but don't feel too bad, Boston used to be 24th, as well as much bigger than Miami for a long time, and now I'm hoping it can get back into the 40's) |

The Genting group out of Malaysia still wants to build a very tall luxury condominium complex on the Miami Herald site in spite of the casino bill not passing. They want to make it a supertall, but the FAA won't allow one there because of the proximity to MIA. I think Genting is in the process of negotiating with them for what they will be able to build on the site and we're still waiting to see what they want to do. The Las Vegas Sands, which was interested in putting a casino on the empty lots behind the Biscayne Wall (the four giant condos you see across from the America Airlines Arena during Heat games), didn't hightail it out town when the casino bill didn't pass and have taken a wait-and-see position looks like. There is lots more beyond this planned. We just don't know what's going to make it and what's not, so I've just decided to wait and see what we get between now and when One Bayfront Plaza is completed in 2018. I'm sure at that point, there will be more under construction to be completed between then and 2020 and then we'll see where Miami stands. I might not be here to see it as I've said on another thread, but I'm already seeing a skyline that I never dreamed Miami would have in the nearly 30 years I've lived in South Florida with more under construction even as we speak. I'll probably be around to see Brickell Citicentre completed and 1101 Brickell, but how far beyond that, I don't know.

In the meantime, I hope you have found some other cities to follow outside of Miami. Skyscraper lovers are rewarded on an almost weekly basis with new growth and proposals around the world. (if I only followed Boston, I would be locked in a padded room and never stop crying) I haven't heard of this Brickell Citicentre project. Keep us updated with some photos in the development sections! |

Thanks! Taking it one day at a time at this point, one city at a time, and one project at a time.
