I have no doubt that the growth of internet shopping did have an effect but I've been told that the immediate cause of administration was the bank pulling the plug on the overdraft.

Data: UK retail regions ranked by spend.
Don't know if every thread knows the new CACI report has been published? Quote:

Cardiff's retail offer is greater, the city is larger, the catchment area is bigger, the tourist and visitor numbers would be greater, and the general level of wealth more of less the same (I appreciate Cardiff includes more generally poor areas in the catchment area though) |

Perhaps our retail offering is not as extensive as we thought it was? I think we might get confused between whether or not Cardiff is an attractive retail destination and how much income it actually generates.
I'd argue that it's a lovely place to shop - it's compact, very navigable even for first time visitors, nice mixture between malls, streets and arcades plus there are all the other attractions within the city centre such as the museum, castle, Bute Park etc etc. But the retail spend doesn't seem that far off to me - Brighton and Reading for example are not that much smaller than Cardiff and probably have a similar catchment area and I'd suggest are more affluent. I'm surprised at Milton Keynes but as I have never been there or know next to nothing about it I don't really know why I am surprised. Other than that the other cities higher than Cardiff (discounting the various London areas) include Glasgow, Manchester, Brum, Liverpool, Leeds, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Bristol and Sheffield Meadowhall. The fact that they have a higher retail spend than Cardiff can't come as a surprise surely? |

Nottingham, Newcastle and Sheffield came as a surprise, the others not so much. People in South Wales are generally quite thrifty, preffering a deal over full price from my experiance, regardless of what they earn. While it doesnt represent a great place for people to make lots of money on high end goods, it could mean we have a cheaper standard of living? Items may just be cheaper here, or we have cheaper brands as i doubt we actually buy less than the rest of the country.

I never buy either the Experian or CACI figures. We are not 6th as Experian has Cardiff, but neither are we 24th. I don't believe more is spent at Meadowhall (around 1 million square feet) than in all of Cardiff city centre (around 3 million square feet). In terms of city-centres, I'd guess we are above the following we are listed as being below (this is very unscientific and on a 'gut' feeling):
- Reading - Bristol - Leicester - Kingston - Milton Keynes - Newcastle upon Tyne - Meadowhall I'm not sure about Brighton, Trafford or Bluewater. |

It shouldn't come across as that much of a surprise, surely? Especially as it's ranked according to spend and not the amount of retail space.

Looks like Jane Norman will be relocating at St Davids from the upper mall to the lower mall, with a new planning application online for new store signage for Jane Norman to open in the former Quicksilver unit.
