How does a South African company building a mall in Zimbabwe (that looks like a mall you could find pretty much anywhere in South Africa) make it unique? I'm not saying it isn't, but I don't get the relation?

Did I not just say that "I'm not saying that it isn't [unique]?" I asked what relation his comment had to the mall in question.

Great news Zimbabwe, beutiful renders and the information looks very promising. Proof that the consumer culture is building up again to be quite a force.

The vic falls arent THAT unique. There is Iguacu and Niagra. It has less reosurces than many other African countries, and Monotopwama (or however you spell it) was not the largest old kingdom in Africa.

Lydon and Zimbo,

Butembo want to say that Zimbabwe is so unique in many respects because this country is experiencing, despite economic sanctions, dictatorship, inflation,.....the development of Malls, a better rate and level of education in Africa, very little shantytown, roads and towns in Zimbabwe are clean and beautiful, much better than the democratic and peaceful countries in Africa.

The only reason that good education and roads, and the lack of slums are present, is because these were largely results of the pre-Mugabe's-idiocy regime and before the subsequent sanctions hit. The alleged cleanliness of the tows is something to commend, but I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. The only reason this mall is under construction is because a South African company is building it

Zimbabwe is hardly a bastion of good governance. I see no mention of the massive outbreaks of disease (that South Africa had to step in to fix) or the massive flight of Zimbabweans into South Africa, apart from numerous other issues? The development of a single large mall is hardly a sign of prosperity. At least 10-20 malls of a similar size are rising in South Africa as we speak.

Thus, as I just said, I'm not sure how the development of this mall in any way makes Zimbabwe unique?

Let's not get sidetracked here, but to clear things up he said 'unique in many ways' which wasn't referring to the mall. If you have a problem with that take it up with the original poster over PM or something.

And Butembo you seem to be a master at the one sentence response that gets everybody discussing something.

In the mall thread. Making it seem like the mall has something to do with it. Which is my question, not all of the above...

in reply to Popa as it seems he may not know a few facts. The Vic Falls is the widest falling sheet of water in the world when in full flood and is twice as long as Niagra and one and half times higher than Niagra...hence its classified as one on natural wonders of the world. Also Great Zimbabwe ruins is the largest ancient kingdom in sub-saharan Africa (please note sub saharan Africa) its classified as a world heritage site. Read about it on internet if you dont believe me. Lydon mentioned the out break of diseases which was bad and stil a risk. May I just remind Lydon that South Africa Govt at that time approved the rigged elections and still refuse to release the report so a good chunk of our down fall, south africa (gvt) aided by not standing up for what was right and in the end South africa has made alot of money out of Zim plight and gained many of the educated work force legal or not. Zimbabwe has lots of natural resources and for its small population its ample except the corruption is rife. We have second largest reserves of platinum after South Africa and our is closer to the surface, we have emeralds, diamonds, lots gold 6th largest producer when we were a normal country in the world, ample coal reserves, chrome, asbestos, tin and list goes on. Back to topic...it is good news that Zim is getting this mall built and will boost employment which is badly needed and raise standards as its been a decade of hell in Zim so good to have things taking a turn. Just need free and fair elections if so we good to get back on track where we should be. So lets hope they start the mall soon.

None of that has anything to do with my question, but anyway

I have a problem with that bolded part. SA is not responsible for Zimbabwe and it did not facilitate the rigging of any election, that was done solely by Zanu-pf. It's unfortunate but Zimbos are generally docile creatures, and Mugabe is taking advantage of that to the max. Secondly SA might have gained educated workforce, but it also gained the criminal element, the blind (can be seen at almost every traffic intersection in SA), the diabled, the unemployed, the illetirate etc as well. So don't make it seem like SA prefers this current situation, Zim's collapse has cost us dearly..

And why has S.Africa done so little to deal with the problem other then sending Mbeki for a quick fix to merely postpone the problem and hope Mugabe's ticker stops ticking before another election?
