Colleges pool in 380 more medical seats

BANGALORE: Here's some cheery news for medical seat aspirants. An additional 380 seats are up for grabs for MBBS for the academic year 2012-13, taking the total number of medical seats available in the state to 5,935.

There are two new medical colleges for Karnataka - ESI Medical College, Bangalore, with 100 seats and Tadikele Subbaiah Trust, Shimoga, with 150 seats. The others are Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore (increase of 50 seats), Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore (up by 30) and Navodaya Medical College, Raichur (up by 50 seats).

The tally: government seats 1,350; ComedK (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges- Karnataka) 1,545; KRLMPCA (Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minorities Private Colleges' Association) 1,460; and deemed universities 1,580.

As many as 2,222 seats are available for Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) counselling, for which the verification is in progress. Students will have 914 seats to choose through ComedK counselling, 1,084 through KRLMPCA and 1,428 through deemed universities, besides an all-India quota.

The number of BDS seats will remain the same at 2,990. Of these, 875 are government seats.

UPGRADING COLLEGES

The government has sent a proposal to the Centre to upgrade all medical colleges into research centres. The project is worth Rs 1,275 crore. The state has suggested a 80:20 ratio for sharing of funds. The state also proposes to introduce a trauma and disaster management centre on the lines of AIIMS Delhi, worth Rs 280 crore, in Bangalore Medical College.

It has also proposed an increase in intake at Mysore Medical College, KIMS, Hubli, and Bellary Medical College. An increase in seats for clinical PG programmes has also been sought. The proposal to start a hospital management PG course in medical colleges has been submitted to the finance department.

The counselling dates have been arranged such that seat blocking is impossible. Last year, there were many instances of students from Rajasthan, Bihar and Delhi submitting fake marks cards. This time at the ComedK counselling centre, a government representative, a legal adviser and police officials will be present. A single man monitoring committee will oversee the process. P Venkataramaiah, former V-C, Kuvempu University, will be the member. There will be complete transparency in all the counseling.

Hassan to get country’s first bio fuel bunk

Karnataka is all set to open the country’s first bio-fuel distribution bunk of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd in Hassan. Speaking at an event organised by the State Biofuel Development Board on Thursday, its Executive Chairman Y.B. Ramakrishna said, “We have several biofuel-related projects going on. We already have a Green Fuel Park at Madenur village, which produces about 300 litres of biofuel and Bharat Petroleum will open a green fuel outlet within the next three months in Hasan”.

Stating that there is vast scope for producing bio fuel in the country, Mr Ramakrishna said the Centre should come out with a bio fuel policy which can not only address fuel needs, but also save crores in foreign exchange which is spent on import of crude oil.

Xchanging to hire 3,000 in Shimoga

IT services and BPO firm Xchanging said on Saturday it will hire 3,000 employees for its Shimoga centre by the end of 2013. The company, which caters to companies in insurance, healthcare and banking sectors, has also tied up with education institutions here to tap the local human resource. Xchanging said it would introduce certificate programme in BPO operations and software development in collaboration with Kuvempu University from this academic year.

Xchanging, which started its operations in the city with 20 employees in 2007, has 600 employees now.

Keeping with the pace of expansion, the company said it is shifting to a bigger campus in the Shimoga IT Special Economic Zone. The new delivery and procession centre of Xchanging, spread across 6.5 acres, will be inaugurated on July 11.

The new building can accommodate 1,200 employees, said Subrahmanya Basavanahalli, head of Xchanging’s Shimoga centre. He said Xchanging has 50 processing and delivery centres in 10 countries now.Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Chairperson of State Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy,

Residents oppose proposal to build TTMC at old bus-stand

Only 25 p.c. of the area should be used for commercial purposes and the rest for passenger-friendly bus service’



Residents have opposed the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation’s (KSRTC) proposal to develop the old bus-stand here into a Transport Transit Management Centre (TTMC), with more space allotted for commercial purposes.

In a public hearing on the issue here on Friday, shopkeepers, by and large, opposed the blueprint of the project and urged the KSRTC to alter it to accommodate more buses.

Using the space

Soon after the new bus-stand was constructed on the outskirts of the city, the KSRTC reserved the old bus-stand for city buses and those commuting to rural areas within 40 km radius from Hassan town. The corporation decided to construct a TTMC at the old bus-stand to make use of the available 4.5 acres for generating revenue.

KSRTC Divisional Commissioner Santhosh Kumar Shetty explained the proposed project. The design included provision for parking in the ground floor, bus bays, administrative office, waiting area, restroom, cloakroom, first-aid facility, shops and kiosks. The public, after going through the blueprint, pointed out that there was more space allotted for commercial purposes than for the bus terminal. They demanded that only 25 per cent of the area be used for commercial purposes and the rest be used for passenger-friendly bus service. City Municipal Council president C.R. Shankar also supported the public stating that the land was originally granted by the CMC. “The land was granted with the purpose of [setting up a] bus-stand. The KSRTC should utilise it for the same [purpose],” he said.

Depot plans

Praja Vedike president V.S. Veerabhadrappa said the KSRTC earlier adopted a resolution to develop a depot at the old bus-stand. But in the court, the corporation filed an affidavit stating it would construct a TTMC.

Public opinion

H.S. Prakash, MLA, who presided over the meeting, told officers to convey the public’s opinion to their seniors before taking a decision. He also maintained that private players must not be allowed to take over the bus-stand.
