Nature in Maramureș

Maramureș, an isolated land of mountains, little known even inside Romania, hides many treasures. These photos are actually from Maramureș County, which beside the (Romanian part of) Land of Maramureș, includes other historical-ethnographical lands: Lăpuș, Chioar and eastern part of Sătmar Comitatus (Baia Mare area).

Jiu Defile National Park - Locurele Hermitage

More photos from my trip last week.

Locurele Hermitage, dependence of Lainici Monastery, is situated at 750 m altitude. It was founded in 1849 on a place inhabited by hermits since 14th century.

It is at the edge of a large clearing, a fairy tale beautiful and quiet place.

Jiu Defile National Park - the Railway

After walking 18 km along the defile taking photos from road level, I took back the train, now taking shots from the height of the railway.

The railway was built in two stages, first between 1923-1944 (8 km) and the the second between 1945-1948, the so-called "Building site of the Youth" being a propaganda action of the newly installed Communist power, where people of "unhealthy social origin" where working "voluntary" to demonstrate their adhesion to the new social order.

With over 50 tunnels, viaducts and bridges, it is one of most spectacular in country.

Maramureș- land of ancestral traditions

Maramureș, the most archaic and best preserved etnografic region of Europe, is a world of a very particular culture. The songs, costumes, architecture are very different even from neighbouring zones and they have a deep, ancestral vibe.

Many Jews fleeing the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (as well as other Habsburg areas) from intense persecution and anti-Semitism during the Middle Ages settled in Rădăuţi. The community was allowed a degree of self-administration, and witnessed a period of prosperity and cultural effervescence during the 19th century.

The majority of Rădăuţi's Jewish population was exterminated during the Holocaust. Persecutions became widespread around 1938, when Jews were harassed and attacked by authorities under the Octavian Goga government; they were confirmed by anti-Semitic legislation passed by the Ion Gigurtu cabinet, and, in late 1940, exceptionally violent following the establishment of the National Legionary State. In October 1941, all Jews present in Rădăuţi (more than 10,000) were deported to concentration camps in Transnistria.

The Great Temple was built in 1883.
