They definitely won't use traditional steel in the far future. Technology is moving ahead and today's technology might be ancient past in a century or two

I'm working on a Science fiction book idea about a alien race called the Gull Coo building a giant star ship in the shape of a super oil tanker that is eight miles long and a mile by a mile across.

How they build giant alien ship is they build it in a spot in their solar system where there tons of giant iron rich giant astorids and they build a ship base around one of the larger ones. During a time frame of ten years tens of thousands of them along with at least 400 to 500 smaller intellgent robotic space ships called Ring Necks that help them build by collecting metal and other things for it. Also half of the metal used in the ship comes from smaller older star ships that where kitbased into the new larger ship in that unlike human metal which rusts the alien metal doesn't so it could be hunderds of years old and could be reused over and over again in several generations of space ships.
