Agree. Comparing it now to then, one gets the distinct impression that some clown was given license to over engineer this space (and he did it in spades). Really sad. Why couldn't they have just left well enough alone!

Well, you managed to change the subject. You mean starving the 800 lb. guy too big to get in or out the door? The one who grabs everything in sight and provides no services? My sense is that the federal budget increases every decade for 200 years plus. If that's starving, sign me up.

Back to Pershing Sq. In general, the problem is not the square, it's the people around it (same issue as in the housing projects). Better to focus money on making the 'hood desirable for people to live in than to worry about the park.

Have you noticed that the population continues to increase too?? I wonder if there is a correlation? And of course the government has to make up for all of the millions that have fallen through the cracks when the cracks were deliberately placed decades ago. Should have done it right the first time. If you say wanted an equitable society then you should have made it equitable. Then you wouldn't have to be running around plugging up holes and deflecting blame. No one's fault but your own. This country has risen upon it and will be destroyed with it.

There is another discussion thread based on an article arguing (among other things) that building new housing projects is not the solution; changing the social habits within the projects is better advised. By analogy, improving the 'hood around Pershing Sq. may do more for the park than rebuilding it one more time.

There is nothing wrong with "the hood" surrounding Pershing. What? The Biltmore? The Jewelry District? Pershing is a manifestation of all that is wrong with the idea of starving the government. Of course, folks want to starve the government only after they've been properly fed. Case in point, the only thing that kept food on the table in the Reagan household during the Great Depression was the $$ coming from his alcoholic father's WPA "socialist" job handed out by FDR.
What a bunch of gun toting cowardly hypocrites.

OK; Pershing Sq. is a great area. Always has been.

What would make Pershing square better is if it gets redeveloped, like make it a park like plaza, with a monument of an angel at it's center, like the angel of independence in Mexico city.

What in the world happened to the Temple Baptist Church Building across the street from Pershing Square? It's now a big empty lot.

Demolished in the 80s for a large mix-use complex that never happened. Then was supposed to be Park Fifth, which also never happened. And now, who knows.
