Battle of brains at TechTop

While the nation is concerned about the ever-increasing prices of fuel and demand for fossil fuels, N. Krishnan and his team find bio-diesel as a solution to the present crisis.

Their experimental work resulted in the production of bio-diesel samples from used cooking oil, which earned them a spot among the final set of teams competing at the TechTop 2012 — an annual national-level innovation contest for engineering students, which is being held at the Technopark here.

Executive vice-president of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai inaugurated the exhibition organised jointly by the Technopark Technology Business Incubator (T-TBI) and Degree Controls (India) here on Thursday.

The event saw the participation of 15 shortlisted teams from across the country.

Some projects aimed at providing technological solutions to a number of environmental problems were showcased. The plastic segregator using tribo-electrostatic separation, designed by the students of Amrita College of Engineering, Kollam, is one among them.

It has been presented as a solution to tackle the issue of plastic menace. The contest also has a few Information Communications Technology (ICT) projects aimed at empowering the differently-abled people and assisting older people.

The best projects selected will be eligible for incubation support from T-TBI and the winner will take home a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh .

This is the trick to privatise KSEB.
If no more current is available for offices,....do we need a minister for such a department. At least they can save current for his office.

Why don't Kerala government take initiative to claim their share of power generated at Koodankulam using Monazite Sand of south kerala beaches ??

Solar power cannot meet the concentrated power demand of commercial real estate. It's more a gimmick than anything else, especially in view of how many cloudy days a location like Kerala tends to have.

What we need is distributed generation with campus-scale generation facilities run as Independent Power Producers.

Power generation at source is a good idea. But it is suitable for low tension consumers like houseolds......

One way is to have a solar energy farm in a particular place and feed the energy from it to the city's power grid.....It is high time that Govts. of states of this part of the World stick to a policy of having one solar panel per house hold depending on the annual income of households......

WE ARE REALLY FOOLS IF WE DID NOT START SUCH A SCHEME IN NEAR FUTURE THAN LATER IN VIEW OF THIS NATION WIDE ENERGY CRISIS......

WHAT IS THE USE OF HAVING TALL CLAIMS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND HIGH EDUCATION IF WE DONT KNOW SUCH A BASIC THING????

WHY NOT IMMEDIATE RESEARCH IS CARRIED TO INCREASE THE EFFECIANCY OF SOLAR CELLS RATHER THAN CITE IT AS A REASON FOR NOT USING THEM???

WE NEED NOT HAVE ROCKET SCIENCETO UNDERSTAND THAT INDIA, AND MORE SPECIFICALLY KERALA, HAS ATLEAST 75% OF THE DAYS SUNNY IN A YEAR WHICH IS MORE THAN SUFFICIENT TO HAVE SOLAR ENERGY PLANTS......

IF WE START THINKING IN THESE LINES, WE WILL GET MANY IDEAS TO IMPLEMENT.....

PLEASE DO START DOING ANYTHING IN THIS REGARD (RATHER THAN SHARING THE GLORIES OF ABDUL KALAM IN FACEBOOK AND NOT FOLLOWING HIM AT ALL!!!!)

SO LET US THINK ABOUT KUDANKULAM AFTER THE STAE MEETS ATLEAST ANOTHER 20% DEMAND BY SOLAR POWER!!!!

JAI HIND.........

Yes,Captive Powerplants are becoming popular in Power Shortage states of Tamil Nadu,Maharashtra,....
Tamil Nadu is giving some subsidy to Industries having its own power generation facility.

Capital Investment may be high initially. But it has advantage of uninterrupted power supply.KSEB supply should remain as 100% standby to meet any emergency demand like generator fuel shortage.(Installation of 6 DGs of 2.5 Megawatts can easily generate the power for entire Technopark (TP-I,II and III).Captive power can be cheaper in some cases while it can go upto 40% in some cases. At the current fuel prices,it can generate power at Rs 6 - 8/unit.
Land requirement will be 3-5 acres.

Alternately, there are other private power trading companies like Power Exchange India which trades electricity.

Just another example (bit old,but good concept):

Solar power may not may not be enough to meet the entire power requirements of a commercial building but we should still promote setting up rooftop solar power generation units on big building. It will help them to generate a part of their energy requirements. This would eventually help to increase the share of renewable energy in the total power generated by the state.
Cloudy days may not be a big problem for solar power generation. Considering our tropical location, the total amount of luminescence received is quite lucrative for power generation.
I agree that installing solar power on top of IT buildings does not solve the problem in hand completely. For this we need an increase in power generation at a larger scale. But I wouldn't call installation of rooftop solar power generation as a gimmick. It has its share of benefits.

Even is western Europe, the installation of rooftop solar panels for houses help them to bring down the electricity expenses considerably.

Top IT firms to get notices soon

The city corporation has decided to issue notices to IT firms at the Technopark, including TCS, IBS and Infosys, for defaulting on their taxes.

The companies in question have not settled their tax dues despite issue of several notices, say corporation officials. “This time they will be given 15 days to settle their tax arrears. If they fail to pay up they will invite strict action under the municipal act,” warns Tax Appeal Committee chairman, P. Shyam Kumar. Although several companies have appealed to the government for changes in the tax assessment done, the corporation has received no word yet from it regarding this, according to him.

The authorities at the technopark claim the companies are willing to pay their tax dues provided the assessment done by the civic authorities is corrected. “While the law exempts parking lots from the tax, they have also been taken into consideration along with the buildings, which is unacceptable,” says senior manager, business development, M Vasudevan.
