In an earlier discussion, it was questioned why such a huge tall office structure is being built in Osaka as opposed to Tokyo which economically is a more natural city, also being the capital. I read that the developer also owns the old building/land where this is being build. Could this be a Kansai vs Kanto rivalry thing? I mean old-rich Kansai wants to outdo what the Mori family are doing in Tokyo...

It does indeed looks like that.

This tower only got the the 300m height to become the tallest tower in Japan. Political strings were pulled to reduce the airport height restriction zone to make this tower possible. It's the local Kintetsu railway company that is the developer of this tower and not one of the big developers. Kintetsu will take more pride in building the tallest tower of Japan in Osaka then one of the developers that operate nationwide.

I don't think that it's specifically old money vs. new money since I believe it's more in competition with all the developers, Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, etc. and not specifically with Mori Building. So I would just say that old Kansai money wants to outdo Tokyo with this tower.

It is a very good looking complex anyway, wherever they built this. For us aficionados, I guess we admire such projects for the physicality rather than the politics of it. Thanks again, Momo.

The glass looks good from close up but just ok from afar, but I'm glad to see it get taller it makes the building more balanced

The construction has reached the last phase of growth. The lasted addition is the first steel for the observation deck floors that will just be full floors at one side of the tower and an atrium for the most part. See the pictures below.
