I think the area can be vastly improved for now by some easy and cheap solutions. Firstly, restrict car access (unbelievable that cars are still allowed on the whole wharf, nearly got bowled over by an SUV yesterday when walking alongside the cloud). Secondly, the area at the back of the cloud just screams café... And thirdly, landscaping, any landscaping, pot plants (although not a fan of them) hedges or whatever to break the greyness...

I agree. They need a grassy area at the end of the wharf. Somewhere to go and have lunch and look back at the city or out to the harbour.

Auckland to host cloud computing conference next week

Security vendor Trend Micro will hold its EVOLVE. Cloud security event for both corporate end users and channel partners later this month. Part of a highly successful seven-city road show across Australia and New Zealand, the conference brings together industry experts, government speakers, and global authorities to discuss the major issues in cloud and virtualisation security. It is being held at the Hilton Hotel on Auckland's waterfront and is free to attend. It's being held 14th August in Auckland. The event features thought leaders from analyst Frost & Sullivan, VMware, the Cloud Security Alliance, Government leaders, and independent cloud analyst Rob Livingstone, as well as major ecosystem players such as VMware, IBM, Datacom, Gen-I and Amazon Web Services.

The video portrays a fashion show, art exhibition, conference and a concert. Does this imply that the Cloud's functions are moving into Shed 10? What about the Viaduct Events Centre?

I can imagine the Shed being partitioned into temporary spaces; makeshift basketball courts, remote control car racing track, rentable performance areas, studios for art, workshops for crafts & projects, band practice...a kind of 'social incubator' project aka community centre.

That's, of course, depending on whether a permanent farmers & craft market is not viable for Shed 10. I still think that would be great (and actually compatible with the community centre idea).

I agree that a farmers market would be amazing. In winter you have shelter and in summer you could set out chairs, some BBQs, provide a bit of live music. It could be a unique experience to actually encourage people to cook outside.

There was a "gastro-style pub" (which was better described as a seven day a week speciality food offering) proposed for a heritage building on the waterfront in Wellington.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post...-Shed-35-alive

The concept could work at Shed 10 - except it will be inaccessible for 100 days a year, which is how many times they expect ship visits in future, isn't it?

Bledisloe Cup Experience at The Cloud

It's rugby-central this Saturday down on Queens Wharf, with family festivities and live rugby action. From 2pm to 6pm there's Rippa Rugby, a host of kids activities, massive inflatable fun, face painting and festivities, a repeat screening of the first encounter last weekend in Sydney, food & beverages, prizes and an opportunity to meet some rugby stars. Take along a gold coin donation to help Cure Kids' Red Nose Day appeal in collaboration with Waterfront Auckland and the New Zealand Rugby Union. Closer to game time, The Cloud becomes your waterfront lounge and a family friendly option to watch the big game. With plenty of space and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s a fun way to watch the rugby in a family friendly, alcohol free environment. The game kicks off at 7.35 so head down to The Cloud from 6.30pm to nab your spot. A range of food and drink vendors will be onsite for snacks or dinner. So head on down to The Cloud and experience the excitement as we head towards the most anticipated game since the All Blacks won Rugby World Cup 2011.

QUEENS WHARF KIOSK OPENS

The journey for Queens Wharf from a working wharf to a public wharf took another step forward this month with the opening of the Queens Wharf Kiosk. Using a similar treatment to the popular Karanga Plaza Kiosk in Wynyard Quarter, the new kiosk has been designed to serve as a hub for information on Queen’s Wharf. The kiosk will serve as a port of call for people seeking information on what’s happening on Queens Wharf, cruise timetables, development, and general history. Staffed by the friendly hosts that manage the Karanga Kiosk it is open to the public seven days and currently manned Thursdays through Sunday.

The two container high kiosk is lined with information panels that tell a story from the working days of Queen’s Wharf through to its transformation today into a shared public space. The first stage of development on the 2.7ha wharf at the foot of Queen Street was completed in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011. This saw the construction of The Cloud, an upgrade to the ground floor of Shed 10 and the wharf utilities and services. The opening of the kiosk is timely with the refurbishment of Shed 10 on Queens Wharf programmed to commence mid September. The upgrade and new kiosk addition has helped move the wharf towards its ultimate destiny as a high-quality cruise terminal, major event space and impressive public area; reflecting Auckland and New Zealand’s culture and heritage.

Deadline tight for ship terminal completion

Auckland authorities say they will have a $14.6 million passenger ship terminal finished by next April, at the end of this summer's cruise season. Work on renovating the century-old Shed 10 on Queen's Wharf will start next week. "It's tight but it's do-able," said Rod Marler, Waterfront Auckland's development general manager. This summer will be the biggest cruise season yet with more than 100 ship visits and a 19 per cent increase in the number of passengers to 206,000. It is estimated last summer the cruise industry generated almost $270 million which was pumped into the Auckland economy and 1550 jobs were created. Waterfront Auckland - an Auckland Super City council-controlled organisation - said the challenge had been to preserve the historic features of the building while accommodating other uses such as a function venue ... Sustainable city pops up in Auckland for three-day showcase

Visitors can take a tour through a sustainable pop-up city to view and interact with the latest designs, products and technology at the Sustainable City Showcase on 22-24 November at The Cloud on Queen’s Wharf, Auckland. The Showcase, which is organised by the Sustainable Business Network (SBN), and supported by Waterfront Auckland, is open to the public and entry is free. CEO of the SBN Rachel Brown says that the Sustainable City Showcase is a unique opportunity to experience the latest thinking in sustainable living. “120 businesses and innovators will come together under one roof to create a buzzing marketplace, cleverly arranged into zones of a sustainable city,” she says. “We’re really excited about being able to inspire and educate visitors with the large number of very practical and inspirational solutions that already exist. Together the exhibitors, which include business solution providers, Council and community organisations, show that sustainable cities are a practical option for New Zealand. Whether you’re interested in travel, food, fashion, homes or workplaces, come and check out these exciting sustainable options.” .... MORE

Aucklanders' plea: Give us back our waterfront

More than three-quarters of Aucklanders questioned in a Herald poll want more wharf space opened up to create world-class public areas on the waterfront. Local authorities have responded by saying bringing Aucklanders to the harbour area around the end of Queen St will be the next chapter in the city's development. A thousand Herald readers have given their views on the waterfront, presenting a wide range of ideas that reflect their pride in the Waitemata Harbour. Ninety-six per cent of respondents said the waterfront was important for the city. The Herald today starts a five-part series investigating options for a more vibrant, people-friendly waterfront. Tourism Industry Association chief executive Martin Snedden, who oversaw last year's Rugby World Cup tournament, said this was the city's chance to get it right. "Right here, right now, Auckland has a wonderful waterfront opportunity," he said. It needed people's support to give it "character, heart and buzz" ... MORE

World's best harbour - just add people

The first chapter in Auckland's waterfront renaissance was the America's Cup and Viaduct Harbour, just over a decade ago. Chapter two was Wynyard Quarter, which opened successfully last year. "Chapter three is those central wharves and how we can take Aucklanders back to the water," said Ludo Campbell-Reid, Auckland Council's environmental strategy and policy-planning manager. "It's not world-renowned - yet. But with its renaissance you could start to see quite a dramatic place emerge." Mr Campbell-Reid spoke to the Herald following a survey of 1000 readers who said they wanted more of the waterfront opened up to them. Seventy-seven per cent said they wanted to see more wharf space, while 62 per cent didn't think Queens Wharf was being used as an attractive space. "Auckland desperately needs an iconic focal point on our beautiful harbour," said Rebecca Russo. "With imagination we could make the wharf area so much more attractive," said Jane Malone. "Auckland has one of the most beautiful harbours in the world and I'd really like to see the waterfront opened up more to public use. I'd like to see the city look towards the harbour, not back on itself," said Marion Dixon ... MORE

Space the final frontier in bid to make Queens Wharf a bigger draw

Waterfront Auckland has released its "placemaking" ideas for Queens Wharf, a set of temporary activities to make the large area an active space. "Wynyard Quarter has its public piano, workshops and other activities, and we're applying that same approach [to Queens Wharf]. We're considering anything from barbecues on the end of the wharf, foosball tables, activities, more street furniture out front," said spokesman Luke Henshall. Queens Wharf already had two events venues - the Cloud and Shed 10 - and the "placemaking" ideas were targeted at the open space in between. General manager of development Rod Marler said the agency had begun experimenting at the recent Volvo Ocean Race, when greenery was brought in. "It was a good opportunity to test how people would use that space, and it was very successful for visitors to gather and office workers to eat their lunches there. It sparked some other ideas on how we could use that space even in a temporary way." ... MORE
