A nearly 330-foot-long section of a ramp of the eight-lane Yangmingtan Bridge in the city of Harbin dropped 100 feet to the ground. Four trucks plummeted with it, resulting in three deaths and five injuries.

The 9.6-mile bridge is one of three built over the Songhua River in that area in the past four years.

I doubt the drop was "100 feet" (30 meters). Compare the section that tipped over to the rest of the still standing highway. The tipped over section appears to be only two lanes and a partial shoulder wide, thus perhaps 30 feet (9 meters) wide at best and it's not even at a 90 degree angle, yet it appears as wide as the highway is tall. If the highway were 100 feet up, then the highway would dwarf the tipped over section.

That's what happens when morons drive a 400% overloaded truck onto the outward lane of an elevated road with center support pillar.

The ramp was designed by Harbin Municipal Engineering Design Institute, constructed by Fujian Jiaojian Group Engineer Co, Ltd. and overlooked by Heilongjiang Baixin Construction Engineering Supervision Co, Ltd., said Huang Yusheng, secretary-general of the Harbin municipal government.

Huang reiterated that the ramp had no direct relationship with the main body of the Yangmingtan Bridge.

He said the collapse of the ramp had little effect on the viaduct, where traffic had resumed.

Harbin, China

Bridge open in November 2011

Quote:
HARBIN - Three people were killed and five others injured early Friday morning after four trucks they were travelling aboard plunged off a collapsed bridge in a northeast China city, police sources said.

The accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. when the approach ramp of the Yangmingtan Bridge spanning over the Songhua River collapsed in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province.

The 15.4-km long bridge was open to traffic in November last year. The collapsed part, which measures 100 meters in length, fell from a height of 30 meters.

Does China has a requirement for every 18 wheelers or big truck to be weighted at special weight station so each big truck driver know the exact weight of their truck? Here in the USA, there are weight station for big truck and there are sign for bridge capacity so the truck drivers know before driving on such as bridge. I hope that investigation are done on such as bridge.
How many Chinese bridge has fallen on this year so far?

I believe on some sections of the highway there are weight stations, and police do conduct random weight checks to discourage overloading trucks. However the practice is so rampant that there is virtually no way to stop it effectively. Pretty much all trucks go over the load limit in China, if you don't then you'll lose business or profit. The vast majority of those bridge "collapses" are actually the city's elevated road viaducts and they often endure many times their design capacity everyday. Traffic police rarely do weight checks on city roads.

I have heard that it is easy to get a drivers license over in China. I think because of its easy-to-get drivers license resulted with people have no discipline and well trained in driving are the major source of cause to the problem. also they cut corners in constructions.

Driver's license is not so easy to get now but you are right, driving manner and discipline in China is very bad, even under strict penalties.

Well driving skill is not the problem, it's the practice to overload the trucks way beyond its designed capacity. There are trucks designed to carry 60t of cargo but were caught carrying 200t. The Harbin bridge collapsed because three of the four trucks on there carried a total of more than 400t of cargo. Trucking companies and drivers are under intensive pressure to carry more cargo to generate profit, so as long as Chinese transportation authority doesn't step up law enforcement efforts in that field I don't see the situation improve any time soon.
