Sorry for OT, but I'd like to know roughly how big the urban area of Shanghai is, and how many people live there. Shanghai municipality exceeds 600 km^2 and has over 23 million inhabitants, but I've read that 13 million people live in the actual "city" (urban area).
The urban parts of the municipality seem very dense, but the municipality as a whole has only 3600 people per km^2 according to Wikipedia (not a good source, of course). Does Shanghai municipality include some rural areas? I'm guessing some parts of Chongming County are rural, due to the low population density of that county. Are Shanghai's suburbs usually built as a continuation of the existing urban area, or further away so that they are technically not part of the urban area but part of the municipality? Are there any former villages inside Shanghai municipality which are now commuter areas? I read a comparison between Shanghai's and London's public transport systems. The author claimed that while Shanghai has the world's largest (and very rapidly expanding) underground system, the railway network mostly concentrates on long-distance locations such as Nanjing. I'd interpret this as there being quite vast rural areas between the major cities (Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Nanjing...) of this area of China, with some traditional villages but without significant amounts of "traditional villages turned commuter villages". Of course, when including these cities we are talking about an area much larger than Shanghai municipality. Thanks to anyone trying to answer these questions. Hopefully I'm making myself somewhat understood.EDIT: This report (https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q...HUHvdZHp_uBQYg, page 1) claims that 13% of Shanghai municipality's area is urban and that 13 million people live in the urban area. This gives an urban population density of 13 million / (6340.5 * 0.13); about 15,772 people per square kilometre. For the rest of the municipality, we have a population density of 10 million / (6340.5 * 0.87), which is around 1813 people per square kilometre. Last edited by GSAA; August 25th, 2012 at 03:13 AM. |

I guess it is crucial to know exactly how old the data is in that case study. Shanghai has been growing quite fast over the past two decades so anything older than 2-3 years may significantly distort any idea of the population.
Although I guess you're right about the developments that are disconnected from the main urban area. This seems to be a norm in China and it used to be a norm in, for instance, Soviet Union where they used to build entire districts somewhat far away from the urban core. In some cases with forest or just empty fields inbetween. Anyway this is an interesting question and I'd like to see a comprehensive answer to it too.

For example, Kunshan is a big satellite city between Suzhou and Shanghai, and both the Beijing - Shanghai & Nanjing - Shanghai high speed rail lines top there. And I believe many people commute to Shanghai from there, it's only around one hour by buss and 20 minutes by train from Shanghai. Also I think in the future Suzhou and Shanghai metro lines will join in Kunshan making it even more convenient for commuters. I think it's more true for Beijing than Shanghai; Beijing is surrounded by just farmland and the outlying towns are too disconnected for daily Beijing commutes. |

It should be Friendship Building 联谊大厦 phase II, which looks like Rockfeller Building in NYC.
