I like the way they've kept the pub, nice touch.

The famous Twisted Wheel Night Club is being demolished to make way for the Hotel. Been a bit of an uproar in Manchester about that.

good news. 42 storeys will be a nice addition to the skyline over there.

does that mean something will be happening to those concrete skeletons that have laid untouched the past few years as well?

I agree, the nice old pub seems to assist the new development to sit more comfortably on the streetscape.................... or am I talking crap?

Would they be able to use the same foundations as the ill-fated hotel? Or would they not support a 42 storey?

These new images give further insight into how Manchester’s planned 42-storey skyscraper by the man behind the Beetham Tower will look.

The M.E.N revealed that architect Ian Simpson has submitted plans for a second tower next to the Mancunian Way in Manchester city centre.

The River Street scheme, which would house up to 600 serviced apartments, would stand less than half a mile from the Beetham Tower, on Deansgate – the city’s tallest building.

Among the new pictures, Ian Simpson Architects have released a new, more dramatic image of the new 410ft block, showing how it might look at nightfall.

The as-yet unnamed landmark, which will be five floors lower than Beetham and has a similar glazed design, will provide accommodation targeted at short-stay professionals visiting the city on business.

Simpson, who also designed Urbis, Number One Deansgate and the new arts centre at First Street, is working with British firm, Chelmer Developments, who acquired the site in April 2011. If planning permission is granted, it will replace an unsightly concrete frame that has occupied the spot for the past decade and is covered in graffiti.

Ian Simpson’s Beetham Tower, which is 554ft high and contains the Hilton hotel and apartments, became Europe’s tallest residential building when it was completed in 2006.

At the time plans for the new tower were revealed, Mr Simpson told the M.E.N: "I think it’s a simple, very elegant and slender building with a glass surface so it will pick up reflections from the light and I think it will be quite dramatic. I just think it will be a really great place for people to stay and live in the short term, literally just a 12 minute walk from the centre of Deansgate.

"This is part of a collection of buildings standing together to the south of the Hilton and along the ring road. It will be quite a marker and I think it will complement the Hilton well.

"It’s also an important part of announcing First Street and the cultural quarter – it is all part of marking that as a place of change and regeneration."

That'll be the "business rooms" the people at the exhibition all those months ago were talking about. They're for local residents to rent out for events and things

Mmmmmmm slab! These guy's are pretty serious about developing this then?

I really like the box/slab style Manchester has, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but if projects like the Piccadilly tower ever see the light of day, they will really cement a dwindling NYC tried-and-trusted international style of architecture.

The way the towers are generally in the periphery of the city centre, it's almost like the city is going to be one very large Stonehedge soon!

Still a hint of pessimism in me, but I think it has a chance.

I and a few other forum members went to the exhibition for this a few months back and the developers seem confident, the council planners seemed confident.. it all seemed very legit.
