I'm thoroughly impressed.

Although with that amount of commie blocks and neon lights, Pyongyang looks more like a Chinese city than a south Korean one.

Mr.Kim's wife is pretty tho.

That's what I've thought too when I first saw Pyongyang from the pictures...

Also, it seems so orderly...

This new leader will make this nation more prosporus. I saw some immages on tv of a lot of western brands and symbolds used in NK in the last months. I think now that NK will slowly open its doors to the world.

North Korea,A Country with many potential, bottled by fear, oppresion and autocratic rule.If Kim Jong-Un opens up this country i can just imagine how prosperous it will be.
In the meantime,Outside of the glass facade,The Happy faces, the Pompous Propaganda it's just a fake expressionism by some egomaniacs.

I hope it will happen as soon as possible.
And maybe it will change slowly, but I think it will happen with the new leader.
Maybe because Un had seen more from the world.

North Korea is more than Pyongyang

I am the photographer of the photos that Seaniscoming posted. I go to the DPRK each year. While there is optimism I have to remind you that most all of North Korea is developing and looks far different than Pyongyang.

The photo below was taken on the east coast in a remote area.

The DPRK has not followed normal patterns of urbanization. Indeed it appears there are large numbers of people living along the east coast that would have migrated to the cities in most other nations. Those in the countryside are able to eat while those in larger towns are vulnerable to food problems.

I think Pyongyang and what most tourists see is atypical of the country. Many in the DPRK lead fairly normal lives but some areas such as Chongjin and Haeju are suffering because the country cannot move resources easily. Transportation is in crisis. In some areas wood-gas vehicles are seen in large numbers.

Tractors are in short supply and most of them are in poor condition.

Tourists do see newer tractors on some farms but they are rare in the country as a whole.

Rural North Korea looks like parts of rural China. While we see the Ryugyong Hotel and the recent construction boom, I do have to tell you that many of the apartments are unfinished. Buildings are sometimes empty but the outside is finished. Apartment dwellers in many cities are hauling water up to their apartments. The photo below shows a common well at an apartment house in Nampo.

I recommend a trip to North Korea but try to take a longer tour. You get a better sense of the society by visiting more parts of the country.

Well there is one sad truth tho, outside of the capital city that looks developped very well, NK is like a third world country with a population living in big poverty. We only see immages of the capital wich forms a facade to the world.

The above picture claimed to be taken in a remote area is actually how 90% of the country looks like. On GE with the Chinese border you can see a lot of pics chinese took from their highrise appartments in Dandong. Those aren't pretty immages at all sadly enough an those picture a fairly large city... I guess you compare it with China 50 years ago. Cities that are half build in commieblocks and half in slums.

@Zaruka: Thanks for sharing your images from the countryside...

@Korsakov: I never knew that PC/netbook/laptop production right there are un-licensed, though that industry has so much potential as NK slowly climbs the value chain of production.

Such exports of tech gadgets made S. Korea, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan rich...
