Will be when they open and try to match the high cost of operating a W Hotel versus the lousy ADR's they will achieve, the smart savvy Dubai investors who own 80% of this hotel project have been trying to sell for nearly a year so far offers have been well below their costs, if anyone is looking for a distressed hotel asset this will be it very soon

Which is why Bangkok is the most popular destination in Asia and the airport the third busiest in the world, but despite this still oversupply of Hotel rooms particularly in the 5 star sector and even more on the way !

Well I truly hope the rates at W will be "low" or "lower", AND mere SPG category "4". I'll be using it instead of the awful, over-priced St.Regis when I visit the Ritz project, which is just a stone's throw away!

just a re-post....

old heritage mansion is part of history of Thailand and nicely compliments the modern glass skyscrapers

History of the old mansion:

1914 - The mansion was built by "Viscount/Lord" Sathorn ("Luang" Jitjamnongwanich) as his residence

1927 - The mansion became the 'Hotel Royal' until around World War II

1948-99 - after WW II, mansion leased as the Soviet, then Russian Embassy

2005 - heritage site included in Sathorn Sq project (Fine Arts Dept of Thailand involved in restoration)

Unfortunately, St.Regis was "upgraded" to Category 6 - when it should rather be downgraded to 4 !!!

I doubt W will get "3" (more like 4) - I would, however, be very happy if it does!

I think St Regis Bangkok should be a "5" (the very nice ones in Mexico City and Beijing are "5"s), but OK, St Regis Singapore is a "6"

in category "3", Plaza Athénée and Le Méridien are very nice...I was expecting W Hotel Bangkok to be on par with them....but if its a "4" that is OK....(on par with Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit)

You are right, St.Regis "should" be at least a 5 (6 for the more luxurious ones). However, the St.Regis BKK does NOT live up to the St.Regis reputation and standards (in my humble opinion). I stayed there 3 times (as a SPG Platinum member) and was very disappointed with all 3 stays.

Plaza Athénée deserves "3" and no more. The rooms are tired and very out-dated. The corner suite I got was spacious but the decor was oh so 80s-Chinese-gaudy-ish feel. On the other hand, Le Méridien BKK is actually very nice, it is just in the WRONG location

IMHO The Category is more about the rack rates. Bangkok market is very high competition. Only few hotels can ask for higher rate (200$ or more). The average roomrate for bangkok 5-star is $150-$200 Cat4, St. Regis Bagkok is above $200 (Cat5). Samui is different market.

they now fly the Thailand and Belgium flags on the ground in front of Sathorn Square (I imagine because the Belgium Embassy is on the 16th floor?)
